But a new lawsuit is seeking to have that rule overturned.<\/p>\n<p>Stephanie Carter is an Army veteran, and a nurse practitioner at the Olin E. Teague Veterans\u2019 Center in Temple, Texas. On Tuesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/health-law-and-business\/texas-veterans-affairs-nurse-sues-to-stop-abortion-services-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news broke<\/a> that she is suing the Department of Veterans Affairs over the abortion mandate, arguing that it violates her beliefs. The current rule <em>does not allow for religious exemptions<\/em>, according to Carter, who said her supervisor refused her request to opt out of handling and distributing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\/abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion pills<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are suing the Department of Veterans Affairs for violating our client\u2019s religious convictions. Will you join us in this life-saving work as a monthly donor today?<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit was filed on Carter&#8217;s behalf by the First Liberty Institute. \u201cIt is unconscionable that the Biden administration would force health care workers at VA facilities to violate their consciences,\u201d Danielle Runyan, senior counsel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/12\/14\/va-employee-sues-department-over-new-abortion-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the Military Times<\/a>. \u201cThe VA should be focused on caring for the men and women who bravely served to protect our country, not on performing illegal abortions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Terrence Hayes, a spokesperson for the VA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2022\/12\/14\/va-abortion-policy-faces-congressional-legal-challenges.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Military.com<\/a> that they remain committed to keeping abortion available. &#8220;That is our commitment to women veterans as they deserve nothing less than access to world-class reproductive care when they need it most,&#8221; he said. &#8220;That&#8217;s what our nation owes them, and that&#8217;s what we at VA will deliver.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Sen. Tommy Tuberville, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/senator-threatens-block-defense-confirmations-abortions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">threatening action<\/a> over a VA policy funding travel for employee abortions.
