Facebook’s former Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg, has announced that she is donating $3 million to the ACLU with the specific purpose of funding the legal organization’s work in helping to pass abortion-friendly laws. Her funding announcement came just one week after Sandberg stepped down as the COO of Meta, Facebook’s parent company.<\/p>\n

According to POLITICO<\/a>, the donation is the largest single donation to the ACLU earmarked specifically for abortion in the group’s history.<\/p>\n

Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the ACLU, says the money will be used to target voters in the upcoming elections.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Sheryl\u2019s support on abortion rights, we can kick it into overdrive and redouble the fight for abortion access in the states. We will educate voters on where their elected representatives stand on this important issue and turn the abortion issue into a referendum on candidates\u2019 courage and character,” Romero said. “We\u2019ll also invest heavily in ballot measures to ensure voters are heard loud and clear when legislatures and governors need to be overridden by the voices of the electorate. The midterm elections are the warm-up to the 2024 general election, when abortion access will certainly be on the ballot in almost every race.”<\/p>\n

\u201cFew things are more important to women\u2019s equality than access to safe and legal abortion,\u201d said<\/a>\u00a0Sandberg. \u201cToday, over one-third of women in the U.S. can\u2019t access safe abortions. We\u2019ve only just begun to see the devastating impact that state abortion bans will have on women’s health, and their ability to determine the course of their own lives. Now, more than ever, we must keep up the fight to defend our right to choose and protect abortion access. I am proud to work with the ACLU to educate voters and persuade more people who support rights for women to act \u2013 and restore rights that were taken from us.”<\/p>\n

Sandberg has long been an advocate for abortion and has previously donated<\/a>\u00a0millions<\/a> to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion business.<\/p>\n

In defending her commitment to abortion, Sandberg told POLITICO she heard her mother tell stories of young women who had to have “unsafe” abortions before the passage of Roe v. Wade<\/em>. \u201cShe had a friend who got pregnant and needed an abortion. She was from a family that could send her to another country where she had a safe and legal abortion,” she said. “But there were other people in the school she went to who were not able to access that and had everything from a botched, unsafe, illegal kind to the self-induced kind. People died and people had very long-term health consequences.”<\/p>\n

Sandberg’s argument that legal abortion is safe is misguided. It discounts the countless abortion injuries and even deaths that have occurred under legalized abortion.<\/p>\n

Live Action News routinely reports<\/a> on abortion injuries that occur at abortion facilities across the country. Far more injuries go unreported, especially as women take the abortion pill<\/a> at home and then transport themselves to the emergency room when complications arise. Jamie Lee Morales<\/a>, Lakisha Wilson<\/a>, Tonya Reaves<\/a>, Keisha Atkins<\/a>, and Cree Shepherd<\/a> are just a few of the women who have died from legal abortion.<\/p>\n

Making abortion legal does not make it any safer. Sadly, Sandberg’s large donation will only further go to fight for laws that endanger women and end the lives of their preborn children.<\/p>\n
