One of those was Nate, a 10-year-old from Waterbury, Connecticut, who celebrated his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcconnecticut.com\/news\/local\/i-couldnt-wait-for-this-day-10-year-old-overcomes-health-challenges-gets-adopted-by-former-teachers\/2919368\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adoption<\/a> by two of his former teachers.<\/p>\n<p>Nate&#8217;s mom, Jenna Riccio, taught him reading when he was a first grader. The following year when she learned he was in DCF care due to a number of health challenges, she stepped in to become his foster mom.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcconnecticut.com\/news\/local\/i-couldnt-wait-for-this-day-10-year-old-overcomes-health-challenges-gets-adopted-by-former-teachers\/2919368\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC Connecticut<\/a> describes, Nate had to undergo a lot due to illness with sickle cell disease, including multiple hospital stays and the amputation of his legs and an arm. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctinsider.com\/news\/article\/National-Adoption-Day-Waterbury-teachers-17594541.php#photo-23183701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CT Insider<\/a>, Nate had to undergo more than 120 medical appointments while he was in Jenna&#8217;s care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was kind of hard. Will you join us in this life-saving work as a monthly donor today?<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FLGSusanB%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02FXHEnsJtRvzz3u8orj2ebGSYi4yeb3GrvhK8dyjeHTWK3qZKxqQYeQg1NDtTod1Tl&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"828\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>During the adoption ceremony, Nate&#8217;s DCF caseworker,\u00a0Jackie Vidal, praised his extremely positive attitude despite his setbacks.\u00a0\u201cYou never complained, you never asked for help,\u201d she said, while adding that she thinks she is now a better person after seeing the way Nate handled his challenges.<\/p>\n<p>While Nate was in foster care, Jenna married Tim Riccio, Nate&#8217;s former art teacher, and the three became a family.\u00a0\u201cHe taught me how to be a mom,\u201d Jenna said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe&#8217;s the toughest kid in the entire world,\u201d Tim said. \u201cHe&#8217;s gone through more in his ten years than most people I know have gone through in their entire life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The family also spoke of the beautiful bond Nate has with Jenna and Tim&#8217;s baby, Julian.\u00a0\u201cNate is Julian\u2019s favorite person, hands down,\u201d Jenna said. \u201cShe lights up every time he&#8217;s around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nate was all smiles after the adoption ceremony Friday, at which Jenna and Tim officially became his parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was so amazing! I couldn&#8217;t believe this was happening right now,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel so happy!\u201d he added. \u201cAnd I couldn&#8217;t wait for this day.
