Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Supreme Court decision overturned <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, returning abortion law determinations to the individual states, several states have restricted abortion \u2014 and many doctors have used those laws to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-denial-medical-neglect\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">justify<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> neglecting to provide basic case to pregnant women experiencing complications. However, in each of the recent cases trumpeted by the media, the standard treatment would <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been an abortion and was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prohibited by the pro-life laws currently in-place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In light of this situation, the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) has released new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/issuesinlawandmedicine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/WRIGHT.pdf?fbclid=IwAR0t0VeVxO8Fstu2TGIT_BNGZuK5XTwuXWKo46Lclwh6hE_1JoHTTb7EG-g\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guidance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> written by Dr. Jeffrey Wright, FACOG, which clearly delineates what does <em>not<\/em> qualify as an abortion. The article, aptly titled, \u201cWhat is NOT an Abortion?\u201d was published in Issues in Law and Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>URGENT:\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/future-of-abortion\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=minibomb\"><b><i>For every dollar given, 34 more people can be reached with the truth about abortion. Will you join us in this life-saving work as a monthly donor today?<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Wright explains that much of the confusion regarding what is or is not allowed under current pro-life laws stems from a difference in medical terminology compared to common usage. \u201c[T]he medical term \u2018abortion\u2019 refers to any pregnancy that ends prior to 20 weeks,\u201d Wright explains. \u201cOn the other hand, in our common language \u2026 we typically use the word \u2018abortion\u2019 to mean a procedure that was chosen in order to end a pregnancy that otherwise could have progressed to the delivery of a baby.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wright goes on to state that procedures used to treat ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages (when the preborn child has already died), and anembryonic pregnancies (when an embryo never develops), have not typically ever been considered to be abortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, although miscarriage or fetal death may sometimes result as a complication of medical treatments for some maternal health conditions, this is an unintended consequence, and again, is not considered an abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFetal death can sometimes occur as a complication of an intrauterine surgical procedure to treat a single fetus or to treat an abnormality such as twin to twin transfusion syndrome,\u201d Wright adds. \u201cAgain, those occurrences are not viewed as abortions.\u201d Intent matters \u2014\u00a0and the intent in such cases is to medically treat the human beings involved, not to kill them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Wright does not advocate intentionally ending the life of a preborn child, he does clarify that there are some conditions that can arise in pregnancy wherein the life-saving treatment of the mother can unintentionally result in the loss of the life of the preborn child, and that these situations <em>are not illegal<\/em> under pro-life laws. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He offers a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/issuesinlawandmedicine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/WRIGHT.pdf?fbclid=IwAR0t0VeVxO8Fstu2TGIT_BNGZuK5XTwuXWKo46Lclwh6hE_1JoHTTb7EG-g\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of conditions which might meet those criteria, while adding the following caveat: \u201cIt is important to understand that medical diagnosis, and furthermore prognosis, is imprecise. Estimations of level of risk to a mother\u2019s life or her bodily function vary between physicians. Patients and physicians have a range of views regarding how much risk is acceptable. Two physicians may see the same patient and arrive at different diagnoses and then recommend substantially different treatments.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no doubt that the inaccurate and sometimes hysterical comments in the media have many physicians and others in healthcare fearing that they will violate a criminal statute,\u201d Wright observes. However, he concludes, \u201cThese laws do not threaten physicians providing legitimate medical care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pledge.liveaction.org\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=prolife_pledge\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-277267\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/pledge-live-action-ad-970x250-700x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the Dobbs v.
