Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to the article, interest has, at least anecdotally, increased dramatically <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even amongst teens who are not sexually active<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suggesting that the fear-mongering, gloom-and-doom tone now rampant in mainstream media articles has been largely effective on this age group. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But do teens know what risks they\u2019re incurring when they roll up their sleeves for an implant or undergo intrauterine device (IUD) insertion?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>URGENT: <\/i><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/future-of-abortion\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=minibomb\"><b>We need 10 new monthly donors today to reach millions with content proven to change minds and save lives. Donate today.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Increased interest in LARCs predates the <i>Roe<\/i> decision<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AP interviewed a Rutgers University professor and former long-time <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-continued-ties-planned-parenthood\/\">Guttmacher Institute<\/a> employee whose research suggests that use of LARCs was already on the rise long before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was overturned. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Laura Lindberg found that 15% of 15-19 year olds utilized LARCs between 2015 and 2019, while just 3% of that population was using them between 2006 and 2010. Undoubtedly, though, the downfall of Roe accelerated that trend. On June 24th, Planned Parenthood reported that online birth control appointments were up 150% over an average day, and up 375% among IUD-seekers specifically, and whose<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthoods-new-chatbot-targets-vulnerable-minors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infamous teen chatbot<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/selling-sex-schools-whos-behind-ed-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roo<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reportedly\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received more than double the usual number of birth control-related queries. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Months later, online birth control appointments allegedly remain elevated by 20% over the previous average.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What do young women know about IUD and implant safety?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The AP story referenced a 16-year-old Florida teen who opted for the Nexplanon implant, which it referred to simply as \u201ca reversible matchstick-sized contraceptive.\u201d The girl\u2019s mother, who commented in Spanish, said she liked that the implant didn\u2019t require her daughter to remember to take a pill every day. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story doesn\u2019t mention any side effects or complications of long-acting reversible contraceptives, and one wonders: what were this mother-daughter duo taught about the implant\u2019s risks and side effects? And what do young women across the U.S. know about the potential complications of IUD use? Precious little, in all likelihood, especially when organizations like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/news\/Pages\/Updated-Recommendations-on-Contraception-and-Adolescents.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Pediatrics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> promote LARCs to the general public as \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the most effective methods to prevent pregnancy\u201d without any mention of their risks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/powertodecide.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resources\/primary-download\/whoops-proof-birth-control-2017.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancies celebrating an ad campaign\u2019s success in increasing LARC use by South Carolina teens, when 18-45 year olds were surveyed about their knowledge of IUDs and implants, \u201cmost say they know \u2018little or nothing\u2019 about Implants (77%) and IUDs (68%).\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many know that Bayer, manufacturer of the popular Mirena IUD, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bayer-billion-settle-birth-control-lawsuits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paid out $1.6 billion <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">just two years ago to settle nearly <em>40,000 lawsuits<\/em> related to damages inflicted on users of its now-defunct permanent birth control device Essure? How many know that the arm implant Nexplanon\u2019s precursor<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalinjuryhelp.com\/nexplanon-lawsuit-claims-settlements\/#:~:text=Lawsuits%20are%20being%20filed%20against%20Organon%20and%20its,and%20stroke.%20These%20are%20not%20class%20action%20lawsuits.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Implanon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/birth-control-implant-may-not-stay-in-your-arm-nexplanon-side-effects-1-2019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">subject of many class action lawsuits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alleging failure to provide informed consent about its many risks?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What young women don\u2019t know could hurt them: Side effects and complications of IUDs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uterine perforation<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four of the five IUDs currently on the market (Mirena, Klyeena, Skyla, Liletta) are hormonal IUDs, containing a synthetic form of the naturally occurring hormone progesterone. The fifth (Paragard) is copper-based. Plastic, T-shaped IUDs are intended to sit in the uterus, but in rare cases, perforation of the uterus, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">large intestine, small intestine, rectum, appendix, urinary tract, bladder, or ureter by the IUD can occur. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0140673622000150?dgcid=author\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 FDA-funded study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the Lancet found that while uterine perforation rates by IUDs were relatively rare, their incidence ranged from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six to 42 times higher<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5683155\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously thought<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depending on the population studied. The Lancet study prompted a label change for Mirena IUDs to encourage any user with new onset pain or change in bleeding patterns to contact their healthcare provider to rule out uterine perforation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unintended pregnancy<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11606-022-07433-4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2022 research study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the University of California at San Francisco found that typical use rates of unintended pregnancy in the first year after IUD insertion were <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the \u201cless than 1 percent\u201d routinely touted by everyone from the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/free-publications-women\/birth-control#LARC\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/infographics\/effectiveness-of-birth-control-methods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UCSF researchers found that unintended pregnancy rates were actually 2.4% for progestin IUD users and 2.99% for copper IUD users. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk of pregnancy is naturally highest in women who experience IUD expulsion (the IUD falls out). A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33189897\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found a 9% accidental expulsion rate amongst adolescent women. Young women who were overweight and\/or had a history of anemia or bleeding problems were at highest risk for accidental expulsion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The UCSF study further found that a year after insertion, progestin IUD and copper IUD users respectively reported: pain somewhere other than the abdomen in 15% and 13% of users, abdominal pain with gastrointestinal symptoms in 10% and 9% of users, pelvic pain in 6% of both IUD and copper users, and menstrual issues for 5% and 6% of users.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other side effects<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Cleveland Clinic, progestin IUD users may experience \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irregular periods, missed periods, increased risk of developing non-cancerous ovarian cysts, breast tenderness, headaches, mood changes, nausea.\u201d Copper IUD users may experience \u201cheavy period bleeding, painful menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), increased risk of developing non-cancerous ovarian cysts,\u201d which can be very painful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/commonly-asked-questions-about-the-copper-iud-a-natural-womanhood-copper-iud-faq-copper-toxicity-2020\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Womanhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> further notes that in copper IUD users, copper toxicity, while rare, may be possible. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acrabstracts.org\/abstract\/contraceptive-factors-are-associated-with-serum-antibodies-to-citrullinated-protein-antigens-in-women-at-elevated-risk-for-future-rheumatoid-arthritis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> presented at the 2014 meeting of the American College of Rheumatology found that inflammation caused throughout the body by the copper IUD (which works to prevent pregnancy<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/birth-control\/copper-iud#what-it-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in part<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by stimulating inflammation in the uterine lining) could potentially predispose some women to developing rheumatoid arthritis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IUDs contraindicated for active STI infection<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/23269-larc#:~:text=Long-acting%20reversible%20conception%20%28LARC%29%20is%20birth%20control%20that,a%20device%20your%20provider%20implants%20into%20your%20arm.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201cyou shouldn\u2019t get an IUD or implant if you have a sexually transmitted infection (STI),\u201d which disqualifies a large percentage of teen girls. The CDC <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/life-stages-populations\/stdfact-teens.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that in 2018, fully half of the 26 million new STI diagnoses were among 15-24 year olds, though the site does not say how many were among 15-24 year old <em>girls<\/em>. And this<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5856484\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported that 1 in 4 sexually active females was estimated to have at least one STI.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Side effects and complications of implants<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/woman-settlement-birth-control-implant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">well-known complication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/birth-control-implant-may-not-stay-in-your-arm-nexplanon-side-effects-1-2019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon arm implant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use is migration (like this young woman <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/terrifying-womans-birth-control-implant-migrated-lung\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experienced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), unintended movement of the implant from the arm to someplace else in the body. Back in 2016, the FDA deemed the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/birth-control-implanted-school\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">migration risk <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high enough to add a warning to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.organon.com\/product\/usa\/pi_circulars\/n\/nexplanon\/nexplanon_ppi.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexplanon label<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a hormonal contraceptive, Nexplanon additionally carries the regular risks of hormonal birth control, including increased risk of potentially life-threatening or even fatal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-risky-hormonal-contraceptives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the risk is higher in women who smoke and\/or are overweight. The label cautions that 10% of women in research studies had their implant removed because of menstrual problems. \u201cOther frequent side effects\u201d include \u201cmood swings, weight gain, headache, acne,\u201d and \u201cdepressed mood,\u201d a particularly concerning possibility (we reported on one college student\u2019s experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/college-student-contraceptive-implant-suicidal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in an adolescent population already at increased risk of mental health problems. More common side effects include vaginitis, viral infections, back pain, stomach pain, and nausea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>LARCs pose real risks to young women<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The media and medical organizations do young women no favors by glossing over or omitting altogether the significant risks that come with IUD or implant use. They deserve to know all the possible side effects or complications so that they can provide truly informed consent. That fact hasn\u2019t changed since the overturning of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v.
