{"id":282821,"date":"2023-01-07T15:39:18","date_gmt":"2023-01-07T21:39:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=282821"},"modified":"2023-01-06T16:28:42","modified_gmt":"2023-01-06T22:28:42","slug":"byu-professor-pregnant-doesnt-know","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/byu-professor-pregnant-doesnt-know\/","title":{"rendered":"BYU professor appears to question whether someone can be pregnant if she doesn&#8217;t know it yet"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A professor at Brigham Young University (BYU) is facing criticism for seemingly promoting abortion to students during a women&#8217;s health class.\u00a0According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.campusreform.org\/article?id=20946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Campus Reform<\/a>, Stephanie Lutz used her &#8220;HLTH 450: Women\u2019s Health&#8221; class to explore the concept of &#8220;interspace&#8221; in pregnancy \u2014\u00a0questioning whether a woman is <em>really pregnant<\/em> if she doesn&#8217;t <em>know<\/em> she&#8217;s pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she had unprotected intercourse before she takes a positive pregnancy test, there&#8217;s a pill she can take to just ensure \u2014 like in this interspace, like I don\u2019t want to take a pregnancy test and I kind of don&#8217;t want to know if I actually conceived. This pill will just take care of it if I did, and if I didn&#8217;t&#8230;\u201d she said, adding, &#8220;[I]t feels like a dichotomous situation, like if you are pregnant, or you aren\u2019t pregnant. Black and white, yes or no?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The controversial statements were also covered by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.byucougarchronicle.org\/post\/byu-professor-i-don-t-know-the-morals-here-when-speaking-on-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cougar Chronicle<\/a>, a conservative newspaper covering BYU news.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/general-donation\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=monthly&amp;utm_content=article\"><b><i>For every dollar given, 34 more people can be reached with the truth about abortion. After Lutz&#8217; remarks began spreading across the internet, another BYU professor chimed in on Twitter \u2014 arguing that he believes white men have no right to discuss the topic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, as another white male with no sense for what it\u2019s like to be a woman, or pregnant, or to have white men\u2019s hands all over your body figuratively and physically, you sure have a lot to say on the subject,\u201d BYU Professor Mikle South wrote, before deleting his tweet.<\/p>\n<p>After this, South followed up by arguing that the topic made for good education.\u00a0&#8220;While my Tweet was meant for the man who retweeted this with lots more to say, I maintain that it is GOOD teaching for that BYU professor to grapple with hard topics and some vulnerability with their students,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It makes for good education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our reporter who covered this is a woman, so\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MikleSouth?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MikleSouth<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5saOe0euiY\">pic.twitter.com\/5saOe0euiY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The Cougar Chronicle (@TheCougChron) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheCougChron\/status\/1605552265246302209?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 21, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Of course, Lutz&#8217; remarks are not based in any kind of science; a woman is either pregnant, or she is not.<\/p>\n<p>Pregnancy is, scientifically, an objective and biological state of being. Even if someone doesn&#8217;t know she is pregnant, she is still pregnant. If someone doesn&#8217;t know they have cancer, they still have cancer. Someone&#8217;s <em>knowledge<\/em> of the situation is irrelevant. And, according to some, Lutz&#8217; theory violates the morals BYU is supposed to stand for, according to Jacob Christensen, who writes for the Cougar Chronicle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no interspace, there is no ambiguity, there is no misunderstanding: abortion is a moral sin,\u201d he told Campus Reform. \u201cBrigham Young University is a religious [Latter Day Saints] institution founded on the gospel of Jesus Christ; standards, morals, values, and beliefs are necessary to be upheld in such a setting. Professor Lutz\u2019s comments are not only wrong, but they are directly contrary to the doctrine of Jesus Christ taught at the university.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pledge.liveaction.org\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=prolife_pledge\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-277267\"
