She weighed only 558 grams at birth, \u201cless than a homemade sponge cake\u201d. Her parents, Jasmine and Troy Tobias,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.northnorfolknews.co.uk\/news\/health\/isla-tobias-nicu-norwich-hospital-9143832\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were advised<\/a>\u00a0to \u201ctake each day as it comes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>When little Isla was just three weeks old, she had to undergo a major operation due to a gut and bowel perforation. Her parents were told that she had about a 10 percent chance of survival.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI remember thinking, \u2018I haven\u2019t even held my baby yet\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Isla\u2019s operation took two hours \u2013 two extremely long hours for the parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will never forget that journey, going down to the operating theatre. I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever held Troy\u2019s hand so tight. It felt like the longest walk ever\u201d, Jasmine recalls.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-toppled-roe-ready-hard-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The women who helped to topple Roe v. Wade: \u2018We\u2019re ready for the hard work to begin\u2019<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When they were called back to the NICU, the surgeon took them to a side room. He then informed the anxious parents that Isla had pulled through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember looking up at him thinking, \u2018Please say something\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe just looked at us, he pulled off his face mask and said, \u2018I\u2019m so pleased to tell you your little girl has made it\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went from feeling so tense to such relief.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Isla was taken off the ventilator two weeks later. She spent the first five months of her life in an incubator at the hospital\u2019s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. She has since recovered completely and is now about to celebrate her second birthday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo look at her now, she\u2019s doing amazing. She\u2019s so cheeky, so funny, so happy\u201d, says her mother.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the couple raised \u00a32500 for the unit that saved their daughter\u2019s life. This year, Troy, who has never boxed before, took part in a white-collar boxing event to help raise more funds.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/fundraising\/TTsboxingmatch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The bout<\/a>\u00a0took place on 23rd July at Epic Studios in Norwich.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Survival rates for extremely premature babies are improving all the time<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortion is available up to 24 weeks in the UK. However, the outcomes for premature babies with medical complications like Isla are improving all the time.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, John Wyatt, Professor of Ethics and Perinatology at University College London and also Emeritus Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics, Ethics &amp; Perinatology at University College London,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/parliamentarians-hear-from-expert-about-why-abortion-time-limits-should-be-lowered-in-line-with-the-latest-scientific-evidence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presented evidence<\/a>\u00a0to parliamentarians from the UK and across the world showing \u201cthat there has been a steady improvement in the chances of survival of babies born at 22 and 23 weeks gestation since the Abortion Act was last amended [in 1990]\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson Catherine Robinson said: \u201cThe prospects for premature babies are improving all the time. Even babies like Isla with medical complications are able to survive and thrive, thanks to advances in science and the work of neonatal care units like the one in which Isla was treated.
