The proposal was announced hours after Tennessee&#8217;s law protecting all preborn children from abortion <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/idaho-tennessee-texas-trigger-laws-effect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">went into effect<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Main Street Nashville <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainstreet-nashville.com\/news\/council-members-propose-500k-metro-fund-for-out-of-state-abortion-travel\/article_864516de-24c7-11ed-942f-a37c513c8d81.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports<\/a> that council members\u00a0Freddie O\u2019Connell and Delishia Porterfield announced the plan, along with\u00a0Sandra Sepulveda, Ginny Welsch, and Bob Mendes. Council member\u00a0Emily Benedict is also co-sponsoring the legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is forced birth day here in Tennessee,\u201d Porterfield said. \u201cAnd while it is a terrible day here in Tennessee \u2014 it\u2019s a day that has filled us with anger \u2014 we are not without hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The council members propose that a portion of the $500,000 will be used as a grant to Planned Parenthood, which offers hotel vouchers and gas cards to women seeking abortion. The funds would also be used to expand comprehensive sex education programs and for &#8220;safer sex supplies,&#8221; like condoms.<\/p>\n<p>Council members are proposing that the money come from the city&#8217;s already-approved budget, meaning that some funds would have to be reallocated. While he says it might be difficult to make this work, Mayor\u00a0John Cooper supports the proposal and says he will work to see where the money can come from.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/local\/davidson\/2022\/08\/25\/nashville-council-abortion-access-ban-roe-v-wade-sex-education\/7895774001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tennessean<\/a>, the city is even considering staffing cuts or delaying necessary projects in order to make it happen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-battlegrounds-city-councils-county-commissions\/\">The latest abortion battlegrounds: City councils and county commissions<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is not the first pro-abortion push from the city since the Supreme Court&#8217;s overturn of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>. In July, the council <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-battlegrounds-city-councils-county-commissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved<\/a> a resolution ensuring that the police will deprioritize investigations and arrests for abortion-related cases while also requesting that city funds and staff not be used to investigate potentially abortion-related cases. Cooper has also pushed for health insurance coverage for city employees who want to travel for abortion. The city even passed its own <a href=\"https:\/\/nashville.legistar.com\/LegislationDetail.aspx?ID=5711955&amp;GUID=FFA95C79-0930-48CB-AA94-54E000CAFF18&amp;Options=ID%7CText%7C&amp;Search=abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resolution<\/a> stating that it opposed the Supreme Court&#8217;s decision to overturn <em>Roe<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Nashville leaders appear willing to delay city projects, make staffing cuts, and spend hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars to ensure that its city&#8217;s preborn citizens don&#8217;t have a voice. &#8220;So many people are feeling hopeless in Nashville and in the state of Tennessee today,&#8221; Porterfield\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/news\/local\/davidson\/2022\/08\/25\/nashville-council-abortion-access-ban-roe-v-wade-sex-education\/7895774001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;We want Nashville to know that their local leaders take this seriously and we&#8217;re doing everything we can in tandem with any and every organization that wants to work with us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><i>\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/i><\/b><\/a><b><i>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nashville Metro council members have filed legislation that proposes creating a $500,000 fund for Metro residents to travel out of state for abortion.
