{"id":277348,"date":"2022-10-06T08:40:13","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T13:40:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=277348"},"modified":"2022-10-11T16:01:53","modified_gmt":"2022-10-11T21:01:53","slug":"mother-jones-hit-piece-natural-family-planning-got-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mother-jones-hit-piece-natural-family-planning-got-right\/","title":{"rendered":"What Mother Jones&#8217; hit piece on natural family planning got right"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progressive publication Mother Jones (MJ) has made no secret of its full-throated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/?s=abortion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion advocacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so perhaps it should come as little surprise that a recent article that purported to discuss the effectiveness of fertility awareness methods for pregnancy prevention (also known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/natural-family-planning-essential-skill-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natural family planning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) instead fixated on\u2026\u00a0<em>abortion<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2022\/09\/inside-anti-abortion-groups-campaign-to-sell-women-on-unreliable-birth-control-alternatives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInside Anti-Abortion Groups\u2019 Campaign to Sell Women on Unreliable Birth Control \u2018Alternatives,\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the article began with a personal story of a woman from England referred to only as Kat, who allegedly went off the birth control pill in 2017 and utilized the Natural Cycles app for 10 months before conceiving unexpectedly. According to the article, \u201cKat\u201d procured an abortion. The article wraps up neatly with an ominous warning that, if she had conceived in post-Roe America, Kat might have been unable to access an abortion. Between its dramatic opening lines and bleak conclusion, the sprawling 3700+ word article relied heavily on mischaracterizations, peppered liberally with supposed \u201cgotcha!\u201d moments, to emphasize the supposed unreliability of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-dont-fear-fertility-awarenss-methods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fertility awareness methods of family planning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><i>URGENT: <\/i><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/future-of-abortion\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=minibomb\"><b>We need 10 new monthly donors today to reach millions with content proven to change minds and save lives. Donate today.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MJ is welcome to dig up \u201cdirt\u201d about the supposedly nefarious pro-life motivations undergirding the work of any individual or organization advocating for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-learn-bodies-planned-parenthood-isnt-teach\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased body literacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and improved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/contraception-ads-period-valuable-womens-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health outcomes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that women utilizing<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/revolutionize-sex-education-teach-women-bodies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fertility awareness methods <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can enjoy \u2014 without the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/birth-control-hormonal-natural-fertility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects of hormonal birth control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But can Mother Jones pull off a true takedown of fertility awareness methods\u2019 (FAMs) effectiveness, or is its only ammo repeatedly insisting that fertility awareness advocates can\u2019t be trusted because they themselves, or those they align with, oppose abortion?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>(Not so) full disclosure?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mother Jones took significant umbrage with fertility awareness advocates\u2019 own pro-life views and\/or their affiliations with pro-life organizations. A primary person of interest was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/georgetown-elective-future-doctors-fertility-awareness\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Marguerite Duane<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pro-life family physician who founded FACTS, the Fertility Appreciation Collaborative to Teach the Science. MJ highlighted Duane\u2019s various pro-life intiatives and alliances (such as her work with the Charlotte Lozier Institute) and her \u201cfailure\u201d to provide full disclosure of all such initiatives and alliances before every scientific presentation she makes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MJ also called into question the motives of the Guiding Star Project (described at length <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hope-knowledge-pro-life-woman-centered-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a network of \u201cwholistic\u201d women\u2019s health centers which believe \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women have the right and ability to make an informed choice about whether to achieve or avoid pregnancy\u2014without harmful contraceptives,\u201d and that, in the words of founder Leah Jacobson, \u201cabortion is a poor substitute for women\u2019s health care services.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Two can play the selective disclosure game<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action research fellow Carole Novielli found that Mother Jones engaged in some selective disclosure of its own when it quoted epidemiologist <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/chelseapolis.com\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chelsea Polis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whose employment history (including her current position at the Population Council) includes multiple openly pro-abortion companies and organizations, such as the University of California-San Francisco\u2019s Bixby Center for Reproductive Health and Ibis Reproductive Health. MJ referenced Polis\u2019 previous employment by the Guttmacher Institute without specifying that the Guttmacher Institute was formerly Planned Parenthood\u2019s research arm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_277351\" style=\"width: 929px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-277351\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-277351 \" Investigative Reporting\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reveal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> project (a collaborator on the MJ article) is also on the board of Planned Parenthood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_277352\" style=\"width: 813px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-277352\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"(max-width: 803px) 100vw, 803px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-277352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot: Reveal<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Mother Jones\u2019 \u201carguments\u201d are primarily ad hominem attacks\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MJ\u2019s \u201cgotcha\u201d attitude seemed to claim victory for keyboard warrior sleuthing, going so far as to dig up a 2012 fundraising speech by Jacobson as \u201cproof\u201d of her organization\u2019s covert opposition to abortion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jacobson told Live Action News that the MJ author\u2019s \u201cfollow-up questions after the interview were heavily focused on outing me as a Catholic and anti-abortion, like those things would automatically discredit any scientific basis for promoting natural fertility methods.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MJ\u2019s trump card for proof of FAMs\u2019 illegitimacy was support for them from pro-life organizations like Students for Life of America and Live Action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the underlying assumption throughout the article \u2014\u00a0namely that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anyone who opposes abortion or affiliates with a pro-life organization is immediately untrustworthy, and their ability to speak knowledgeably about any topic (including fertility awareness) should be automatically written off<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(phrased another way, \u201canyone who believes x is a bad person and is utterly discredited\u201d) \u2014 is an ad hominem argument, a poor substitute for actually engaging fertility awareness advocates\u2019 arguments of pregnancy prevention effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Just the facts about fertility awareness effectiveness for pregnancy prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MJ article author writes \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [fertility awareness advocates] are also promoting the false idea that cycle-tracking methods of birth control are just as effective at preventing pregnancy as hormonal contraception.\u201d MJ then quotes Polis, whose affiliations are mentioned above.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quoting Polis in this context is appropriate since she was a co-author on an important<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30095777\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 systematic review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (referred to below as the Urritia study,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in-depth exploration of several limitations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/unpacking-the-effectiveness-range-of-fams-given-by-the-cdc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-deserve-truth-hormone-free-family-planning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy prevention effectiveness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of modern, evidence-based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/understanding-bodys-cycles-empowers-women-girls\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fertility awareness methods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As freely acknowledged in 2021 by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/unpacking-the-effectiveness-range-of-fams-given-by-the-cdc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Womanhood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (a prominent fertility awareness website, for whom I also write), \u201cThe Urritia study is a rigorous, detailed analysis. Collectively, FAMs do indeed report a failure rate of 2-23%.\u201d In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/contraception\/index.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cited this same study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when it updated its typical use effectiveness stats from 24% collectively for all fertility awareness methods to a range (2-23%), stratified by method. Certainly, many more women are likely to be open to using a FAM with a 2% typical use failure rate than one with a 23% typical use failure rate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>What the Mother Jones article gets right<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polis, who wrote reasonably even-handedly about fertility awareness methods in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elemental.medium.com\/an-experts-look-at-fertility-awareness-methods-17e4bdf18006\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this 2019 article for Medium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (voluntarily pointing out that modern, evidence-based FAMs cannot be equated with the antiquated rhythm method), is right in noting that much research on FAMs to date has not been high quality. But this is not a reflection <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the methods themselves<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It simply means that little research (and little funding) has been devoted to studying FAMs, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the research that has been done has not always been rigorous <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/effectiveness-of-fertility-awareness-methods-is-often-misrepresented\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is difficult to draw conclusions from<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, in some Creighton Method research, as a 2019 Mother Jones article <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2019\/10\/the-trump-administration-would-like-to-talk-to-you-for-a-second-about-your-cervical-mucus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">correctly noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, women who conceived were all presumed to have intentionally been seeking to get pregnant and were <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stratified based on whether or not they conceived intentionally. Whereas with contraception the intention is always to avoid pregnancy, user intention may vary from month to month for FAM users. They may be using their method at a given time to avoid pregnancy and at another time to achieve pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than throwing the baby out with the proverbial bathwater, the MJ article could have advocated for more and better-designed research that importantly takes into account a woman or couple\u2019s intention to avoid or achieve pregnancy. It could have pointed out that learning from a trained instructor is key to effectively using any FAM.
