{"id":275663,"date":"2022-09-16T10:38:11","date_gmt":"2022-09-16T15:38:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=275663"},"modified":"2022-09-16T08:13:36","modified_gmt":"2022-09-16T13:13:36","slug":"report-abortions-common-exceptions-fraction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-abortions-common-exceptions-fraction\/","title":{"rendered":"REPORT: Abortions for most common &#8216;exceptions&#8217; remain a tiny fraction of total"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Abortion exceptions such as reasons of rape, incest, or life of the mother, make up a very small percentage of overall abortions, according to recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/fact-sheet-reasons-for-abortion\/#_edn5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data analyzed<\/a> by the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI). &#8220;Overall, common exceptions to abortion restrictions are estimated to account for less than 5% of all abortions,&#8221; CLI&#8217;s report, dated August 2022, states.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The most recent available data is from eight states that collect and report women\u2019s reasons for choosing abortion. These eight states account for approximately 122,000 abortions each year, 13% of the U.S. total,&#8221; CLI wrote. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/fact-sheet-reasons-for-abortion\/#_edn5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">August 2022 report<\/a> the data comes from Arizona (2021), Florida (2021), Louisiana (2020), Minnesota (2021), Nebraska (2020), Oklahoma (2021), South Dakota (2019), and Utah (2019).<\/p>\n<p>CLI&#8217;s report reveals that abortion &#8220;exceptions&#8221; are a small percentage of abortions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rape and incest: 0.3%<\/li>\n<li>Risk to the woman\u2019s life or a major bodily function: 0.2%<\/li>\n<li>Other physical health concerns: 2.5%<\/li>\n<li>Abnormality in the unborn baby: 1.3%<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elective and unspecified reasons: 95.7%<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Data\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fraction-abortions-rape-incest-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a>\u00a0analyzed by Live Action News showed similar results to CLI&#8217;s more recent findings. made up 70% of abortions in that state. It is important to note that women were able to list more than one reason for choosing to end the life of their preborn child.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_276158\" style=\"width: 1714px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-276158\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-276158\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Abortion-by-reason-Nebraska-S-Dakota-Utah.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion by reason Nebraska, S. Dakota, Utah<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Arizona abortions for 2021 have not been made publicly available, while Oklahoma&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/oklahoma.gov\/content\/dam\/ok\/en\/health\/health2\/aem-documents\/data-and-statistics\/center-for-health-statistics\/induces-termination-of-pregnancy\/2021%20AbortionReportRevised.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>\u00a0report revealed a long list of reasons given by women seeking abortion, including that the &#8220;baby would interfere with the education of the mother&#8221; and that the &#8220;partner wants the mother to have the abortion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pregnant mothers seeking abortion in Oklahoma also gave stated reasons, including that the mother&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>was not ready for a child.<\/li>\n<li>was a student or planning to be a student.<\/li>\n<li>had other children.<\/li>\n<li>could not afford the child.<\/li>\n<li>was unemployed.<\/li>\n<li>did not want to be a single mother.<\/li>\n<li>was unable or unwilling to get married.<\/li>\n<li>did not want people to know she had sex.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Minnesota, less than 1% of total reported abortions (10,136) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/data\/mchs\/pubs\/abrpt\/docs\/2021abrpt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>\u00a0were committed for rape (44) or incest (11), while 54% of abortions were committed because the mother &#8220;d[id] not want children at this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_276161\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-276161\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-276161\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Abortion-by-reason-Minnesota-2021.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Abortion by reason Minnesota 2021\" width=\"666\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Abortion-by-reason-Minnesota-2021.jpg 666w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Abortion-by-reason-Minnesota-2021-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Abortion-by-reason-Minnesota-2021-500x342.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 666px) 100vw, 666px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-276161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abortion by reason Minnesota 2021<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to the pro-abortion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/state-policy\/explore\/abortion-reporting-requirements\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guttmacher Institute<\/a>, as of August 1, 2022, just &#8220;16 states require providers to give some information about the patient&#8217;s reason for seeking the procedure.&#8221; The report also says just 10 states record abortions for reasons of the mother&#8217;s life or health, seven for rape or incest, 15 for health of the baby, and nine states include things like economic or social reasons.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Abortion exceptions such as reasons of rape, incest, or life of the mother, make up a very small percentage of overall abortions, according to recent\u00a0data analyzed by the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI). &#8220;Overall, common exceptions to abortion restrictions are estimated to account for less than 5% of all abortions,&#8221; CLI&#8217;s report, dated August 2022, states.
