Wade<\/em>, several states have passed pro-life protections, while others have doubled down on their pro-abortion measures. And it now appears, based on research from a noted pro-abortion organization, that some of those extremely pro-abortion states are the ones who were already responsible for a high percentage of the nation&#8217;s total abortions.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, just two states \u2014 California\u00a0and New York \u2014 collectively committed well over 264,000 abortions \u2014 or <em><strong>nearly 30% of all abortions reported in the United States<\/strong><\/em>. California committed the highest number reported among all states and the District of Columbia (D.C.) in the nation, with New York coming in a close second, according to data <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-abortion-spike-2020-pregnancies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> by Planned Parenthood&#8217;s former &#8220;research arm&#8221; and &#8220;special affiliate,&#8221; the Guttmacher Institute.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, 2020 abortion totals from just <em>five<\/em> states made up nearly <em>half<\/em> of all abortions reported in the nation.<\/p>\n<p>National data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2022\/06\/long-term-decline-us-abortions-reverses-showing-rising-need-abortion-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a>\u00a0by Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-abortion-spike-2020-pregnancies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> that in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2022\/06\/long-term-decline-us-abortions-reverses-showing-rising-need-abortion-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a>, 930,160 abortions were committed nationally\u00a0\u2014\u00a0an increase of 67,840 over the\u00a0862,320\u00a0abortions reported in\u00a02017.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Just five states made up nearly half of reported abortions for 2020<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In 2020, state abortion data reported by Guttmacher showed that five states \u2014 California, New York, Florida, Texas and Illinois \u2014 accounted for nearly half (452,630) of all reported abortions (930,160) for 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the data also revealed that the total number of abortions in those top five states (452,630) nearly outpaced the remaining states, which each committed less than 50,000 abortions in 2020. At that time, Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/factsheet\/california_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0that the state had\u00a0512 abortion providers; 160 of those were clinics. By 2014, abortions in California had decreased to 157,350 (17.0% of all U.S. abortions), while the abortion rate declined 15% between 2011 and 2014, from 23 to 19.5 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age, Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20170928082019\/https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/state-facts-about-abortion-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. That same year, Guttmacher recorded &#8220;512 abortion-providing facilities in California in 2014, and 152 of those were clinics.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>By <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/state-facts-about-abortion-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017<\/a>, abortions decreased again to 132,680 in California (15.4% of all U.S. abortions) when Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/data.guttmacher.org\/states\/table?state=CA&amp;topics=57+58+62+61+63+65+66+71&amp;dataset=data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documented<\/a> 419 abortion providers (93 fewer than 2014) in the state, with 161 of those being clinics. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201119091317\/https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/state-facts-about-abortion-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guttmacher<\/a>, there was &#8220;a 16% decline in the abortion rate in California between 2014 and 2017, from 19.5 to 16.4 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But between 2017 (132,680) and 2020 (154,060), California abortions began to tick upward, increasing more than 16% in the state.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_277050\" style=\"width: 273px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-277050\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-277050\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/California-abortions-2000-to-2020.jpg\" alt=\"Image: California abortions 2000 to 2020\" width=\"263\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/California-abortions-2000-to-2020.jpg 263w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/California-abortions-2000-to-2020-159x300.jpg 159w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 263px) 100vw, 263px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-277050\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">California abortions 2000 to 2020<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/sites\/default\/files\/article_files\/attachments\/abortion_provider_census_2020_topline.xlsx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a>, Guttmacher&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-abortion-spike-2020-pregnancies\/\">state numbers<\/a> on abortions (the most currently published data) revealed 154,060 abortions were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/data.guttmacher.org\/states\/table?state=CA&amp;topics=57+58+62+61+63+65+66+71&amp;dataset=data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">committed<\/a> in California, nearly 17% of the national abortions reported to Guttmacher for the same year. The 2020\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/data.guttmacher.org\/states\/table?state=CA&amp;topics=57+58+62+61+63+65+66+71&amp;dataset=data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> also showed\u00a0that between 2017 and 2020, California&#8217;s abortion rate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/data.guttmacher.org\/states\/table?state=CA&amp;topics=57+58+62+61+63+65+66+71&amp;dataset=data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased<\/a>\u00a0over 17% from 2017 to in 2020.\u00a0Guttmacher has not yet published data on the number of providers and clinics that commit abortions in California.<\/p>\n<p>The 2020 data also shows that California committed <strong>the highest number of abortions<\/strong> among each of the 50 individual states and the District of Columbia. In addition, California abortions (154K) exceeded the combined number of abortions committed by 29 states and the District of Columbia (115,140). These include OK, DC, OR, KS, IN, LA, WI, NM, AL, SC, KY, MS, IA, AK, HI, UT, RI, ME, NE, NH, DE, ID, MT, AK, VT, ND, WV, MO, SD, and WY.<\/p>\n<p>One reason for the high numbers could be taxpayer-funded abortion in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2014 and 2020, California taxpayers funded approximately 411,000 abortions, costing nearly $118 million, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/data.chhs.ca.gov\/dataset\/abortion-related-services-funded-by-medi-cal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> from the State&#8217;s Medi-Cal website. This was the second highest recorded number among all 50 states and D.C., second only to California.\u00a0Guttmacher data from NY may differ slightly from <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-york-pregnancy-centers-4-million-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state data<\/a>, since Guttmacher surveys abortion providers.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, New York committed nearly the same amount (110,360) of abortions as the combined abortion totals (115,140) of 29 states and the District of Columbia. These include OK, DC, OR, KS, IN, LA, WI, NM, AL, SC, KY, MS, IA, AK, HI, UT, RI, ME, NE, NH, DE, ID, MT, AK, VT, ND, WV, MO, SD, and WY.<\/p>\n<p>Like California, abortions in New York for 2020 have also ticked upward over previous years.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/state-facts-about-abortion-new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recorded<\/a> 105,380 abortions committed in New York (12.2% of all US abortions), an &#8220;11% decline in the abortion rate in New York between 2014 and 2017, from 29.6 to 26.3 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age,&#8221; Guttmacher added. In 2014, there were 119,940 abortions committed in New York (12.9% of all US abortions) which represented &#8220;a 13% decline in the abortion rate in New York between 2011 and 2014, from 34.2 to 29.6 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age,&#8221; Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171119171211\/https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/state-facts-about-abortion-new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020, New York abortion\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/data.guttmacher.org\/states\/table?topics=57+58+62+61+63+65+66+71&amp;dataset=data&amp;state=NY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data<\/a> also showed that the abortion rate increased nearly 10%, from 2017\u00a0to 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Guttmacher&#8217;s abortion data\u00a0lags behind several years, and with the overturning of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> by the U.S. Supreme Court in the <em>Dobbs<\/em> case, it is likely that abortions will drastically increase in states such as California and New York \u2014 which place essentially no restrictions on abortion, funding them with <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/taxpayers-fund-abortion-more-happen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased<\/a> taxpayer dollars.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the reversal of Roe v.
