At a White House press briefing on Monday, the Biden administration appeared to deny increased targeting of pro-lifers and political opponents, despite an increasing amount of evidence to the contrary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>official transcripts<\/span><\/a>, a reporter asked White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre to comment on remarks by former President Trump that the current administration is “locking up pro-life activists, persecuting their political opponents.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While not yet subject to imprisonment, <\/span>many pro-lifers<\/span><\/a> have been <\/span>arrested<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>charged<\/span><\/a> under a Clinton-era law that, according to <\/span>Fox News<\/span><\/a>, had been barely used in 2020 and 2021. Yet in 2022 alone, the <\/span>Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances<\/span><\/a> (or FACE) Act has been used to indict 26 people<\/em> so far.<\/span><\/p>\n

In October, the FBI <\/span>arrested<\/span><\/a> 11 pro-life activists in Tennessee, including <\/span>pro-life activist Paul Vaughn who was arrested<\/a> at gunpoint with assault weapons drawn at his home, in front of his wife and children. Four pro-life Americans, <\/span>including<\/span><\/a> 87-year-old Holocaust survivor Eva Edl \u2014 whose experience of Nazi atrocities led her to a lifelong commitment to fight for human rights \u2014\u00a0were <\/span>arrested and charged<\/span><\/a>\u00a0for participating in a \u201crescue\u201d at an abortion facility in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee. In September, the FBI <\/span>raided<\/span><\/a> the home of pro-life sidewalk counselor Mark Houck, a husband and father of seven children, for an <\/span>altercation<\/span><\/a> outside an abortion facility instigated by an abortion activist. In October, an atheist pro-lifer named Herb Geraghty of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was <\/span>arrested and indicted<\/span><\/a> on federal charges for participation in a Red Rose <\/span>rescue action<\/span><\/a> in Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/p>\n

In response to the reporter\u2019s question, the White House press secretary immediately denied the claim. \u201cClearly, that\u2019s not true,\u201d she insisted. \u201cIt\u2019s just not true. It\u2019s false. It’s a lie.\u201d In a follow up question, the reporter pointed out the perception among pro-lifers that they have been the <\/span>victims of attacks<\/span><\/a> with law enforcement looking the other way. \u201cThere\u2019s this perception though that pro-life activists are being persecuted and, in the meantime, like, pro-life pregnancy centers are being attacked\u2014\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At that point, Jean-Pierre cut the reporter off, and she continued to deny the question\u2019s premise. \u201cIt\u2019s not.\u00a0 It is just \u2014 that is just not something that I\u2019m going to comment from here about what the former President said.\u00a0 It is \u2014 you know, I\u2019m just not going to get anything further,\u201d Jean-Pierre said.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the reporter alluded to, attacks against pro-life houses of worship and pregnancy centers, which the FACE law was also designed to protect, have skyrocketed in 2022. A recent <\/span>report studying these attacks<\/span><\/a> has concluded that they are enabled by a \u201cpermissive atmosphere\u201d \u2013 marked by the absence of condemnation by many local and national officials, as well as the <\/span>failure of law enforcement to investigate<\/span><\/a> these crimes \u2013 while warning pro-life institutions to expect attacks to continue for the foreseeable future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In October, Republican lawmakers <\/span>sent a letter<\/span><\/a> to the FBI requesting further information about the FACE Act arrests, contending that \u201coverzealous prosecutions under the FACE Act weaponize the power of federal law enforcement against American citizens,\u201d targeting specifically \u201c pro-life Americans based solely on their beliefs.\u201d The lawmakers\u2019 letter also pointed out that \u201cthere have been no reports of FBI investigations or DOJ prosecutions in relation to the more than 72 pregnancy resource centers and 80 Catholic churches that have been attacked or vandalized since the Dobbs leak \u2013 heinous, violent, and organized crimes across state lines that are also subject to prosecution under the FACE Act.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Live Action has initiated a <\/span>petition<\/span><\/a> urging American citizens to demand \u201cthe FBI investigate and prosecute those behind the terrible violence against crisis pregnancy centers,\u201d as well as “halt their unconstitutional raids of peaceful pro-life protestors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
