{"id":282845,"date":"2023-01-05T10:38:20","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T16:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=282845"},"modified":"2023-01-05T11:58:41","modified_gmt":"2023-01-05T17:58:41","slug":"population-bomb-myth-author-promoted","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-bomb-myth-author-promoted\/","title":{"rendered":"Discredited &#8216;Population Bomb&#8217; author predicts overpopulation doom despite evidence to the contrary"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In his 1968 book, \u201cThe Population Bomb,\u201d Dr. Paul Ehrlich made a number of doomsday predictions, but\u00a0has a poor batting average at population-related prognostication.\u00a0Despite this, that hasn\u2019t stopped him from continuing to proclaim that the sky will soon fall \u2014\u00a0and it apparently hasn\u2019t stopped some people from taking him seriously. 60 Minutes, for example, recently showcased him as an \u201cexpert\u201d on the alleged threat of \u201cmass extinction\u201d due to overpopulation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The rate of extinction is extraordinarily high now and getting higher all the time,&#8221; Ehrlich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/60-minutes-uses-failed-doomsday-biologist-predict-mass-extinction-humanity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told 60 Minutes<\/a>. &#8220;Humanity is not sustainable. To maintain our lifestyle for the entire planet, you&#8217;d need five more Earths. Will you join us in this life-saving work as a monthly donor today?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6TqhcZsxrPA\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/06\/01\/us\/the-unrealized-horrors-of-population-explosion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>, Ehrlich once \u201cforecast[ed] that hundreds of millions would starve to death in the 1970s, that 65 million of them would be Americans, that crowded India was essentially doomed, that odds were fair \u2018England will not exist in the year 2000.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the April 1970 issue of Mademoiselle, Ehrlich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/carpe-diem\/18-spectacularly-wrong-predictions-made-around-the-time-of-the-first-earth-day-in-1970-expect-more-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cPopulation will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make \u2026 The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.\u201d And in the 1970 Earth Day issue of The Progressive, Ehrlich <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/carpe-diem\/18-spectacularly-wrong-predictions-made-around-the-time-of-the-first-earth-day-in-1970-expect-more-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">predicted<\/a> that, between 1980 and 1989, four billion people would perish in what he called the \u201cGreat Die-Off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Given Ehrlich&#8217;s not-so-stellar record, consulting actual experts seems advisable.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/demographers-warn-of-impending-population-collapse_4512821.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing body<\/a>\u00a0of demographers is suggesting that if a global catastrophe is, in fact, impending, it is due to declining fertility rates and a shrinking human population \u2014 not a growing one.<\/p>\n<p>The global fertility rate is currently 2.4 children per woman of childbearing age. This is slightly above the 2.1 birth rate which is necessary to replace the current population. Many nations and regions, however, currently have fertility rates well below replacement level, including the United States (1.6), Japan (1.3), Russia (1.6), and Europe (1.5). In these areas, the general population is <a href=\"https:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/features\/how-low-can-americas-birth-rate-go-before-its-a-problem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing older and shrinking<\/a> \u2013 eventually, the elderly will outnumber the young people whose labor is needed to support them. This situation is likely unsustainable.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford University economist Charles I. Jones has <a href=\"https:\/\/web.stanford.edu\/~chadj\/emptyplanet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> that the declining birth rate will lead to stagnating incomes and a decline in prosperity, culture, and innovation. \u201cWhen population growth is negative,\u201d he says, \u201c&#8230; growth models produce what we call the Empty Planet result: knowledge and living standards stagnate for a population that gradually vanishes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations is now <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/world-population-8-billion-growth-plummeting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">predicting<\/a> that the human population will peak in less than 60 years. Far from needing \u201cfive more Earths\u201d to sustain a rapidly-multiplying humanity, if low fertility rates continue unabated, and population growth becomes negative, the single Earth we have may eventually grow empty.<\/p>\n<p>Ehrlich is the great False Prophet of the Eco-pocalypse. Not a single one of his predictions has come to pass, even though Earth\u2019s population has more than doubled since \u201cThe Population Bomb\u201d was published.
