{"id":279070,"date":"2022-11-03T16:44:40","date_gmt":"2022-11-03T21:44:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=279070"},"modified":"2022-11-02T18:13:02","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T23:13:02","slug":"study-abort-first-pregnancies-4x-abortions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abort-first-pregnancies-4x-abortions\/","title":{"rendered":"Study: Women who abort their first pregnancies have 4x more abortions over their lifetimes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new peer-reviewed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/23333928221130942\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) has found that women whose first pregnancy ends in abortion are \u201clikely to have more pregnancies, more abortions, and more miscarriages than women whose first pregnancy ends in a live birth,\u201d according to a CLI <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/medicaid-data-decision-to-abort-first-pregnancy-carries-lifetime-risks-of-adverse-events\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study utilized 17 years of anonymized Medicaid claims data from the 17 states which use taxpayer funds to cover abortion through their Medicaid programs. Data from 5,453 continuously eligible Medicaid beneficiaries between 1999 and 2015 was analyzed; women who were age 16 in 1999 were organized into three groups based on the outcome of their first pregnancies: birth, natural loss, or abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>URGENT:\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/future-of-abortion\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=minibomb\"><b><i>For every dollar given, 34 more people can be reached with the truth about abortion. Will you join us in this life-saving work as a monthly donor today?<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study found that, compared to women whose first pregnancies resulted in a live birth, women whose first pregnancies ended in abortion had, on average:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">53% more miscarriages\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">35% more pregnancies over their reproductive lifetimes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than four times as many abortions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only half the number of live births<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. James Studnicki, CLI vice president of data analytics and lead author of the study, stated: \u201cAbortion proponents want Americans to believe that abortion empowers women. That optimistically misplaced narrative is simply not supported by the actual reproductive experiences of real women.\u201d He added:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increased likelihood of multiple abortions should be alarming to public health officials knowing that several other peer-reviewed studies have found women who experience multiple abortions are at greater risk of future <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/obgyn.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1471-0528.2009.02278.x\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy<\/span><\/i><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28815662\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complications<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/2050312118807624\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><\/i><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/2050312116665997\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disorders<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and even <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22954474\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">death<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means that a first pregnancy abortion puts women at increased risk for a cascade of lifetime adverse events.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tessa Longbons, CLI\u2019s senior research associate and a co-author of the study, said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A woman\u2019s first pregnancy shapes the course of her life. \u2026 While pro-abortion politicians <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/5-reasons-elizabeth-warren-pregnancy-centers-shut\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attack<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pro-life <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnancy-resource-centers-care-people-womb-tomb\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy centers<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the reality is that the compassionate counseling offered by these community-based organizations is exactly what a woman needs to preserve her long-term physical, mental, and reproductive health.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to CLI\u2019s press release, this study is \u201cthe first to utilize 17 years of anonymized Medicaid claims data to identify each woman\u2019s first pregnancy outcome \u2013 birth, abortion, or natural loss \u2013 and then trace the outcomes of every subsequent pregnancy.\u201d It adds, \u201cNo [other] published research to date has addressed the association of a first pregnancy outcome with each and every subsequent pregnancy outcome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a
