But in reality, the heart of the Post\u2019s concern is that more Catholic hospitals means fewer places abortions can be committed \u2014\u00a0even in states with entrenched abortion laws like California, Illinois, and Massachusetts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catholic healthcare is not a newcomer to the scene, and in fact has been providing healthcare in line with Catholic beliefs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursing.upenn.edu\/nhhc\/nurses-institutions-caring\/history-of-hospitals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">since the invention of hospitals by Catholics in the Middle Ages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Such attacks on Catholic healthcare are also not new, according to Sr. Mary Haddad, RSM, the president and chief executive officer of the Catholic Health Association. \u201cThey\u2019re trying to get at us for a long time, and now they\u2019re using Dobbs,\u201d Sister Haddad said, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americamagazine.org\/politics-society\/2022\/10\/12\/catholic-hospitals-abortion-243931\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">America Magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBut quite honestly, nothing has changed. This has always been the way Catholic [health networks] provided care in their communities. Will you join us in this life-saving work as a monthly donor today?<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many abortion advocates attempt to twist health care that respects both mother and preborn child into something it isn\u2019t, and the article\u2019s tagline proclaims that \u201creligious doctrine restricts access to abortion and birth control and limits treatment options for miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies.\u201d But treatment for ectopic pregnancies and miscarriages <em>do not require induced abortion<\/em>, as neonatologist Dr. Kendra Kolb <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ecourses.liveaction.org\/prolifereplies\/medically-necessary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">points out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Health care aims to \u201cdo no harm,\u201d and induced abortion \u2013 the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/roe-abortion-deliberate-violence-innocent-human\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">direct and intentional killing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a preborn baby \u2013 always deliberately takes a life, and therefore <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/prolifereplies.liveaction.org\/medically-necessary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is not legitimate health care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Hi-Kc5HLHP8\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPregnancy is a normal physiologic function, not a disease state. Interrupting this normal process is not health care. It is a surgical solution to a societal problem,\u201d wrote Dr. Ingrid Skop in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aaplog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/MFL-FRC-Top-Ten-Myths.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published by the American Academy of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) and the Family Research Council. \u201cThe vast majority of abortionists are employed by abortion clinics, and for many, this is the only medical procedure they do. They are merely technicians performing a procedure for money,\u201d Dr. Skop notes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Skop cited the results of a survey showing that the vast majority of physicians refuse to commit abortions. Among members of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exposing-acog-medical-organization-supports-abortion-industry\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the survey found that, while 97% of members received requests from patients for abortions, only 14% of ACOG members stated that they commit abortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating a disease process in a pregnant woman that may result in the foreseeable but unintended death of the preborn baby is also not an abortion, but instead is an example of a moral action via the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plato.stanford.edu\/entries\/double-effect\/#End\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">principle of double effect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As an AAPLOG <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/AAPLOG-response-to-ACOG-fact-sheet-final-edit.docx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fact sheet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> points out, \u201cThere are rare circumstances during pregnancy in which a mother\u2019s life is in jeopardy\u2026. It is extremely rare for this to occur prior to the point of viability (currently 22-23 weeks). In this circumstance, delivery is indicated. Intentional killing of the fetal human being, however, is not necessary. We can save the life of the mother through delivery of an intact infant and then give both the care that they need.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while abortion-supporters make noise about how lack of abortion is \u201cdangerous\u201d to women, few such claims rely on actual data. In fact, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/system\/files\/working_papers\/w23768\/w23768.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">working paper published in 2016<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that Catholic hospitals were not associated with maternal-fetal complications. \u201cWe find some evidence,\u201d the authors concluded, \u201cthat Catholic ownership [of hospitals] is in fact associated with a reduction in miscarriages that involve a complication, suggesting that anecdotal accounts may not be indicative of a widespread pattern.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pledge.liveaction.org\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=prolife_pledge\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-277267\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/pledge-live-action-ad-970x250-700x180.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A recent article in the Washington Post has targeted the growing influence of Catholic hospitals under the guise of concern for the health care provided there.
