{"id":274408,"date":"2022-08-18T10:38:29","date_gmt":"2022-08-18T15:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=274408"},"modified":"2022-08-25T17:25:41","modified_gmt":"2022-08-25T22:25:41","slug":"maya-hawke-gratitude-siblings-abortion-death-unsettling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/maya-hawke-gratitude-siblings-abortion-death-unsettling\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Maya Hawke&#8217;s gratitude for a sibling&#8217;s death by abortion is unsettling"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Actress Maya Hawke of &#8220;Stranger Things&#8221; fame, daughter of actress Uma Thurman and actor Ethan Hawke, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/06\/30\/maya-hawke-i-wouldnt-exist-if-uma-thurman-didnt-get-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Jimmy Fallon<\/a> on The Tonight Show in July that if it weren&#8217;t for her mother&#8217;s previous <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uma-thurman-sexual-assault-abortion-tragic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion<\/a>, &#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t exist.&#8221; It&#8217;s a sentiment that, once examined, exposes the true horror of what an abortion is and how callous it is to celebrate it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom wrote this really beautiful essay about her abortion that she got when she was really young, and about how if she hadn\u2019t had it, she wouldn\u2019t have become the person that she\u2019d become, and I wouldn\u2019t exist, and how both of my parents&#8217; lives would\u2019ve been totally derailed if she hadn\u2019t had access to safe and legal health care \u2014 fundamental health care,&#8221; explained Hawke, after discussing that Fallon had held her when she was a baby.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Por1MeYwKlU\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But Hawke&#8217;s mother, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uma-thurman-sexual-assault-abortion-tragic\/\">when she spoke of her own abortion<\/a>, painted it as something she didn&#8217;t truly want. Having been raped at age 16 by a man 20 years her senior, Thurman said, &#8220;I wanted to keep the baby, but how?&#8221; When she called home for help, her parents did not encourage her toward motherhood.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My childish fantasy of motherhood was soundly corrected as I weighed answers to their very precise questions,&#8221; Thurman wrote in the Washington Post. &#8220;I was just starting out in my career and didn\u2019t have the means to provide a stable home, even for myself. We decided as a family that I couldn\u2019t go through with the pregnancy, and agreed that termination was the right choice. My heart was broken nonetheless.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Hawke isn&#8217;t the first <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-activist-sibling-abortion-mother\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">person<\/a> \u2014 or celebrity \u2014 to express a level of gratitude that her sibling was killed in an abortion. Actor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/an-open-letter-to-avengers-actor-mark-ruffalo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Ruffalo<\/a> has been publicly celebrating his mother&#8217;s abortion for nearly a decade.<\/p>\n<p>Each time a person shows gratitude for a sibling&#8217;s death by abortion, they are justifying a deliberate act of killing (homicide) that occurred in that abortion because it allowed<em> them <\/em>to be born, or it is believed to have helped that person&#8217;s mother in a difficult situation.<\/p>\n<p>Reframed, these celebratory sentiments take on an entirely different (and horrifying) form.<\/p>\n<p>Replace &#8216;abortion&#8217; with &#8216;cancer&#8217; or &#8216;a car accident&#8217; and imagine a person publicly saying they are grateful their older sibling died because it was the catalyst for their eventual existence, or that it allowed their parents to focus all of their money and attention on them rather than on the child who had died.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/an-open-letter-to-avengers-actor-mark-ruffalo\/\">An open letter to \u2018Avengers\u2019 actor Mark Ruffalo: Legal or illegal, abortion destroys<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s odd and shocking to imagine anyone saying they are grateful their sibling tragically died because it meant they could live&#8230; or live differently. Whether or not Hawke or Ruffalo would have ever been conceived had their siblings not been aborted does not justify the brutal act of abortion \u2014 the homicide of an undelivered child \u2014 that was carried out against that child.<\/p>\n<p>Killing one child is not somehow justified because another child was eventually born into that family.<\/p>\n<p>Countless surviving siblings of children lost to abortion\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-affects-sibling-survivors-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have expressed<\/a>\u00a0the deep pain they felt when they learned a sibling had died by their mother&#8217;s choice. These individuals feel survivor&#8217;s guilt, grief, and a longing to have known their sibling. One survivor sibling wrote, &#8220;Suddenly I found myself thinking about my little brother! I became disoriented and lost control of the car for a moment as I burst into tears having lost him. I was astounded by my reaction, but I couldn\u2019t shake the sadness and longing to have known him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It must be difficult to learn that your mother had an abortion prior to her pregnancy with you and that if she hadn&#8217;t had that abortion, you might not have ever existed. It must be difficult to fully realize that <em>one<\/em> person held that kind of power over your life \u2014 that your mother, the first person you ever bonded with \u2014 could have just as easily made the decision to kill you at your most vulnerable, had the circumstances in her life been slightly different when you were conceived. It must be difficult to realize that if your sibling hadn&#8217;t died by abortion, you might not have ever been conceived.<\/p>\n<p>But if individuals like Hawke and Ruffalo ever allow their minds to delve deeply into the idea that they have a dead sibling, or what&#8217;s really happening during an abortion, they would learn that what&#8217;s really happening isn&#8217;t &#8220;fundamental health care&#8221; but\u00a0the intentional killing of innocent children for another person&#8217;s perceived benefit. While the desire to defend one&#8217;s own deeply-loved mother is understandable, excusing the act of killing doesn&#8217;t bring healing to anyone.<\/p>\n<p>Without the right to life, there can be no other rights. &#8220;Becoming the person you are&#8221;
