She weighed just over a kilogram but her tumour was almost twice that weight.<\/p>\n<p>At her mother\u2019s 20-week scan, the tumour was discovered and her parents were told that their daughter had a 25-40% chance of survival.<\/p>\n<p>Baby Saylor was born three months early, and just minutes later, a team of 25 doctors and nurses began an operation to remove the sacrococcygeal teratoma from her tailbone. The tumour extended into her pelvis and abdomen\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of these babies do not survive the pregnancy \u2026 These tumours function like a large vascular shunt causing a lot of blood to return to the heart. In some babies \u2026 heart failure occurs\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother Rachel described Saylor as a \u201cstrong-willed little fighter\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XsTdN0RRz9U\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the social worker and surgeons first gathered to tell us she had little chance of making it due to prematurity and the tumour, I cried hysterically\u201d, Rachel\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/lifestyle\/parenting\/babies\/mater-hospital-celebrates-miracle-baby-saylor-thomson-born-with-huge-tumour\/news-story\/f17c8da7875e4d94f31e3269e5601137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel was finally able to hold her daughter after ten days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut being able to hold Saylor in my arms and know she has come through the other side is something special\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Saylor, the \u201cmiracle baby\u201d, is now going from \u201cstrength to strength\u201d and is almost three times her birth weight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Prospects for premature babies are improving<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Outcomes for premature babies are improving all the time. Earlier this year, John Wyatt, Professor of Ethics and Perinatology at University College London and also Emeritus Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics, Ethics &amp; Perinatology at University College London,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/parliamentarians-hear-from-expert-about-why-abortion-time-limits-should-be-lowered-in-line-with-the-latest-scientific-evidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presented evidence<\/a>\u00a0to parliamentarians from the UK and across the world \u201cthat there has been a steady improvement in the chances of survival of babies born at 22 and 23 weeks gestation since the Abortion Act was last amended [in 1990]\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson Catherine Robinson said, \u201cIn the UK, if a child were discovered to have such a disability, he or she could be aborted up the point of birth. Stories like Saylor\u2019s show that there is always hope though, and that whether or not a baby has a disability, they are still a baby, they are still human, and deserve our love and protection, not abortion\u201d<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we celebrate these \u2018little miracles\u2019 on World Prematurity Day, the glaring inconsistency between the care that premature babies receive and the fact that babies at similar gestational ages can be aborted is clear for all to see. These little fighters are capable of overcoming the odds if they are given a chance.
