{"id":275956,"date":"2022-09-13T10:45:38","date_gmt":"2022-09-13T15:45:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=275956"},"modified":"2022-09-12T16:11:54","modified_gmt":"2022-09-12T21:11:54","slug":"canada-issues-booklet-assisted-suicide-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canada-issues-booklet-assisted-suicide-children\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada issues booklet explaining assisted suicide to children"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a disturbing example of propaganda directed at children, a new activity booklet published this year in Canada teaches impressionable young minds about assisted suicide, painting it in a positive and desirable light.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Published by Virtual Hospice Canada and partially funded by Canada\u2019s health ministry, the book is titled,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualhospice.ca\/maid\/media\/3bdlkrve\/maid-activity-book.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) Activity Book<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is available online. In the \u201cInformation for adults\u201d section, the book states its target audience is children ages 6-12 who have someone with a terminal illness in their life. Although it purports to give children tools and vocabulary for addressing this topic, the pro-euthanasia activity book clearly attempts to normalize euthanasia by describing how it works and making it seem a natural and innocuous medical procedure. The book also contains activities designed to ensure children thoroughly digest the book\u2019s rosy presentation of euthanasia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Canada legalized assisted suicide in 2016, the number of people who have taken their own lives under the law has risen steadily. As Live Action News reported, a whopping <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canada-deaths-suicide-increase\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.3% of all deaths<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2021 resulted from assisted suicide or euthanasia \u2013 approximately same percentage of people who die in the United States from diabetes and Alzheimer\u2019s disease. This represented a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canada-deaths-suicide-increase\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">32% increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the previous year. And while assisted suicide is presented as a last resort \u2013 one that ignores the potential for palliative care \u2013 Canadians have sought to end their own lives for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canadian-euthanized-hearing-loss\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hearing loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canada-assisted-suicide-covid-financial-strain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">financial strain from long COVID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canadian-man-assisted-suicide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical mismanagement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/woman-canada-euthanasia-access-medical-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of access to medical care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canadas-problems-assisted-suicide-continue-grow\/\">Canada\u2019s problems with assisted suicide only continue to grow<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the core themes in this children\u2019s euthanasia activity book include how being euthanized does not hurt (see claims to the contrary <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/disturbing-revelations-assisted-suicide-drowning\/\">here<\/a>), and that a person choosing to commit suicide does so after a long and well-thought-out process (see more on efforts to end waiting periods <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hurry-up-die-assisted-suicide-waiting-periods\/\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/california-assisted-suicide-waiting-period-48-hours\/\">here<\/a>). \u201cWhen someone decides to ask for MAiD, it is usually after thinking very carefully and having very hard feelings for a long time,\u201d the book explains. This kind of verbiage is especially dangerous when so few Canadians have access to palliative care and turn to euthanasia as their only option. Unsurprisingly, as Live Action News has reported, the rise in assisted suicide has had <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-report-negative-impacts-euthanasia-palliative-canada\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deleterious effects on palliative care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most concerningly, the book plants the idea that one can experience \u201ctoo much pain or suffering\u201d to live with; in other words, the idea of suicide \u2013 whether physician-assisted or otherwise \u2013 is presented as a valid or even praiseworthy way to escape suffering. According to one section, \u201cpeople might ask for MAiD if their illness or disability will not cause their body to die, but it causes too much pain or suffering for them to keep living with it, and there is no way to make the illness or disability get better or go away,\u201d and \u201cthe medicines [used in euthanasia] help them feel comfortable and peaceful.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As some on Twitter have pointed out, painting Canada\u2019s assisted suicide law in such a positive light to children is deeply problematic and will have unintended consequences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I understand the need to explain assisted suicide to children assisted suicide of a loved one. <br \/>However, kids who lose a parent or sibling to suicide can be deeply traumatised by the experience. In 2021, Canada\u2019s Parliament enacted a law to expand eligibility for assisted suicide to those who do not have a fatal or terminal condition. According to Canada\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/health-canada\/services\/medical-assistance-dying.html#a2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health ministry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the law will even allow individuals whose \u201conly medical condition is a mental illness\u201d by 2023.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p
