Joaquin Castro of Texas and Sara Jacobs of California sent a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/10\/21\/politics\/state-abortion-laws-human-rights-castro-jacobs\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> to Richard Visek, the State Department&#8217;s acting legal adviser, to review how pro-life laws in individual states \u201ccomply with international human rights and treaty obligations.&#8221; They also asked Visek to clarify the United States&#8217; commitment to protecting abortion internationally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn particular, we ask that the State Department confirm U.S. support for and understanding of international human rights protections for abortion to the relevant UN bodies, including and especially the UN Human Rights Committee,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n<p><b>URGENT:\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/future-of-abortion\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=minibomb\"><b><i>For every dollar given, 34 more people can be reached with the truth about abortion. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/em>, which overturned <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> and <em>Planned Parenthood v. Casey<\/em>,\u201d they continued, adding that they \u201cbelieve the <em>Dobbs<\/em> decision is not only harmful to individuals in the United States who seek safe, legal access to abortions, but it also impacts the U.S. commitment to international human rights and its legal obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to an anonymous congressional staffer, who spoke with CNN, the United States is bound to treaties which protect abortion access internationally, and the Biden administration may have further opportunities to review additional treaties soon. \u201cThe previous administration did disavow reproductive rights as human rights and this administration has clarified that the United States does uphold reproductive rights,\u201d the congressional staffer said. \u201cThere may be other opportunities during this administration, for the US to present its record and to be very clear about what the administration\u2019s commitments are and how it\u2019s seeking to uphold those commitments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations, for its part, has made it clear where it stands on abortion. It has previously called for U.S. pro-life laws to be <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/united-nations-attack-us-pro-life-laws\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revoked<\/a>, calling them &#8220;incompatible&#8221; with international law. The UN Human Rights Committee has also gone so far as to call on every single country to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/un-human-rights-countries-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legalize abortion<\/a>. Kate Gilmore, a deputy high commissioner for the UN, likewise <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/united-nations-abortion-bans-torture-extremist-hate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> pro-life laws &#8220;torture&#8221; and &#8220;extremist hate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet abortion is the intentional killing of human beings in utero \u2014 an actual violation of their human rights. As outlined by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/universal-declaration-human-rights\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Universal Declaration of Human Rights<\/a>, \u201cEveryone has the right to life, liberty and security of person,\u201d and \u201cNo one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it is abortion itself that deprives human beings of their most intrinsic right: the right to life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pledge.liveaction.org\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=prolife_pledge\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-277267 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/pledge-live-action-ad-970x250-700x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two pro-abortion legislators in Congress have asked the State Department to weigh in on pro-life laws and how they affect the international human rights protections as outlined by the United Nations.
