This has seen doctor-assisted self-deletion\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/medical-assistance-dying\/annual-report-2021.html#a3.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">grow from 2.5% of all Canadian deaths in 2020 to 3.3% in 2021<\/a>: in 2021 euthanasia accounted for almost 5% of all deaths in Quebec and British Columbia. But apparently it needs promotion, too: the video feels like an advert for this way of ending your life. It\u2019s styled in heavily boho-consumerist terms, compiling the kind of footage \u2014 oceans, bubble-blowing, convivial mealtimes, glowing lanterns \u2014 you\u2019d expect in a bourgeois holiday let ad. These, though, are combined with audio voiceover from interviews with Jennyfer herself (who was a real person) in which she talks about seeing beauty in everything even as she plans to end her own life.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Of course the actions of<em>\u00a0Simons<\/em>\u00a0(as it is customarily called) are not taken in isolation. Zachary Rogers tells us, \u201cA document for doctors that was produced earlier this month by the Canadian Association of MAID Assessors and Providers came to our attention. It suggests if the patient qualifies, doctors must bring up the subject of euthanasia prior to their patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>URGENT:\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/future-of-abortion\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=minibomb\"><b><i>For every dollar given, 34 more people can be reached with the truth about abortion. Will you join us in this life-saving work as a monthly donor today?<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Canadian religious leaders expressed \u201cgrowing concern over the looming activation of new policies that would allow those suffering from mental illness to be euthanized with considerable speed \u2014 just 90 days after two doctors approve a request for assisted suicide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company also pulled \u201can accompanying video in which former CEO Peter Simons explained and defended its contents,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aleteia.org\/2022\/12\/02\/outrageous-fashion-ad-supporting-euthanasia-pulled-no-comment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JP Mauro wrote<\/a>. According to the\u00a0<em>Christian Post<\/em>, Peter Simons commented:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>\u201cWe wanted to do something that really underlined human connection, and perhaps would help people reconnect to each other, and to this hope and optimism that is going to be needed if we\u2019re going to build the sort of communities and spaces that we want to live in and that are enjoyable to live in.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuman connection\u201d? I think not. Harrington ended her brilliant post by observing:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>So this is another company garnering clicks and liberal cachet from taking a stand in favour of \u2018freedom\u2019, even the freedom to end your own life. No wonder, then, that the taboo-smashing ratchet goes on, aestheticising all-out war on the prohibitions that uphold our humanist settlement, even when the only ones left are child sexual abuse and choosing to end your own life. It\u2019s at least a century too late, though, to wonder how many of the other taboos whose smoking rubble we now call \u2018culture\u2019 were also standing between us and profound
