{"id":277537,"date":"2022-10-13T16:41:41","date_gmt":"2022-10-13T21:41:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=277537"},"modified":"2024-02-14T21:04:43","modified_gmt":"2024-02-15T03:04:43","slug":"shielding-abortion-providers-consequences-women-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/shielding-abortion-providers-consequences-women-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Why shielding abortion providers from consequences puts women&#8217;s lives at risk"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>When Philadelphia abortionist\u00a0Kermit Gosnell was found guilty of first-degree murder for killing three viable babies born alive during abortion procedures and was also found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a woman who died at his facility during a procedure, the abortion industry referred to him as an \u2018outlier\u2019 and anomaly \u2013 and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/2013\/10\/11\/fox-news-contributor-sally-kohn-spins-on-gosnells-house-of-horrors-abortion-clinic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>\u00a0played along. In May of 2013, Gosnell was sentenced to life in prison, leaving the abortion industry and its\u00a0supporters who turned a blind eye to Gosnell\u2019s\u00a0actions unscathed.<\/p>\n<p>In 1989, the Miami Herald\u2019s Tropic Magazine ran a multi-page expos\u00e9 into Florida abortion facilities and providers, entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/decades-old-media-expose-lack-curiosity\/\">Do Not Enter<\/a>,\u201d which uncovered shocking, and horrific things happening inside <em>legal<\/em> abortion facilities in that state. Then,\u00a0in 2011, in the midst of the Gosnell scandal, Slate writer William Saletan <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/news-and-politics\/2011\/02\/the-kermit-gosnell-of-florida-ignoring-unsafe-abortions-and-death-at-the-dadeland-family-planning-center.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a>\u00a0cover-ups within Florida&#8217;s abortion industry as &#8220;The Sisterhood of Silence.&#8221; The subtitle to his damning article read: &#8220;A bad abortion clinic, a dead woman, and a wall of pro-choice denial.&#8221; Years prior, the Philadelphia Inquirer dared to expose that babies were being born alive after failed abortions and documented their shocking findings in a report entitled the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-live-birth-dilemma-haunted-abortion-profiteers-since-legalization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dreaded Complication<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Those media reports followed a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/time-journalists-expose-abortion-industry-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1970s<\/a>\u00a0Chicago Sun Times investigation which also uncovered horrific conditions inside abortion facilities. The five-month investigative series, dubbed the \u201cAbortion Profiteers,\u201d documented <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/journalists-exposed-abortion-profiteers-assembly-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion assembly lines<\/a>\u00a0and providers who performed abortions on women who were not pregnant, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/journalists-exposed-abortion-profiteers-car-salesmen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unqualified staff<\/a>, instances of serious infections and complications, and health inspectors who <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/journalists-abortion-profiteers-dozen-women-died\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">turned<\/a> a blind eye. Abortion businesses were more interested in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/journalists-abortion-profiteers-business-selling-abortions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">selling abortion<\/a> than the safety of women.<\/p>\n<p>Since all of these events, from the 1970s to the early 2000s, little has changed.<\/p>\n<p>Protecting (indemnifying) abortion providers from civil and criminal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/sos\/-\/media\/Project\/Websites\/sos\/24delrio\/Reproductive_Freedom_for_All_747778_7.pdf?rev=a51e8ef7772546bc86058eb68765c97e&amp;hash=96107C919479F71BAC345B4509DA11AD\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">culpability<\/a> puts women&#8217;s lives at risk, benefiting abortionists while leaving women or teen girls lured into the dark and often unscrupulous web of unregulated abortion to deal with the fallout of their abortion injuries \u2014 and some have died. Her uterus was punctured and her uterine artery severed on January 7, 1989, while undergoing a 19-week abortion at the Y&amp;P Women&#8217;s Medical Association abortion business in New York City. She died eight days later at a local hospital.<\/p>\n<p>The Syracuse Herald American alleged that after Zelikman committed the abortion on Agbagaa, he continued to commit abortions on other women before leaving the facility, while Agbagaa lay bleeding in recovery. The woman was left by Zelikman in the care of of abortion facility administrator Yolanda Penalver, who was not a licensed health care professional yet allegedly administered anesthesia to the abortion client.<\/p>\n<p>Agbagaa&#8217;s friend, who accompanied her that day, unsuccessfully attempted to summon Zelikman back to the facility. Zelikman was cited by the Health Commissioner for &#8220;patient neglect and abandonment&#8221; and his medical license was later suspended.\u00a0An autopsy revealed Agbagaa &#8220;expired with the collapse of her heart, kidneys and liver, and after days of massive bleeding,&#8221; the paper reported.<\/p>\n<p>In 1993, New York abortionist Dr. Abu Hayat \u2014 nicknamed the \u201cButcher of Avenue A\u201d \u2014 severed the arm of little Ana Rosa Rodriguez while attempting an illegal third-trimester abortion. Her 20-year-old mother, Rosa Rodriguez, was about eight months pregnant when Hayat attempted the $1500 procedure.\u00a0Rodriguez\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1241&amp;dat=19930224&amp;id=UH5TAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=FIYDAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=4468,2768509&amp;hl=en\">claimed she was<\/a>\u00a0strapped in stirrups and held down by Hayat and his assistants. She testified that she begged him to stop the abortion after he inserted a four-inch needle in her stomach that appeared dirty, and she began hearing women in other rooms screaming.\u00a0Hayat was found guilty of assault, and in June of 1993, was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1320&amp;dat=19930615&amp;id=VkFWAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=cOoDAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=4279,4410439\">sentenced<\/a>\u00a0to prison\u00a0but was\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/nysdoccslookup.doccs.ny.gov\/GCA00P00\/WIQ3\/WINQ130\">released<\/a>\u00a0on parole in 2006. He was discharged from parole supervision in 2009 and his sentence has been deemed completed.\u00a0He tried to have his name changed but a judge\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lifenews.com\/2005\/05\/26\/state-1056\/\">refused<\/a>\u00a0his request. See video of Ana Rosa and her mother on the Phil Donahue show\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/tCwf-XIHXqw\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_191226\" style=\"width: 1090px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-191226\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-191226\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/ana-rosa-mother-to-tell-daughter.jpg\" alt=\"Image: News report of Ana Rosa Rodriguez born alive after failed abortion\" width=\"1080\" height=\"675\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-191226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">News report of Ana Rosa Rodriguez born alive after failed abortion<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/08\/09\/nyregion\/abortion-doctor-guilty-of-murder.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by the New York Times\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/07\/20\/nyregion\/witness-describes-botched-abortion-scene.html?searchResultPosition=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a>\u00a0the abortion related death of 33-year-old Guadalupe Negron this way: &#8220;As her life drained from her, Guadalupe Negron sat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/08\/13\/nyregion\/doctor-faces-murder-count-in-abortion.html?searchResultPosition=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bleeding<\/a> on an operating table, drowning in her own vomit as a doctor fumbled in a failed attempt to get oxygen into her lungs.&#8221;\u00a0The paper states she &#8220;bled to death in the [abortion] doctor&#8217;s storefront Metro Women&#8217;s Clinic on July 9, 1993 in Corona, Queens [New York],&#8221; at the hands of abortionist David Benjamin, whose own staffers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/07\/18\/nyregion\/witness-says-abortion-doctor-neglected-patient-who-died.html?searchResultPosition=9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">testified<\/a> that Negron was left bleeding unattended for over an hour while Benjamin committed other abortions. She was 19 to 20 weeks pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/08\/13\/nyregion\/doctor-faces-murder-count-in-abortion.html?searchResultPosition=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paid<\/a> $800 for the abortion, which &#8220;caused a three inch tear in the Negron&#8217;s uterus and vagina, and then left her to bleed to death in the recovery room while he performed an abortion on a second woman,&#8221; the paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/08\/09\/nyregion\/abortion-doctor-guilty-of-murder.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>. Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown claims Negron was placed in a corridor after her abortion, where she was &#8220;bleeding profusely from her pelvic area and complaining of intense pain,&#8221; the New York Times wrote. &#8220;Dr. Benjamin is alleged to have given instructions that Mrs. Negron be &#8216;cleaned up&#8217; and then to have begun an abortion procedure on another patient,&#8221; Brown claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Paramedic Freddie Neboa arrived at the abortion business to find the woman dead. &#8220;When we first entered, there was a lot of blood on everything, on the table, on her genital area, on the floor and instrument,&#8221; he said,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/07\/16\/nyregion\/hospital-says-it-barred-doctor-in-abortion-death.html?searchResultPosition=10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describing<\/a> the facility as a &#8220;horror scene.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-219554 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Abortion-doc-David-Benjamin-murdered-patient-NYT-8-9-1995.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion doc David Benjamin murdered patient (NYT's 8\/9\/1995)\" width=\"777\" height=\"409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Abortion-doc-David-Benjamin-murdered-patient-NYT-8-9-1995.jpg 845w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Abortion-doc-David-Benjamin-murdered-patient-NYT-8-9-1995-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Abortion-doc-David-Benjamin-murdered-patient-NYT-8-9-1995-768x404.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Abortion-doc-David-Benjamin-murdered-patient-NYT-8-9-1995-700x369.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Abortion-doc-David-Benjamin-murdered-patient-NYT-8-9-1995-500x263.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 777px) 100vw, 777px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Abortion doc David Benjamin murdered patient (NYT\u2019s 8\/9\/1995)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While she continued to hemorrhage, the indictment said, no medical personnel observed her condition and no equipment was used to monitor her vital signs,&#8221; the Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/08\/13\/nyregion\/doctor-faces-murder-count-in-abortion.html?searchResultPosition=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. &#8220;Mrs. Negron was then taken to New York Hospital Center in Queens, where she was pronounced dead.&#8221; The paper also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1993\/08\/13\/nyregion\/doctor-faces-murder-count-in-abortion.html?searchResultPosition=4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that &#8220;an autopsy showed Mrs. Negron had died of uncontrolled bleeding caused after Dr. Benjamin perforated her uterus and cervix and then failed &#8216;to address the patient&#8217;s massive bleeding,&#8217; which he said caused her &#8216;to lapse into shock and cardiac arrest&#8217; alone and untreated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Images of the abortion facility shown at Benjamin&#8217;s trial were described by jurors as &#8220;disgusting&#8221; and &#8220;unsanitary&#8221; and a &#8220;Medicaid mill that preyed on poor immigrant women.&#8221;\u00a0In 1995, Benjamin was\u00a0convicted of second-degree murder\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/09\/13\/nyregion\/25-years-to-life-for-doctor-in-woman-s-death-after-a-bungled-abortion.html?searchResultPosition=13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sentenced<\/a> to 25 years to life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More Modern Cases<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Cape Cod abortionist Rapin Osathanondh was charged with manslaughter, and authorities alleged that he failed to monitor his abortion patient Laura Hope Smith while she was under anesthesia. He also delayed calling emergency services when her heart stopped and later lied to try to cover up his actions.\u00a0 She was pronounced dead later that day. (Read more\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/lifedynamics.com\/laura-hope-smith-dead-legal-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>In 2012, Planned Parenthood left Tonya Reaves, a young Black woman,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-details-on-the-death-of-tonya-reaves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bleeding<\/a> after her abortion in Chicago. She died later at the hospital. The abortion providers in her case were never arrested or charged with a crime. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/operationrescue.org\/pdfs\/Reaves%20Autopsy%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autopsy report<\/a> is a tragic record of Planned Parenthood&#8217;s negligence.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=L5LF3TgjpNY&amp;t=1s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016<\/a>, legal abortion also took the life of 24-year-old\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/brother-woman-died-planned-parenthood\/\">Cree Erwin-Sheppard<\/a>\u00a0after she visited a Michigan Planned Parenthood facility.<\/p>\n<p>Watch her brother describe the horror below:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/x4m2tpNCxpE\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In February 2015, an Arizona court rejected an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cases.justia.com\/arizona\/court-of-appeals-division-one-unpublished\/2015-1-ca-cr-13-0620.pdf?ts=1423760412\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeal<\/a>\u00a0by Phoenix abortionist Brian Finkel, who was\u00a0originally charged\u00a0with 67 counts of sexual assault. Finkel, who once committed\u00a020%\u00a0of Arizona\u2019s abortions, was convicted of 22 of those counts of sexual assault on his abortion patients and was sentenced in 2004 to nearly 35 years in prison. Gordon <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ruidosonews.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2017\/04\/14\/thomas-gordon-michigan-abortion-doctor\/100484654\/\">had his license to practice medicine suspended<\/a>\u00a0after failing\u00a0to notify state officials of his extensive criminal history. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/michigan-abortionist-extensive-criminal-history-medical-license-suspended\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gordon<\/a>, who\u00a0has a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/arrested-michigan-abortionist-has-history-assault-domestic-violence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long history<\/a> of criminal offenses, was the medical director at the Heritage Clinic in Grand Rapids, a National Abortion Federation-affiliated clinic. That same year, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-facility-responsible-keisha-atkins-death-settlement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Keisha Atkins<\/a>\u00a0underwent a late-term abortion at 24 weeks pregnant and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/documents-keisha-atkins-drugged-before-abortion-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">died<\/a>\u00a0as a result. The\u00a0University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/2497307\/unm-clinic-settle-for-126m-in-lateterm-abortion-death.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paid a settlement<\/a> for\u00a0negligently referring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/abortiontrials\/posts\/today-is-keisha-atkins-birthday-but-we-dont-get-to-celebrate-it-with-hershe-turn\/141249310869837\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atkins<\/a> to the Southwestern Women\u2019s Options abortion business in Albuquerque where &#8220;she suffered cardiac arrest and became pulseless,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/2497307\/unm-clinic-settle-for-126m-in-lateterm-abortion-death.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media reports<\/a> state.
