The New Republic published an <\/span>article<\/span><\/a> on December 13 titled, \u201cThe Anti-Abortion Movement Is More Conspiracy-Addled Than Ever\u201d which asserts that the pro-life movement, and Live Action founder and president Lila Rose in particular, are anti-semitic. It is little more than a hit piece\u2026\u00a0 with a lot of pseudo-academic window-dressing.<\/span><\/p>\n

You Can\u2019t Have it Both Ways<\/b><\/p>\n

The author, Audrey Clare Farley, begins by asserting that \u201c[t]he \u2018pro-life\u2019 movement has gone full groomer,\u201d citing the fact that Lila Rose and other pro-life leaders have recently decried the sexualization of children on Twitter and elsewhere. However, the author claims concurrently that these efforts 1) are \u201cdisingenuous\u201d because they don\u2019t go far enough, and 2) are dangerous in and of themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the one hand, she claims that Lila Rose in particular is “apathetic” about children being sexualized because she has not denounced \u201cpurity culture\u201d \u2013 drawing a <\/span>false equivalence<\/span><\/a> between that particular movement, which Farley believes hypersexualizes children, and Balenciaga\u2019s ads featuring children and bondage wear. She further alleges apathy toward child sex abuse on Rose\u2019s part because, to Farley\u2019s apparent knowledge, Rose didn\u2019t denounce clerical sex abuse scandals, something Rose actually <\/span>has<\/span><\/i><\/a> done<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>repeatedly<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand, Farley claims that, so long as Lila Rose and others within the pro-life movement continue to speak out about the sexual grooming of children, \u201cJewish lives will be among those that are increasingly endangered\u201d \u2013 a nonsensical claim she never bothers to explain.<\/span><\/p>\n

So which is it? One cannot simultaneously go too far <\/span>and<\/span><\/i> not far enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conflating Religion and Abortion<\/b><\/p>\n

Farley criticizes Rose for \u201crefer[ring] to abortion as a \u2018satanic ritual[.]\u2019\u201d However, it is actually <\/span>the Satanic Temple\u2019s leaders themselves<\/span><\/a> who have decided that abortion is one of their religious rituals \u2013 the Temple has <\/span>repeatedly<\/span><\/a> sued<\/span><\/a> against pro-life laws on so-called religious grounds, and has even <\/span>demanded<\/span><\/a> that the FDA supply it with abortion pills directly for \u201csacramental\u201d use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Farley also quotes Catholic scholar David W. Lafferty as saying: \u201cIt is now fairly common to hear pro-lifers talk about abortion as a religious rite.\u201d No citations to any pro-lifers actually using this kind of language are given. In reality, it seems to be abortion apologists who are making abortion about \u201creligious\u201d ritual. Rabbi Danya Ruttenberg, whom Farley also quotes, has <\/span>called<\/span><\/a> what abortion groups do \u201choly work.\u201d And interestingly enough, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (who claims to be a devout Catholic while holding pro-abortion views) has also referred to the abortion issue as \u201c<\/span>sacred ground<\/span><\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Double Standards<\/b><\/p>\n

Farley condemns Rose because some Twitter users have made repugnant anti-semitic comments in replies to Rose\u2019s tweets. But if Twitter users were to make pro-life comments on Farley\u2019s tweets, should she then be deemed to hold pro-life views? Should she be expected to condemn each and every one of these comments personally \u2013 even if thousands or tens of thousands of replies were made to a single tweet?<\/span><\/p>\n

Farley also <\/span>cites<\/span><\/a> a few of Rose\u2019s past <\/span>tweets<\/span><\/a> that <\/span>highlight<\/span><\/a> the Nazi Holocaust as a legitimate and unforgivable atrocity \u2013 enumerating its death toll, and calling it a \u201cdevastating injustice,\u201d for example \u2013 in a preposterous and strange attempt to claim that Rose \u201csubordinate[s] [Jewish] suffering under the Third Reich to abortion.\u201d Acknowledging the devastation of other human atrocities (like abortion) does not mean one is denigrating the magnitude of the Holocaust\u2019s devastation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, Farley claims that \u201c[a]ntisemitism \u2026 has always been a part of the anti-abortion movement.\u201d To support this claim, she cites fringe personalities (like <\/span>Michael A Hoffman<\/span><\/a>, a notorious anti-semite who claimed abortion was a Jewish \u201cfamily value\u201d) and fringe ideas (such as the idea that the Jewish people were somehow responsible for <\/span>Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i>)<\/span> \u2013 but these personalities and ideas have never been embraced by the mainstream pro-life movement, and certainly not by Lila Rose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But what about the well-established and highly-publicized racist and anti-semitic histories of others within the <\/span>pro-abortion<\/span><\/i> movement? If Rose is to be attacked and held responsible for the actions and statements of fringe members of the pro-life movement, shouldn\u2019t the actions of the largest \u2013 and certainly most mainstream \u2013 abortion corporation be held against the pro-abortion movement and its apologists, including Farley?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Planned Parenthood has perhaps one of the worst records of <\/span>racism<\/span><\/a> of any modern corporation. The corporation was even recently <\/span>sued<\/span><\/a> for anti-semitic discrimination by a former employee, who alleges that George Walker, Planned Parenthood\u2019s VP of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, called Orthodox Jewish women \u201cbirthing factories.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But does Farley accuse the pro-abortion movement of anti-semitism as a result of Planned Parenthood\u2019s actions? Does she condemn that organization as racist due to the statements and actions of <\/span>Margaret Sanger<\/span><\/a>, its founder? Hardly. She doesn\u2019t even mention it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Farley is projecting, gaslighting her readers, and accusing Lila Rose and the pro-life movement of that which pro-abortion apologists are actually guilty. Her article is an attack piece \u2013 and little else. It may be dolled up with a lot of \u201cscholarly\u201d commentary, but the invective modus operandi shines through with crystal clarity. Taking its <\/span>ad hominem<\/span><\/a> claims seriously would be a serious mistake.<\/span><\/p>\n
