Russell movie <em>Amsterdam<\/em>. It\u2019s kind of long, but I found every minute of it enjoyable. The writing is crisp and funny, and you can\u2019t top the acting by Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, and a large ensemble cast \u2014 which includes small but key roles for Robert DeNiro, Mike Myers, Taylor Swift, Chris Rock, and Rami Malek. (The film isn\u2019t raunchy or unduly gory, though the violence did earn the film an R-rating.)<\/p>\n<p>Put briefly, it tells the story of a multiethnic, multireligious group of friends who met during World War I, confronting racial animus, class snobbery, and finally a fascist conspiracy. Which was real. The film very loosely bases itself on the \u201cBusiness Plot\u201d by some American industrialists to cynically weaponize disgruntled American veterans, overthrow Franklin Roosevelt, and establish a top-down regime in the U.S. modeled on that of Fascist Italy. A plot that actually happened.<\/p>\n<p>Yep, it was real. Google \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcadiapublishing.com\/Navigation\/Community\/Arcadia-and-THP-Blog\/September-2018\/Smedley-Butler-and-the-1930s-Plot-to-Overthrow-the\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Smedley Butler<\/a>\u201d for the details. (The film ends with newsreel footage of Gen. Will you join us in this life-saving work as a monthly donor today?<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GLs2xxM0e78\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Like a Preston Sturges Screwball Classic<\/h4>\n<p>The film has the light, slightly baffling feel of a classic 1930s screwball comedy, such as those by Preston Sturges (get hold of <em>Hail, Conquering Hero<\/em> or <em>Sullivan\u2019s Travels<\/em>). The plot is complex and puzzling at first, as is fitting to a mystery. The sets and costumes and accents really capture the feel of New York City in the 1930s, which means plenty of gorgeous Art Deco interiors, and snazzy costumes for the luminously beautiful Ms. Robbie to wear.<\/p>\n<p>The characters make friends, even fall in love, across the then-stark color line. The film conveys effortlessly the beauty of <em>universal human dignity<\/em>, a product of divine Revelation that has arisen nowhere else but in the Christian (and Christian-influenced) world. You see on display the old-fashioned decency that traditional liberals once practiced, which has since been shoved aside by fanatical Woke posturing.<\/p>\n<h4>The Committee of the Five<\/h4>\n<p>Here\u2019s what really jumped out at me, though. I am sure the fimmakers never meant anyone to see this, but you can\u2019t miss it if you know your history.<\/p>\n<p>Not to spoil the plot, but the villains of the story are rich industrialists and elitists who organize something called The Committee of the Five. This group intends to replace our creaky, imperfect democracy with a sleek, machine-tooled, top-down regime of hand-picked puppets in uniform, whose job it will be to keep the masses quiet. Their goal isn\u2019t just elitist but racist and eugenicist.<\/p>\n<p>And here\u2019s the kicker: The Committee runs <em>forced sterilization clinics<\/em> across the country, which almost claim the fertility of one of the major black characters. <em>Aha,<\/em> I thought while watching it, <em>another parallel with real-world history.<\/em> The film could have told us the real name of that organization they were showing on screen: the American Birth Control League. It could have told us the new name that organization took on afterwards: Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>Think I\u2019m stretching the facts? Think <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/American-Birth-Control-League\">Britannica<\/a> would? Or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/pill-eugenics-and-birth-control\/\">PBS<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h4>A Racist, Elitist, Misanthropic Cabal<\/h4>\n<p>Of course they underplayed it. But we <a href=\"https:\/\/stream.org\/one-of-margaret-sangers-pals-ran-a-concentration-camp\/\">actually described and documented<\/a> the movie\u2019s \u201cCommittee of the Five\u201d right here at <em>The Stream<\/em> \u2026 six years ago:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The board of Margaret Sanger\u2019s organization and others where she served as an officer, the authors she published in <em>The Birth Control Review<\/em>, the conferences she sponsored, and the people to whom Planned Parenthood gave awards well into the 1960s and 70s, are a Who\u2019s Who of the ugliest, most paranoid misanthropic elitists and white racists of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century \u2014 apart from those who were thankfully hanged at Nuremburg. After those trials, when \u201ceugenics\u201d had acquired a well-deserved taint, these same American elitists used the exaggerated threat of \u201coverpopulation\u201d to peddle the desperate need to control other people\u2019s fertility, if need be by forced sterilization \u2014 a policy which Sanger had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/projects\/sanger\/webedition\/app\/documents\/show.php?sangerDoc=101807.xml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">advocated since 1934<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The eugenicists, self-appointed experts on human quality of life, had peddled their theories not just in Britain and America but in Germany, where they helped to directly inspire Nazi sterilization and extermination programs aimed at the handicapped, Jews, and the small population of black or mixed race Germans \u2014 children of French colonial troops whom Hitler considered a grave menace to \u201cAryan\u201d racial \u201chygiene.\u201d One of Sanger\u2019s regular authors in <em>The Birth Control Review<\/em> wrote in a U.S. newspaper in the 1930s defending the forced sterilization of such mixed-race children, for the sake of Germany\u2019s \u201chealth.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>60,000 Victims in America, and Millions in Europe<\/h4>\n<p>Some 60,000 Americans, including current pro-life advocate <a href=\"https:\/\/stream.org\/the-washington-post-uses-eugenics-victim-and-pro-life-activist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elaine Riddick<\/a>, were forcibly sterilized under the laws Sanger helped write \u2014 which Nazi Germany acclaimed and used as models for its own laws.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Friends and associates of Sanger (such as <a href=\"http:\/\/faculty.ferris.edu\/ISAR\/archives\/eliminating-inferior.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Harry Laughlin<\/a>) accepted awards from Nazi-controlled universities, visited with Hitler and Himmler, and boasted that the forced sterilization programs which they had instituted in America were used as models by the Germans. One author who served on Sanger\u2019s board and published regularly in <em>The Birth Control Review<\/em> was <a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/21\/racist-lothrop-stoddard-director-for-margaret-sangers-birth-control-organization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lothrop Stoddard<\/a>, a high official of the Massachusetts Ku Klux Klan, whose book <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unilibrary.com\/ebooks\/Stoddard,%20Lothrop%20-%20The%20Rising%20Tide%20of%20Color%20Against%20White%20World%20Supremacy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Rising Tide of Color Against White World Supremacy<\/a><\/em>, Adolf Hitler cited in <em>Mein Kampf<\/em> as \u201cmy bible.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And then there\u2019s Eugen Fischer,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>whom Sanger <a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/2013\/03\/27\/to-eliminate-blacks-from-germany-hitler-called-on-eugenicist-which-had-a-leadership-role-in-margaret-sangers-population-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">featured as a speaker <\/a>at a population conference she organized. [He] had already <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thatlineofdarkness.com\/2014\/01\/eugen-fischer-and-genocide-in-south.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">run a concentration camp<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>\u2014 in German-ruled Southwest Africa, before World War I, where he murdered, starved and experimented on helpless native Africans. He would have been run out of the movie business.<\/p>\n<p>The Committee of the Five is still with us.
