Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Biden administration has committed the federal government, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pentagon-allow-abortion-websites-seamless-access\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including the military<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to promote abortion access in spite of significant pro-life protections in some states. However, a presentation by Gen. James McConville, the U.S. Army Chief of Staff, published this week is a sign of the limitations of the administration\u2019s pro-abortion policies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a virtual event via <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d1stateofdefense.com\/agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defense One<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Gen. McConville stated that the Army would not reassign soldiers who do not want to serve in duty stations in states with strong pro-life protections. According to Gen. McConville, servicemember duty station preferences will continue to be taken into account when possible, but pro-life laws will not be criteria for reassignment. Although the Army will try to accommodate its soldiers, the needs of the Army will continue to come before personal preferences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We do have options where a soldier can say, &#8216;Hey, I want to serve in Alaska,&#8217; and if we can meet those preferences, we will actually do that. But as far as, &#8216;I&#8217;m only going to serve in these states&#8217; or &#8216;I&#8217;m going to do that.\u2019 &#8230; It&#8217;s a contract,\u201d Gen. McConville said.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cYou could say, &#8216;I&#8217;d like to go to one of these places&#8217; and, if we can make it work, we&#8217;ll try to make it work for them.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Army\u2019s Chief of Staff, a soldier cannot refuse to serve in certain states.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/kamala-harris-national-baptist-convention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Kamala Harris promotes abortion to pastors at the National Baptist Convention<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gen. McConville\u2019s statements offer a direct refutation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2022\/05\/19\/soldiers-facing-discrimination-state-laws-could-request-transfers-under-draft-army-policy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an article on Military.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in May that had cited anonymous sources regarding a draft Army policy that would \u201cspecify that soldiers can request to move if they feel state or local laws discriminate against them based on gender, sex, religion, race or pregnancy.\u201d The draft guidance would have updated the criteria under which soldiers could be eligible for \u201ccompassionate reassignment,\u201d a long-standing policy that, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrc.army.mil\/content\/Enlisted%20Compassionate%20Actions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Army Human Resources Command<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is designed to address broadly-defined \u201cextreme family problems.\u201d The rumored guidance was to instruct commanders that they could use compassionate reassignment for soldiers facing discrimination at a particular duty station, including potential discrimination against a soldier\u2019s desire to have an abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May, Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Grinston\u2019s comments to the House Appropriations Committee seemed to indicate the service was making preparations to respond to the then-anticipated reversal of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;The answer is yes, we are drafting policies to ensure we take care of our soldiers in an appropriate way,&#8221; Grinston said, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2022\/05\/19\/soldiers-facing-discrimination-state-laws-could-request-transfers-under-draft-army-policy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Military.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;There are drafts if it were to be overturned, but that would be a decision for the secretary of the Army to decide the policy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked whether he had been pressured by Congress to change Army policy, Gen. McConville answered that he had not. \u201cAll I can say, as chief of staff of the Army, is we\u2019re just trying to take care of our soldiers and families,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The clarification of the Army\u2019s policy comes as the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced in early September that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/department-veterans-affairs-dependents-va-hospitals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will allow<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnant veterans or eligible dependents to get abortions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the cases of rape, incest, or if the health of the mother is in jeopardy. This brings the VA in line with active duty military policy which allows <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/pentagon-says-supreme-court-roe-ruling-wont-affect-abortions-military-rcna35578\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortions to be committed on base<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if a soldier has suffered rape, incest, or if her health is in danger.
