Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/companies-paying-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many companies in the U.S.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have rushed to signal their support for abortion, creating new benefits that include using company funds to pay for travel to states where employees can have abortions. Now, a recent Wall Street Journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-surprising-benefit-some-companies-are-taking-awayparental-leave-11661125605\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has found that many of these same companies are quietly and \u2013 as in the case of Disney subsidiary Hulu \u2013 dramatically scaling back on maternity and paternity leave benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the WSJ reports, a survey of 3,000 employers found that only 35% now offer paid maternity leave benefits beyond what is mandated by federal law, down from 53% in 2020. Among the companies dramatically trimming benefits is Hulu, a subsidiary of Disney, the once family-friendly company that has loudly voiced its support for abortion in the aftermath of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the WSJ report, Hulu cut its paid parental leave policy from 20 weeks down to just 8 weeks \u2013 a <em>60% reduction<\/em> \u2013 and its impact was immediately felt by one working family interviewed for the story. \u201cIf my job is cutting back on my parental leave, how am I going to afford child care if I don\u2019t get paid more?\u201d asked Devon Richey, a Texas-based Hulu employee.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Disney announced in June that it will cover the cost of employees traveling across state lines to procure an abortion. \u201cWe have communicated directly with our employees today that we recognize the impact of the ruling and that we remain committed to providing comprehensive access to quality and affordable care for all of our employees, cast members and their families, including family planning and reproductive care, no matter where they live,\u201d Disney said in a company statement, as reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/06\/24\/abortion-supreme-court-corporate-reaction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Washington Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision by Hulu and other companies to throw support behind abortion while drastically chopping parental leave benefits, casts doubt on their actual commitment to women\u2019s equality in the workplace.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/companies-paying-abortion\/\">These companies are covering abortion travel for their employees<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The gender disparity is no small matter, as over 1.5 million are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nearly-1-5-million-mothers-are-still-missing-from-the-workforce-11619472229\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">missing from the workplace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the COVID-19 pandemic created a childcare shortage that caused many working parents \u2013 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/05\/17\/upshot\/women-workforce-employment-covid.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mothers, especially<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 to leave their careers to care for children at home, as childcare is one of the greatest costs families face. It also is symptomatic of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/06\/15\/business\/pregnancy-discrimination.html?mtrref=www.liveaction.org&amp;gwh=B46CBAE8181E078FE42C6EE484C7A960&amp;gwt=pay&amp;assetType=PAYWALL\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">systematic discrimination against pregnant women in the workforce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who are frequently sidelined and unjustly fired. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By coming out so enthusiastically in support of abortion while cutting back on parental leave benefits, companies are sending a not-so-subtle signal to women who want to start a family, and places on them a higher financial burden from the start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While supporters of such policies call it reproductive \u201cjustice,\u201d the fact is that abortion benefits are not wholly altruistic, despite these companies\u2019 messaging campaigns. As Live Action News\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/corporate-misogyny-ceos-banning-abortion-bad-business\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2019, nearly 200 CEOs took out a full page ad in the New York Times to declare that banning abortion is bad for business, an unusually candid view into business leaders\u2019 true motivations. As the market forces have shown, it is far less expensive to pay for and facilitate abortions than it is to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-paid-family-leave-save-lives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world-class maternity leave policies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this, some employers, like one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-employers-childbirth-adoption-childcare\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas-based insurance company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have shown that good business can still benefit by implementing authentically pro-women and pro-family policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since the overturning of Roe v.
