Lora-Ellen McKinney claims in a recent Boston Globe\u00a0<\/span>op-ed<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that she had her first “abortion” at age 11 and \u201canother five or six between the ages of 12 and 21\u201d \u2014 yet McKinney also says\u00a0she has never been pregnant<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span>How can this be?<\/p>\n

It’s simple. She’s wrong. McKinney is conflating the use of a D&C (dilation and curettage) as a medical treatment for other purposes with the deliberate act of killing a preborn human being through use of this procedure.<\/p>\n

McKinney <\/span>claims<\/span><\/a> that \u201c[t]he abortions were [her] treatment\u201d for vascular-type Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (<\/span>vEDS<\/span><\/a>), a rare connective tissue disorder which is characterized by arterial rupture and uterine fragility, among other complications. <\/span>She\u00a0<\/span>states<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0\u201cIn concert with hormone shots, uterine packing, and birth-control pills, my D&Cs were mostly used to remove tissue overgrowths from my uterus, control uterine polyps, and to diagnose a precancerous condition called endometrial intraepithelial hyperplasia, in which the lining of the uterus becomes overly thick.\u201d These conditions can be <\/span>associated<\/span><\/a> with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, without a pregnancy, there can be no abortion. McKinney may have undergone many dilation and curettage (D&C) procedures, but she never had a single abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On its <\/span>Abortion Care<\/span><\/a> page, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) states (emphases added): \u201cInduced abortion ends a pregnancy<\/em> with medication or a medical procedure.\u201d If you hover your mouse over the words \u201cInduced abortion\u201d a pop-up definition appears: \u201cAn intervention to end a pregnancy<\/em> so that it does not result in a live birth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Rather more simply, the Cambridge Dictionary <\/span>defines<\/span><\/a> \u201cabortion\u201d as \u201cthe intentional ending of a pregnancy<\/em>.\u201d And the National Library of Medicine <\/span>defines<\/span><\/a> \u201cabortion\u201d as \u201ca procedure to end a pregnancy<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

McKinney is doing what so many others, including many <\/span>celebrities<\/span><\/a>, have done: she is conflating a legitimate medical procedure to treat a medical condition with the act of induced abortion. But the fact is, these are not synonymous. A D&C is only an abortion when it is used to <\/span>intentionally end the life of a preborn child<\/span><\/i>. If the child has already died (as in a natural miscarriage), the procedure is not an abortion. And if, as in McKinney\u2019s case, there is no child to begin with<\/em>, it most definitely is not an abortion \u2013 according to <\/span>any<\/span><\/i> medically accepted definition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is not the only point upon which McKinney is either wildly misguided or intentionally dishonest. \u201cWere I a young girl in most of the United States today,\u201d she <\/span>claims<\/span><\/a>, \u201c… I [would not] be allowed the procedures required to keep my challenged uterus healthy. This is because my treatments as dictated by doctors have now been politicized and miscast as something they are not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This is patently false. No<\/em> pro-life <\/span>law<\/span><\/a> prohibits D&Cs for reasons such as those which prompted McKinney to seek hers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, this is an incredibly ironic statement on McKinney\u2019s part, given that the one doing the \u201cmiscast[ing]\u201d is McKinney herself, and those politicizing procedures like D&Cs are her own pro-abortion allies. <\/span><\/p>\n

It is not pro-lifers who are conflating legitimate healthcare procedures with abortion \u2013 it\u2019s abortion advocates. \u201cAbortion is healthcare\u201d is one of their pet slogans\u00a0\u2014 a false mantra repeated as often as possible in order to convince the public that restricting abortion is tantamount to restricting medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be duped. <\/span><\/p>\n
