On August 23, 2022, Noorie Malik, Yelp’s\u00a0VP of User Operations, announced<\/a> Yelp’s decision to slap warning labels on pro-life pregnancy centers (PRCs) online, claiming that PRCs are “misleading.” The move follows Yelp’s longtime public support for abortion and its recent\u00a0decision<\/a> to pay for employees’ abortion-related travel expenses. Yelp appears to at least partially have based its decision on an article published in 2018 in a pro-abortion journal. Though the authors claim to have no conflict of interest<\/a>, each is involved with the abortion industry \u2014 none are impartial reviewers.<\/p>\n

This move calls into question whether Yelp is acting at the urging of abortion industry power brokers, who have been vigorously attempting to censor and shut down all options for women except those which wholeheartedly endorse abortion on demand for any reason. In addition, this isn’t the first time<\/a> that Yelp has tried to label pregnancy resource centers in such a way as to disparage their services.<\/p>\n

“Since 2018, Yelp\u2019s moderators have manually evaluated tens of thousands of business listings and\u00a0recategorized businesses<\/a>\u00a0that do not offer actual abortion services as either Crisis Pregnancy Centers or Faith-based Crisis Pregnancy Centers. Our moderators conduct thorough investigations by scouring businesses\u2019 websites, social media pages, ‘About the Business’ information contributed to Yelp by the businesses themselves, Yelp reviews from consumers, and more.\u00a0We\u2019ve continued to regularly audit and investigate these businesses… and recategorized nearly 470 business pages as Crisis Pregnancy Centers or Faith-based Crisis Pregnancy Centers (as of August 8, 2022),”\u00a0Malik wrote on behalf of Yelp.<\/p>\n

But rather than disclose the results of their alleged “investigations,” Yelp instead linked to an article<\/a> entitled, “Crisis Pregnancy Centers: Faith Centers Operating in Bad Faith,” as support for the idea that PRCs are “misleading.”<\/p>\n

“While CPCs have a right to exist and can provide valued emotional, spiritual, and material (e.g., diapers and formula) support for some women, they often engage in practices that are dubious at best and unethical at worst,” the authors of that article claimed.<\/p>\n

The article was published<\/a> by\u00a0the\u00a0Journal of General Internal Medicine, the official journal<\/a> of the Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM). Online, SGIM\u00a0claims<\/a> to be\u00a0a “member-based internal medical association of over 3,300 of the world\u2019s leading academic general internists, who are dedicated to improving the access to care for all populations…”<\/p>\n

The organization<\/a> also supports<\/a> abortion and recently\u00a0reaffirmed its support for the radical Women’s Health Protection Act<\/a>. In a 2021 letter<\/a>, SGIM\u00a0acknowledged that they opposed all abortion restrictions. SGIM also joined an amicus brief<\/a> in favor of abortion in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization<\/em> Supreme Court case, which led to the overturning of Roe v. Wade<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Article authors claim no conflicts of interest, but pro-abortion bias is clear<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Author Christine Dehlendorf: Abortionist and abortionist trainer<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the authors in the article linked by Yelp is\u00a0Christine Dehlendorf<\/a><\/strong>, an abortionist who also trains medical professionals in abortion procedures. By her own admission<\/a>, Dehlendorf provides “family planning care including abortions both at the Women’s Options Center at San Francisco General and at Planned Parenthood,” where she also purports to “train<\/a> our family and community medicine residents in abortion care.”<\/p>\n

Dehlendorf\u00a0is also the director<\/a> of the\u00a0Person-Centered Reproductive Health Program<\/a>\u00a0at the Bixby Center<\/a>, a known abortion training organization. Just last month,\u00a0Dehlendorf<\/a>\u00a0wrote<\/a> an op-ed where she again acknowledged that she provides abortions, adding, “My colleagues and I in family medicine have a particular role to play in this fight \u2014 to work to ensure patients have the option to receive this care as part of an ongoing relationship with a trusted provider.”<\/p>\n

Abortionist Christine Dehlendorf<\/p><\/div>\n

Author Sonya Borrero: Professor and member of Society of Family Planning<\/strong><\/p>\n

A second author of the article linked by Yelp is\u00a0Sonya Borrero<\/a>, M.D., who is on the Board of Trustees<\/a> of the Women’s Law Project and is a former<\/a> Secretary of the Board of Directors and current\u00a0member<\/a> of the Society of Family Planning (SFP<\/a>), where she was\u00a0awarded<\/a> SFP’s Beacon of Science Award<\/a> in 2020. SFP is heavily funded<\/a> by the Packard and Buffett Foundations<\/a>, original investors in abortion pill manufacturer Danco Laboratories.<\/p>\n

Notably, SFP recently\u00a0granted funds<\/a> for a study that gave gift cards<\/a>\u00a0to recruited abortion patients who claim to have visited what they “believed” to be pro-life pregnancy centers prior to their abortions.\u00a0SFP also provided funding in 2019 to conduct<\/a> a “national mystery caller study” of pregnancy resource centers, where callers posed<\/a> as a “simulated patient.”<\/p>\n

Author Susan Frietsche: ACLU attorney for abortion facilities<\/strong><\/p>\n

The third author is\u00a0Susan Frietsche<\/a>, an ACLU attorney who provides legal services for abortion facilities as well as abortion clients. According to her bio<\/a> at the\u00a0Women’s Law Project (WLP<\/a>),\u00a0Frietsche\u00a0is a “Senior Staff Attorney and the founder and director of the Western Pennsylvania Office of the Women\u2019s Law Project, where she has worked since 1992.\u00a0Her law practice focuses on providing legal services for the 17 freestanding abortion facilities in Pennsylvania…”<\/p>\n

Her bio goes on to state, “Frietsche has appeared as counsel for young women seeking confidential abortions in over 50 judicial bypass cases…”<\/p>\n

It also states that “She is a member of the adjunct faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, where she teaches Reproductive Law and Policy and Gender and the Law. Prior to joining the staff of the Women\u2019s Law Project, Frietsche was the Deputy Director of the Pennsylvania ACLU and the organization\u2019s state lobbyist.”<\/p>\n

The Women’s Law Project, which does not disclose<\/a> two of their largest donors, is behind<\/a> a brief<\/a> published in collaboration with another pro-abortion group called The Alliance. The report, originally released in 2021, falsely\u00a0attacks<\/a> pro-life pregnancy centers and was also authored<\/a> by extremely biased abortion advocates.<\/p>\n

Responding to Yelp’s announcement, Andrea Trudden,\u00a0Vice President of Communications & Marketing at Heartbeat International,\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0the National Catholic Register (NCR) that\u00a0for the sake of full transparency, Yelp needs to disclose where they obtained the list of pregnancy help organizations.<\/p>\n

A group known as\u00a0Abortion Access Front<\/a>\u00a0has collaborated with multiple pro-abortion groups like Physicians for Reproductive Health (PRH), the National Abortion Federation (NAF), the Abortion Care Network (ACN), and abortion chain Whole Woman’s Health (WWH) to publish the\u00a0website<\/a>\u00a0“ExposeFakeClinics.com,” which lists location information for PRCs.<\/p>\n

Abortion Access Front has previously\u00a0tweeted<\/a> to supporters (multiple times<\/a>) that they should leave false\u00a0Yelp reviews<\/a> about PRCs and even recently published an activity guide<\/a> suggesting supporters “upvote” these reviews.<\/p>\n

Just a month ago, Yelp had to alert users to “unusual activity” on PRC listings<\/a> because of pro-abortion efforts to leave false reviews about the pregnancy centers.<\/p>\n

“We are witnessing a full-scale attack against any person and\/or foundation that seeks to support alternatives to abortion,” Heartbeat International’s Andrea Trudden\u00a0previously<\/a> told Live Action News. “Every woman deserves compassion and care when facing an unexpected pregnancy and that is exactly what pregnancy help organizations provide day in and day out. Showing support for pregnant women in need is the right thing to do.”<\/p>\n
