This past week, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced the launch of a new state-run website promoting abortion. The $1 million site<\/a> is part of a $200 million budget package aimed at strengthening abortion access in the state.<\/p>\n

The site, abortion.ca.gov, provides information for anyone who wants to access abortion in the state \u2014\u00a0even non-residents. It offers location information for 166 abortion facilities, along with details on how to get abortion pills by mail, and includes links for financial help, including abortion travel details.<\/p>\n

It also tells minors from out-of-state how to get an abortion in California without their parents’ permission, and has a section specifically telling undocumented immigrants how they can get Medicaid (taxpayer-funded) coverage for abortion.<\/p>\n

“I want people to know all around the rest of the country and many parts of the globe, that I hope we\u2019re your antidote to your fear, your anxiety,” says Newsom in a statement on the site’s homepage.<\/p>\n

While the website purports to give women “current and accurate information” about abortion, it’s missing some key details.<\/p>\n

For example, while the different types of abortion procedures are very briefly explained, there is no information as to the risks of each procedure, nor is there any explanation as to what each abortion procedure does to the child in the womb.\u00a0There is also absolutely no information listed for women who may be considering abortion but are also interested in learning about other options, like adoption or pregnancy support services.<\/p>\n
