A new bill introduced in the House of Representatives would install a federal bureaucrat to promote access to abortion, as well as to report suspected \u201cmisinformation\u201d that abortion activists could use to attack or undermine pro-life speech.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>HHS Reproductive and Sexual Health Ombuds Act of 2022<\/span><\/a> seeks to create a position within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for a public advocate or point of contact \u2013 an ombud \u2013 to promote abortion, disseminate information about abortion, and monitor so-called \u201cmisinformation\u201d about abortion. The bill is backed by abortion activist groups including NARAL, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, and the National Partnership for Women and Families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the proposed legislation, the ombud would not only \u201cprovide the public with evidence-based and medically accurate information related to medication abortions conducted outside formal medical settings,\u201d but also will \u201ccollect information regarding, and to address, reproductive and sexual health misinformation being disseminated to the public.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

If such information is found, it could flag an audit or investigation by the Department\u2019s Inspector General.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bill defines misinformation as practices that are \u201cnot evidence based\u201d or are medically \u201cinaccurate\u201d \u2014\u00a0a definition that could open the door to government attacks on pro-life arguments, most fundamentally that induced abortion is <\/span>not truly medically necessary<\/span><\/a>, can be\u00a0dangerous<\/a> to women,\u00a0<\/span>and involves the <\/span>intentional killing<\/span><\/a> of a preborn baby<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pro-abortion organizations and politicians \u2014 as well as abortion-friendly media \u2014 have a history of bias in favor of promoting abortion and enshrining the goal of promoting its \u201caccess\u201d over and above all potentially contradicting scientific information, like the <\/span>science<\/span><\/a> of <\/span>fetal development<\/span><\/a> proving the preborn baby\u2019s humanity. <\/span><\/p>\n

Consider the following: a recent\u00a0<\/span>article<\/span><\/a> in the Guardian<\/span> purported to show \u201cpregnancy tissue\u201d in order to make abortion more palatable, but failed to show an embryo, eventually even garnering <\/span>backlash<\/span><\/a> from abortion supporters<\/span>. Abortion giant Planned Parenthood purports to provide <\/span>adoption referrals<\/span><\/a>, but in reality, it<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>discourages options<\/span><\/a> other than abortion<\/span>. Abortion supporters frequently call <\/span>abortion pill reversal protocol<\/span><\/a> \u201cjunk science\u201d despite promising research<\/a> into the protocol and a lack of <\/span>adverse effects (after all, progesterone has been used to prevent miscarriage for decades)<\/span>. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) has even <\/span>changed its guidance<\/span><\/a> about ultrasounds and exams before first-trimester abortions<\/span> in order to stay in step with the abortion industry. The abortion pill has been framed as so \u201csafe\u201d and \u201cnecessary\u201d that some providers are prescribing the drugs \u201cjust in case\u201d \u2014 a move which prompted a <\/span>recent warning<\/span><\/a> against such prescriptions from the FDA<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet none of these examples have been labeled as “misinformation” by those in positions of power.<\/p>\n

The proposed legislation was introduced by Congresswoman Nikema Williams, a member of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus. Williams asserted that the bill is needed because women are confused. \u201cAs the assault on abortion rights continues, people are scared and confused as to what resources are available for them,\u201d the congresswoman said in a <\/span>press release<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The bill comes as efforts to utilize the federal government to promote abortion have accelerated since the overturning of <\/span>Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i> in June. Since issuing an <\/span>executive order<\/span><\/a> establishing an interagency task force to promote abortion, President Biden has directed federal agencies \u2013 like the <\/span>Department of Health and Human Services<\/span><\/a>, the <\/span>Department of Justice<\/span><\/a>, the <\/span>Department of Veterans Affairs<\/span><\/a>, and even the <\/span>Department of Defense<\/span><\/a> \u2013 to use all available means to expand access to abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n
