His mum and dad, Marie Clare and Angus, had lost a baby during pregnancy three years before so this pregnancy was considered high risk.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Clare\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-63705516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cWhen I went to hospital with sharp pains doctors told me I was in labour\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said \u2018no\u2019 and tried to hide the labour pains from them as I desperately didn\u2019t want him to arrive early\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Doctors] said there was a very slim chance of survival under 23 weeks. I looked at my watch and it was one minute to midnight and so I said in one minute I will have reached 23 weeks\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fprolifecampaignireland%2Fposts%2Fpfbid0CBmgwNXj6mk7yoKfKUub6SVVj4c9scW5MK43jXsY6LGQ7gtMMyKNeUUoKpFkDX8Vl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"729\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>The couple weren\u2019t allowed to see their son for almost two days<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hector was born a little over an hour later at 01.14am. Because he was so premature he had to be immediately resuscitated and placed in an incubator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw him when he was born and gave him a kiss and then he was wrapped in plastic to keep him warm and rushed to the resuscitation department\u201d, his mum said. \u201cI felt devastation at not being able to be with him\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>To make matters worse, COVID-19 restrictions meant that the couple were not allowed to see their son for almost two days after he was born. After that, his parents were only permitted to see him for brief stretches of time. Only after an agonising five days were Hector\u2019s parents allowed to be with him day and night.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Clare\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-63705516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cI was heartbroken that we couldn\u2019t be with him in those crucial early moments\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><b>URGENT:\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/future-of-abortion\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=minibomb\"><b><i>For every dollar given, 34 more people can be reached with the truth about abortion. Will you join us in this life-saving work as a monthly donor today?<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s been the best year of my life\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hector suffers from a number of serious conditions including hydrocephalus, which prevents the proper flow of spinal fluid, caused by a bleed on his brain. He also has chronic lung disease, retinopathy and a feeding tube.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until 42 days after he was born that doctors took him off the ventilator and said he would live.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Clare\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-63705516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told BBC Scotland<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWhen I heard, I let out a wail that came from the bottom of my soul, I can\u2019t articulate it, it was the greatest feeling in the world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was still a long way to go but to know the team thought he was going to survive was so great\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In April this year, five months after he was born, he was allowed to go home. He\u2019s still in need of care, though, and has had 15 operations and been rushed to A&amp;E 25 times.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, though, Hector celebrated his first birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Clare said \u201cHe was born at 01:14 so we stood at his cot at that exact time one year later and had a quiet moment just so grateful he is here\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reflected on how he had made it and how we were the luckiest people\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been the best year of my life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>About\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-63705516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">4,000 babies<\/a>\u00a0are born prematurely in Scotland every year.<\/p>\n<p>Outcomes for premature babies are improving all the time. Earlier this year, John Wyatt, Professor of Ethics and Perinatology at University College London and also Emeritus Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics, Ethics &amp; Perinatology at University College London,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/parliamentarians-hear-from-expert-about-why-abortion-time-limits-should-be-lowered-in-line-with-the-latest-scientific-evidence\">presented evidence<\/a>\u00a0to parliamentarians from the UK and across the world \u201cthat there has been a steady improvement in the chances of survival of babies born at 22 and 23 weeks gestation since the Abortion Act was last amended [in 1990]\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson Catherine Robinson said \u201cPremature babies are a persistent challenge to supporters of abortion because the humanity of each of these babies is on clear display.
