Marking a grim milestone, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has committed its first abortion under a new Biden administration interim rule, <\/span>NBC News reports<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

During <\/span>testimony<\/span><\/a> before the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee, VA Secretary Dennis McDonough received a question from Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville about how many abortions have taken place at VA facilities. In reply, McDonough confirmed that, so far, the VA has committed one abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Wednesday meeting\u2019s revelation occurred during testimony in a hearing about the <\/span>new rule that allows VA clinics to commit abortions<\/span><\/a> for pregnant veterans and eligible dependents in cases of rape and incest, or if the life or health of the mother is threatened, despite the fact that induced abortion \u2013 the <\/span>intentional killing<\/span><\/a> of a human life \u2013 is <\/span>not medically necessary<\/span><\/a>. According to McDonough, the Department of Justice (DOJ) reviewed the rule and deemed it a \u201clawful exercise of the VA\u2019s authority\u201d under the Constitution\u2019s Supremacy Clause, which establishes federal law as taking precedence over state laws, preventing states from penalizing \u201cfederal functions\u201d of the VA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cStates may not impose criminal or civil liability on VA employees\u2014including doctors, nurses, and administrative staff\u2014who provide or facilitate abortions or related services in a manner authorized by federal law, including VA\u2019s rule,\u201d the DOJ <\/span>statement read<\/span><\/a>. \u201cThe Supremacy Clause bars state officials from penalizing VA employees for performing their federal functions, whether through criminal prosecution, license revocation proceedings, or civil litigation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Pro-life legislators have pledged to fight the VA\u2019s new abortion policy. \u201cThis proposal is contrary to long-standing, settled law and a complete administrative overreach,\u201d said Rep. Mike Bost, the ranking member of the House VA Committee, when the policy was announced, according to the <\/span>Washington Post<\/span><\/a>. \u201cI oppose it and am already working to put a stop to it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The VA\u2019s interim abortion rule comes after the reversal of <\/span>Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i> and as many states have enacted pro-life laws protecting preborn babies from the violence of abortion. McDonough also suggested there was a concern for pregnant veterans\u2019 \u201csafety,\u201d even though <\/span>abortion complications are more common than reported in many locales<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe principle that led us to take this step is our veteran patient safety,\u201d McDonough said, according to <\/span>Honolulu Civil Beat<\/span><\/a>. \u201cWe take that very, very seriously and every decision we make flows from that principle.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono lauded the rule and the decision, adding: \u201cThere is absolutely no question that this will save lives,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, both McDonough and Hirono are discounting entirely the fact that induced abortion intentionally kills human beings, abortion is <\/span>not health care<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(because health care does not intentionally kill humans),\u00a0and there is <\/span>scant evidence<\/span><\/a> that induced abortion saves the lives of women.<\/span><\/p>\n
