As Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/experts-falling-birth-rate-looming-threat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> documented, the impending global disaster may actually be declining fertility rates and a\u00a0<i>shrinking<\/i>\u00a0human population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe world is about to pass a major milestone, as the human population hits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2022\/11\/04\/world-population-to-hit-8-billion-in-the-coming-days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8 billion<\/a> for the first time. It is projected to reach a peak of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s and to remain at that level until 2100,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/desa\/world-population-reach-8-billion-15-november-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UN.org reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe global population is projected to reach 8 billion on 15 November 2022, and India is projected to surpass China as the world\u2019s most populous country in 2023,&#8221; the UN added, while claiming that &#8220;fertility has fallen markedly in recent decades for many countries. Today, two-thirds of the global population lives in a country or area where lifetime fertility is below 2.1 births per woman, roughly the level required for zero growth in the long run for a population with low mortality.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The number is less than previously predicted<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2020, the BBC analyzed a Lancet study on population predictions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-53409521\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">writing<\/a>, &#8220;As a result, the researchers expect the number of people on the planet to peak at 9.7 billion around 2064, before falling down to 8.8 billion by the end of the century.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPrevious versions of the UN World Population Prospects showed a significant slowdown in population growth, with very slow growth \u2013 almost reaching a plateau \u2013 by the end of the century. In its previous release, it projected that the world population would be around 10.88 billion in 2100, and would not yet have peaked. In this new release, the UN projects that the global population will peak before the end of the century \u2013 in 2086 at just over 10.4 billion people,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/world-population-update-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Our world in Data<\/a> wrote\u00a0in July 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Population growth fears<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Paul Ehrlich&#8217;s 1968 book \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/innovation\/book-incited-worldwide-fear-overpopulation-180967499\/\">The Population Bomb<\/a>\u201c\u00a0predicted that by the 1970s, the world would &#8220;undergo famines&#8221; and &#8220;hundreds of millions of people [would] starve to death.\u201d Ehrlich also falsely\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.discoverthenetworks.org\/individualProfile.asp?indid=2194\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">predicted<\/a>\u00a0that by the 1980s, most of the world\u2019s key natural resources would be depleted, that 65 million Americans would die of starvation between 1980-89, and that by 1999 \u201cthe population of the U.S. [would]\u00a0shrink from 250 million to about 22.5 million \u2026 because of famine and global warming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Population Council<\/a> president Bernard Berelson penned a frightening proposal in February of 1969, entitled &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/1964767\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beyond Family Planning<\/a>&#8221; published by the Council\u2019s journal, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.popcouncil.org\/research\/studies-in-family-planning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studies in Family Planning<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0There he proposed the use of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/coercive-population-control-eugenics-alive-today\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coercive<\/a> measures should &#8220;voluntary means&#8221; of family planning be insufficient to reduce population growth.<\/p>\n<p>These included &#8220;mass use of fertility control agent[s]&#8221; in water supplies, a &#8220;license&#8221; to have children, &#8220;temporary&#8221; and &#8220;compulsory sterilizations,&#8221; &#8220;family planning and sex education&#8221; in the schools, incentivizing &#8220;contraceptive couples&#8221; or &#8220;couples not bearing children&#8221; with monetary payments, taxing births and withdrawing benefits for those who give birth, &#8220;direct manipulation of family structure,&#8221; and the decriminalization of abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The following month (March 1969), a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/606433755\/Jaffe-Memo-Frederick-S-Jaffe-Center-for-Family-Planning-Program-Development-1?secret_password=hApjXvlLFzGFKHhRKcS3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reply<\/a> to Berelson sent by\u00a0former Planned Parenthood VP Fredrick Jaffe also detailed coercive proposals to advance population control.\u00a0In\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/liveactionnews.org\/analysis\/understanding-the-jaffe-memo-planned-parenthoods-disturbing-proposition-of-population-control\/\">1968<\/a>, Jaffe\u00a0founded the Center for Family Planning Program Development where he drafted his response. Social stratification thus raises sharply the issue, &#8216;Who shall decide whose fertility &#8211; and for whose purposes?'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>United States data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Despite alarmist fears, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/visualized-the-worlds-population-at-8-billion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several<\/a> sources, the U.S. population has already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/world-population\/#top20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reached<\/a> over\u00a0335 million, and more recently the birth rate has ticked up slightly following years of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1033027\/fertility-rate-us-1800-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decline<\/a>. This increase followed a high number of pregnancy terminations reported in 2020, where tragically 1 in 5 pregnancies ended in abortion,\u00a0according to\u00a0Guttmacher.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The number of births in the United States rose 1% from 2020 to 2021, following a decline of 4% from 2019 to 2020,&#8221; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db442.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> in August. &#8220;The general fertility rate, which declined 4% from 2019 to 2020, also rose 1%, from 55.7 births per 1,000 females aged 15\u201344 in 2020 to 56.3 in 2021.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A National Bureau of Economic Research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w30569\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working paper,<\/a> co-authored by Northwestern University economist <a href=\"https:\/\/hschwandt.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hannes Schwandt,<\/a>\u00a0attempted to explain the change. According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.northwestern.edu\/stories\/2022\/10\/the-united-states-is-experiencing-a-pandemic-baby-bump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Northwestern Now,<\/a>\u00a0&#8220;Many of the women who had babies in 2021 were college-educated, and may have benefited from increased flexibility in their work schedules and more time working from home\u2026 Women who were not college educated and some other subgroups continued to see declining birth rates, in keeping with pre-pandemic trends. Schwandt said that thinking comprehensively about how people make the decision to have a baby \u2014 largely, an economic decision \u2014 could be a good idea for policymakers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/observer.com\/2022\/05\/the-u-s-s-low-birth-rate-means-the-nation-is-headed-for-a-demographic-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Observer.com<\/a> noted, the 2021 increase will <em>not<\/em> be enough to &#8220;turn the tide.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;For the nation\u2019s population to reproduce itself, the &#8216;total fertility rate&#8217; needs to be at least 2,100 births per 1,000 women, or just over two children for every woman, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2021 the rate was 1,663 births per 1,000 women, 1 percent more than the previous year, but still too few babies being born to keep the population stable, according to the CDC statistics,&#8221; the media outlet wrote.\u00a0&#8220;If the trend isn\u2019t halted, by 2035 the proportion of people over 65 will be greater than those under 18,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/library\/stories\/2018\/03\/graying-america.html\">according to a 2018 report from the US Census<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peak of human population<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wall Street Journal columnist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/news\/author\/josh-zumbrun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Josh Zumbrun<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-population-is-about-to-hit-8-billionand-some-argue-it-is-near-its-peak-11660252977\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> that the falling global birth rate could quickly usher in the &#8220;peak human population.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut as we cross eight billion people, it is worth considering that the world might never make it to 10 billion, or even nine billion, and that the world\u2019s major demographic problems won\u2019t stem from the growing masses but from shrinking countries, aging populations and dwindling workforces,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-population-is-about-to-hit-8-billionand-some-argue-it-is-near-its-peak-11660252977\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cWe aren\u2019t talking about meteor strikes, alien invasions or apocalyptic scenarios (though, of course, that could do it, too) but rather straightforward demographic projections that conclude that birthrates have been falling so rapidly around the world that we could potentially reach the peak of human population in less than a generation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Some people, however, don&#8217;t seem alarmed at all at the idea of eventual societal and economic collapse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">&#8220;For many futurists, the primary challenge posed by declining population growth is economic: When people live longer and have fewer babies, the population ages, leaving fewer working-age adults to support a country\u2019s swelling number of retirees,&#8221; writes\u00a0<a class=\"css-n8ff4n e1jsehar0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/by\/spencer-bokat-lindell\">Spencer Bokat-Lindell<\/a>\u00a0at the New York Times (NYTs).<\/p>\n<p>But, he added, &#8220;For some demographers, the prospect of population stagnation or decline isn\u2019t any more a cause for alarm than population growth was; it\u2019s simply a change that governments will need to manage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pledge.liveaction.org\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=prolife_pledge\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-277267\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/pledge-live-action-ad-970x250-700x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Global population has now reached eight billion people, a lower number than what has been predicted in past years, easing some alarmists&#8217; fears about overpopulation.
