Then, public outcry forced ownership to intervene.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dennis Peek, 53, had been employed at the Wendy\u2019s in Stanly, North Carolina, for over 20 years. Peek, who has Down syndrome, would clean up after customers inside the restaurant, washing tables and chairs. During his long tenure with the restaurant, he has been able to perform specific duties within his abilities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But before being dropped off by a caretaker for a shift last Wednesday, Cora Turner \u2013 Peek\u2019s sister \u2013 told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2022\/10\/06\/post-goes-viral-after-man-with-special-needs-fired-his-job-20-years-corporate-calling-it-an-unfortunate-mistake\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WBTV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that a manager fired him, and told Turner over the phone. It came as a shock, and Turner was devastated. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe is my baby brother; I got guardianship of him when my mom passed; he\u2019s like my kid; he\u2019s mine now,\u201d said Turner to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myfox8.com\/news\/north-carolina\/outrage-follows-controversial-firing-of-special-needs-employee-at-north-carolina-wendys\/amp\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WGHP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She complained he had been given no warning. \u201cShe just terminated him, she said she had a job that needed to be done, and he wasn\u2019t doing it [&#8230;] I was very upset, I was very upset,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hallmark-actress-down-syndrome-oscar\/\">Hallmark actress wants to be the first with Down syndrome to win an Oscar<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since posting about the incident on Facebook, Peek\u2019s firing has gone viral. Turner said in the post that he had been fired due to the limitations on his skills. \u201cThey told me [he] was unable to perform the duties of a normal person&#8217;s job,\u201d she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cona.turner\/posts\/pfbid035o5LX2MAM6qWQDMuC8La4tMA6KY2PJJxXXGxrkpg15TCtGDLs2USmrS4ggmgZ9ZWl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThey have no idea how they hurt my brother!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Described as a fun-loving individual who always had a smile on his face, Dennis said had always wanted to work at Wendy&#8217;s because of the food. \u201cA lot of food to eat. It\u2019s good stuff. I love Baconator,\u201d he said. \u201cI love my job at Wendy\u2019s.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peek had been looking forward to his retirement, but now Turner does not know what her brother will do. \u201cHe don\u2019t understand and we can\u2019t tell him he was terminated. We have not told him and we won\u2019t tell him,\u201d said Turner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Carolina Restaurant Group, which owns and operates the Wendy\u2019s, contacted Turner as her Facebook post gained media attention. It insisted that the firing was a mistake and that Peek could be reinstated the following week. \u201cWe are committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for our employees and our customers. This was an unfortunate mistake and lapse in protocol; we are in touch with the employee\u2019s family, and we are looking forward to welcoming him back to work in the restaurant,\u201d the Carolina Restaurant Group said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disability Rights North Carolina has voiced their concerns about the Peek\u2019s firing. \u201cIt turns into discrimination, especially when somebody\u2019s making generalizations about someone\u2019s disabilities and stereotypes about what they can and can\u2019t do, when it\u2019s no longer based on what they\u2019re doing, but fears around their own limitations,\u201d said attorney Christopher Hodgson to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsoctv.com\/news\/local\/man-with-down-syndrome-fired-local-wendys-without-notice-family-says\/JK6T6MDJIRH7HIRDSS7KB4TBV4\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WSOC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When questioned about the manager who fired Peek, the Wendy\u2019s Media Relations department responded with a statement, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wccbcharlotte.com\/2022\/10\/07\/employee-with-down-syndrome-fired-from-wendys-in-stanly\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WCCB Charlotte<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cWe cannot comment further on personnel matters, but we\u2019re taking appropriate action. This was an unfortunate mistake that we\u2019re working through with the team member, his job coach and family. We\u2019re also using this as an opportunity to retrain all our teams on our protocols.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turner said in an update to her Facebook post that, although Peek had been offered his old job back, he would be retiring instead. \u201cDennis will not be returning to Wendy\u2019s,\u201d she said in her latest update to her post. \u201cHe will be having his BIG RETIREMENT party that he has been wanting. Wendy\u2019s has offered to help with expenses and anything else they can for his special day.
