{"id":276844,"date":"2022-09-27T06:46:49","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T11:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=276844"},"modified":"2022-10-02T21:09:33","modified_gmt":"2022-10-03T02:09:33","slug":"off-label-drug-abortion-proponents-hypocrisy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/off-label-drug-abortion-proponents-hypocrisy\/","title":{"rendered":"When it comes to off-label drug use, abortion proponents exhibit massive hypocrisy"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2022\/09\/abortion-pill-misoprostol-effectiveness\/671465\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argues that in the light of restrictions around the abortion pill, a misoprostol-only regimen should be used \u2013 hypocritically using the many of the same arguments that abortion activists have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">denounced<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for years when it comes to Abortion Pill Reversal (APR), which is the use of the hormone progesterone to counteract the effects of mifepristone, the abortion pill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The abortion pill regimen is a combination of two pills: mifepristone (which starves the baby of nutrients by cutting off the progesterone that helps it grow) and misoprostol, which starts contractions that expel the baby from the uterus. Although mifepristone has other uses, for many years it was a tightly-controlled substance until the U.S. Food and Drug Administration&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-permanently-loosens-abortion-pill-safety-measure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REMS safety requirements were loosened for political reasons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gnEHZiud8dg\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1986, when misoprostol came on the market in Brazil to treat stomach ulcers, the drug came with a warning that it should not be taken by pregnant women as it could be potentially abortifacient \u2013 which was and remains illegal in Brazil. Yet, in a country where mifepristone is not available, women seeking abortions began using misoprostol in this off-label way to induce an abortion. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article portrayed this development as a \u201cfeminist\u201d triumph that should be emulated in the United States, where the FDA currently only approves the two-pill chemical abortion regimen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, for abortion activists at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">apparently only off-label uses are acceptable if they expand abortion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, an article in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/04\/are-abortions-reversible\/452325\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">specifically rejected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the idea of APR\u2019s off-label usage of progesterone, a natural hormone manufactured by the body during pregnancy, to stop a chemical abortion. \u201cAlthough not uncommon to use medication other than its FDA-approved labeled use, this usually happens after there&#8217;s been published research documenting the safety and effectiveness of the alternative use,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2015 article said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The article conveniently overlooked that the use of progesterone has an well-documented <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/abortion-pill-reversal-a-record-of-safety-and-efficacy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">history of safety and efficacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including decades of use to prevent miscarriages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, when it comes to clinical trials and scientific evidence, abortion activists seem to have a double standard. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article hails the results of non-clinical, self-reporting studies of women who used misoprostol only as groundbreaking, despite the fact that actual clinical studies have raised serious concerns. In these non-clinical studies, 93 to 100 percent of women report successful abortions with misoprostol only, versus 80 percent or less in the clinical studies. The author cites one international abortion activist who claims, based on these non-clinical studies in favor of using misoprostol only for abortion, \u201cit\u2019s time to reconsider the idea of the clinical trials data as being paramount.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While overlooking the potential shortcoming of these non-clinical misoprostol studies, abortion activists are quick to hammer APR studies for any possible deficiency \u2013 real or imagined. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pro-abortion American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG) denigrates APR studies by claiming they \u201cdo not meet clinical standards.\u201d While ACOG states that initial APR studies, conducted in 2012 with six participants, were \u201cnot scientific evidence,\u201d the pro-abortion group ignores the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30831017\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 follow-up study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that followed over 700 participants, and moreover showed a 64-68% APR success rate, reports the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aaplog.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2019-AAPLOG-Statement-on-Abortion-Pill-Reversal.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-abortion-pill-reversal-questionable-study\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Live Action News, the ACOG\u2019s medical journal published a questionable study based on a mere 12 participants \u2013 and funded by an abortion pill manufacturer \u2013 to further the narrative that APR is dangerous and unscientific.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even more, while abortion activists are willing to overlook the very real side effects of drugs like misoprostol, they raise grave concerns over the non-existent side effects of APR. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Atlantic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article dismissed incidents of cranial malformations in preborn babies as anecdotal and never proven, and as little more than a scare tactic citing a Brazilian newspaper\u2019s concern of birthing \u201ca generation of monsters.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, while the method of malformation is not well-studied or well-known, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.misoprostol.org\/misoprostol-teratogenicity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there are reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of cranial nerve damage, cleft palate, and other side effects to the preborn baby exposed to misoprostol. Additionally as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-complications-underreported-er-managing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action News has reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 5-8% of women who take the abortion pill experience severe complications including cramping, bleeding, and potential sepsis \u2013\u00a0 which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlantic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> article brushes aside as not \u201ca safety concern.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, abortion activists are quick to attack APR as dangerous and unproven, despite the fact that multiple <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-abortion-pill-reversal-safety-efficacy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have shown APR to be exceptionally safe for women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Abortion Pill Reversal protocol has saved many lives, and it has done so safely and effectively. However, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlantic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">double standards and inconsistent logic reveal that what matters is not on the truth nor on the strength of an argument, but only the end goal: furthering the cause of abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/?ref=br_rs\" target=\"_blank\"
