Bullying pregnancy resource centers<\/span><\/a> has become something of a national pro-abortion sport since the overturn of Roe v. Wade<\/em>. While crowd-sourced review company Yelp <\/span>entered the fray<\/span><\/a> years ago, it recently announced that it’s ratcheting up its partisan attacks by deliberately flagging all pregnancy resource center listings with a consumer notice warning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On August 23, Yelp issued a <\/span>press release<\/span><\/a> reading, in part:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

[T]<\/span>oday, we\u2019re introducing a new notification on Yelp business pages for Crisis Pregnancy Centers and Faith-based Crisis Pregnancy Centers that informs consumers these businesses typically offer limited medical services. In addition, we\u2019re expanding our manual recategorization effort for those businesses.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Yelp fails to point out that, as <\/span>previously noted<\/span><\/a> by Live Action News, \u201ca<\/span>bortion facilities are not required to refer women to adoption agencies, PRCs, or advertise which services <\/span>they<\/span><\/i> don\u2019t provide.\u201d And while Yelp finds fault with PRCs for providing \u201climited medical services,\u201d in fact PRCS offer the specific medical services like ultrasounds and STI testing that make sense for their specific clientele. Increasingly, PRCs <\/span>are<\/span><\/i> opting for medical licensure and offering prenatal care, and many <\/span>pro-life, pro-women\u2019s health centers<\/span><\/a> are offering <\/span>full spectrum healthcare<\/span><\/a> across the female reproductive lifespan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In response to Yelp\u2019s announcement, Susan B. Anthony List\u2019s Marjorie Dannenfelser <\/span>commented<\/span><\/a>, \u201c<\/span> Discriminatory labels are not meant to inform, but to scare women away from receiving the support and resources they need. America\u2019s pregnancy centers exist to serve women and families, taking financial pressures and other types of coercion out of the equation\u2026. If Big Tech\u2019s labels were truthful, they\u2019d highlight all the real services pregnancy centers provide that Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry don\u2019t, such as diapers, formula, clothing, strollers, parenting and childbirth classes, education and career help, and much more \u2013 typically free of charge.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yelp: Full-throated abortion advocacy since 2018<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yelp is unapologetic and transparent about its abortion advocacy, noting \u201cYelp has a consistent <\/span>track record<\/span><\/a> of supporting access to reproductive healthcare for our <\/span>employees<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>underserved communities<\/span><\/a> and our users.\u201d Its similarly straightforward about its concerted targeting of pregnancy resource center listings, claiming, \u201cSince 2018, Yelp\u2019s moderators have manually evaluated tens of thousands of business listings and <\/span>recategorized businesses<\/span><\/a> that do not offer actual abortion services as either Crisis Pregnancy Centers or Faith-based Crisis Pregnancy Centers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the press release read, \u201cOur moderators conduct thorough investigations by scouring businesses\u2019 websites, social media pages, \u2018About the Business\u2019 information contributed to Yelp by the businesses themselves, Yelp reviews from consumers, and more.\u201d Yelp further boasted, \u201cin 2022 alone, we have proactively evaluated nearly 33,500 U.S. business pages and recategorized nearly 470 business pages as Crisis Pregnancy Centers or Faith-based Crisis Pregnancy Centers (as of August 8, 2022).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with Axios, Yelp\u2019s VP of user operations Noorie Malik called \u201cunjust\u201d pregnancy resource centers\u2019 efforts to share the truth about the reality of abortion and to educate women on the existence of resources and support to parent or make an adoption plan. Malik stated,\u201c<\/span>“After learning about the misleading nature of crisis pregnancy centers back in 2018, I\u2019m grateful Yelp stands behind these efforts to provide consumers with access to reliable information about reproductive health services.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Proof\u2019 of PRCs\u2019 scientific misinformation was provided by abortion supporters<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yelp frames its actions as a simple matter of \u201cbetter matching [viewers] with reproductive health services that actually offer abortions when they are searching for abortion services and making it less likely they will see crisis pregnancy centers that don\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But it later strays from its \u2018just the facts, ma\u2019am\u2019 approach, asserting, \u201cIt\u2019s <\/span>well-reported<\/span><\/a> that crisis pregnancy centers do not offer abortion services, and it\u2019s been shown that many provide <\/span>misleading information<\/span><\/a> in an attempt to steer people seeking abortion care to other options.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>link<\/span><\/a> purporting to show that pregnancy resource centers offer misleading information is a 2019 editorial in the Journal of General Internal Medicine <\/span>co-authored<\/span><\/a> by an openly pro-abortion professor at the <\/span>University of Pittsburgh<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(which has come under fire for alleged<\/span> illegal fetal tissue research<\/span><\/a>), a <\/span>senior attorney<\/span><\/a> for the Women\u2019s Law Project who received a national award from the National Abortion Federation, and a University of California-San Francisco<\/span> researcher<\/span><\/a> who <\/span>believes that<\/span><\/a> family medicine doctors have a \u201cresponsibility\u201d to provide the abortion pill. The 2019 editorial trots out the same tired old tropes that abortion supporters have used for years about PRCs\u2019 <\/span>supposed deceptive scientific misinformation<\/span><\/a>, insisting that any connections between abortion and <\/span>breast cancer<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>miscarriage risk<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>mental health risks<\/span><\/a>, and possible <\/span>future infertility<\/span><\/a> \u201c<\/span>have been discredited by research.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

READ:\u00a0Yelp uses heavily biased sources to support its targeting of pregnancy resource centers<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Where are the consumer notices for dangerous abortion facilities?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Would that Yelp\u2019s self-proclaimed commitment to the \u201ctrust and safety of our community\u201d and its \u201cefforts to protect our users and provide them with access to the information they\u2019re looking for\u201d extended to the <\/span>women injured<\/span><\/a> by botched abortions. <\/span><\/p>\n

Certainly, women would be well served by a consumer notice identifying abortion businesses that have had 911 calls placed for patient injuries (verifiable through Freedom of Information Act requests), failed their health and safety inspections, and\/or <\/span>operate without licenses<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

In its crusade against misinformation, Yelp fails to acknowledge the documented misinformation provided to patient <\/span>by abortion providers<\/span><\/i>, such as New York abortion facility <\/span>Early Options<\/span><\/a>, which\u00a0actually tells<\/span><\/a> women that an induced abortion \u201cbrings down a missed period.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pregnancy resource centers continually subjected to physical and verbal attacks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Physical acts of <\/span>vandalism<\/span><\/a>\u00a0including<\/span> arson<\/span><\/a>\u00a0have been\u00a0occurring across the country, yet have largely been met with predictable silence from politicians and the media who <\/span>conveniently ignore<\/span><\/a> the <\/span>hundreds of millions of dollars<\/span><\/a> in material items like diapers and cribs, housing assistance and other support given free of charge each year by pregnancy resource centers to moms in crisis. <\/span><\/p>\n

Such hypocrisy is difficult to understand given that pro-lifers are routinely accused of failing to help women and told that <\/span>they need to do more<\/span><\/a> if they want abortion to be illegal and unthinkable. <\/span><\/p>\n

Yet lawmakers and pundits decry the very pregnancy resource centers offering the tangible assistance that pro-lifers are supposedly responsible for providing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yelp is one company among many censoring the pro-life perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yelp\u2019s policy change comes on the heels of Google employees sending a <\/span>demand letter<\/span><\/a> to executives calling for the immediate removal of \u201cmisleading search results related to abortion services by removing results for fake abortion providers,\u201d presumably referring to pregnancy resource center listings, even though such centers do not claim to provide abortions on their websites.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On August 4, Live Action News <\/span>reported<\/span><\/a> that Live Action founder Lila Rose\u2019s TikTok account had been blocked, and Live Action had been banned from advertising on the platform. TikTok\u2019s bans are just the latest online censorship against Live Action, following<\/span> previous actions<\/span><\/a> by Facebook (now Meta), Pinterest, Twitter, and YouTube.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
