She found herself becoming out of breath and dizzy. She then experienced stomach pains and black stool, indicating internal bleeding. Doctors determined that her hemoglobin levels were extremely low. They gave her two blood transfusions and some iron tablets, but her health problems continued. She was diagnosed with cancer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0after an endoscopy (a tiny camera placed down the patient\u2019s throat) and a biopsy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilbert was diagnosed with gastrointestinal stromal tumors, a form of cancer in the digestive tract. It is extremely rare, especially in young people, and has no cure.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilbert recalled lying in bed thinking, \u201cI\u2019m never going to see another Christmas.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being diagnosed with incurable cancer when you\u2019re only 15 was really hard and nights were the worst. I was terrified I\u2019d never wake up. On treatment, I had a lot of vomiting and was really weak. I couldn\u2019t believe I\u2019d gone from super-fit gymnast to terminal patient in just six months.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilbert doesn\u2019t say whether she or her family considered assisted suicide, but many patients faced with a similar diagnosis unfortunately do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>URGENT:\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/future-of-abortion\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=minibomb\"><b><i>For every dollar given, 34 more people can be reached with the truth about abortion. The study was done in Belgium and found similar rates of assisted suicide or euthanasia among different types of cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Concerningly, euthanasia was imposed on 1 to 3.4% of patients who did <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> request it \u2013 meaning someone else made the decision for them to die. The study uses the euphemism \u201clife abbreviation\u201d to describe this. In about 25% of cases where patients did request assisted suicide or euthanasia, it was done due to the wishes of the family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This brings, of course, concerns about consent and coercion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilbert was given a new drug called Imanitab which prevented her tumors from growing. She still lives with symptoms of a chronic illness. Part of what inspires her to \u201clive [her] life as fully as possible\u201d was the death of her friend Stuart, a fellow cancer patient whom she met during treatment. He was only 15 when he died.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilbert said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He had such joy in his life and really taught me to grasp each moment of life, because none of us knew how long we had. The doctors could never give me a timeline. It was always \u2018maybe a couple of years.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Stuart died in 2003 aged just 15, I knew I had to live my life as fully as possible. Now, I have my own home and a partner and make greeting cards and do flower photography. Although I can\u2019t work full-time, I do as much as I can to keep busy.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gilbert now has a following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@thatgistcancergirl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on Tiktok<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where she posts videos about her ongoing struggle with cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her story shows that doctors can be wrong. The \u201cmaybe a couple of years\u201d her doctors said she would live has ended up being <em>more than 20<\/em>. Despite her illness, she enjoys life, and her videos inspire and encourage others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her story also shows that one can live a happy, productive life, even with a cancer diagnosis.
