{"id":276388,"date":"2022-09-19T20:30:25","date_gmt":"2022-09-20T01:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=276388"},"modified":"2023-11-06T19:31:36","modified_gmt":"2023-11-07T01:31:36","slug":"premature-baby-212-grams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/premature-baby-212-grams\/","title":{"rendered":"Premature baby born weighing just 212 grams is now a healthy two-year-old"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/premature-baby-weighing-just-212g-now-healthy-and-happy-two-year-old\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) &#8212; A baby born four months early in Singapore, weighing only 212g at birth, is now a healthy two-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Kwek Yu Xuan was born in June 2020,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/premature-baby-who-was-only-212g-now-healthy-and-happy-two-year-old\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four months before<\/a>\u00a0her due date, weighing only a tenth of what a newborn should weigh.<\/p>\n<p>She was born so prematurely that she had to stay in the National University Hospital (NUH) in Singapore for over a year before being discharged in June 2021, weighing 6.3kg. Even at that point she had chronic lung disease \u2013 a condition common in babies born extremely prematurely \u2013 and had to use a ventilator at home for oxygen assistance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhile Yu Xuan\u2019s chances of survival were low, the neonatal team cared for her around the clock, including with new innovative ways\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Today though, Yu Xuan no longer needs a ventilator. She does need a feeding tube through her nose, but apart from that, her mother reports that she is a healthy and happy child. Yu Xuan is now 10.2kg [22.5 lbs.], very close to the normal weight for a child her age.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Yvonne Ng, a senior consultant at the department of neonatology at NUH\u2019s Khoo Teck Puat \u2013 National University Children\u2019s Medical Institute, said her team follows up with the baby\u2019s growth and development as well as with the parents on how to cope with caring for the preterm baby at home.<\/p>\n<p>Health Minister Ong Ye Kung\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/premature-baby-who-was-only-212g-now-healthy-and-happy-two-year-old\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">praised<\/a>\u00a0the efforts of Yu Xuan\u2019s medical team: \u201cWhile Yu Xuan\u2019s chances of survival were low, the neonatal team cared for her around the clock, including with new innovative ways. They improvised feeding tubes, refashioned diapers for her small frame and took special care of her fragile skin to minimise infections\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Survival rates for extremely premature babies are improving all the time<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortion is available up to 24 weeks in the UK. However, the outcomes for premature babies with medical complications like Yu Xuan are improving all the time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/global-map-hospitals-saved-22-week-preemies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>\u2018Not hopeless\u2019: Global map shows hospitals confirmed to have saved 22-week preemies<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, John Wyatt, Professor of Ethics and Perinatology at University College London and also Emeritus Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics, Ethics &amp; Perinatology at University College London,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/parliamentarians-hear-from-expert-about-why-abortion-time-limits-should-be-lowered-in-line-with-the-latest-scientific-evidence\">presented evidence<\/a>\u00a0to parliamentarians from the UK and across the world showing \u201cthat there has been a steady improvement in the chances of survival of babies born at 22 and 23 weeks gestation since the Abortion Act was last amended [in 1990]\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson Catherine Robinson said: \u201cThe prospects for premature babies are improving all the time. Even babies like Yu Xuan with medical complications are able to survive and thrive thanks to advances in medical technology and the work of neonatal care units like the one in which Yu Xuan was treated.
