The federal funds, earmarked for treating sexually transmitted infections, cancer screenings, and contraception, were denied for the fourth time since September 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Hampshire and Massachusetts are the only remaining states to still have an elected Governor&#8217;s Council or Executive Council. This council, popular during colonial times, has the power to approve or reject pardons, state contracts, and appointments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newhampshirebulletin.com\/2022\/07\/27\/council-hands-sununu-health-care-providers-fourth-defeat-on-family-planning-contracts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New Hampshire Bulletin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, who disagrees with the Council\u2019s decision, said, \u201cI keep bringing (the contracts) back \u2026 but I think they\u2019ve made it pretty clear that regardless of timing, regardless of what we put in there, regardless of the explanations that we give and the understanding that we\u2019ve kind of pushed upon them, they\u2019re not really willing to move on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The denied contracts totaled a million dollars for the three abortion facilities, with more than $300,000 designated for Planned Parenthood. Councilors Janet Stevens, David Wheeler, Ted Gatsas, and Joe Kenney voted down the contracts. They have previously refused to give federal money to facilities that offer abortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/philadelphia-poor-women-abortions-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Philadelphia dumps $500,000 into abortion fund for poor women<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmur.com\/article\/new-hampshire-executive-council-again-rejects-funds-for-sti-cancer-screenings-at-abortion-providers\/40735171\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claims<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> federal funding it receives does not go toward abortion and says that by denying funds for contraception, STI treatment, and cancer screenings, councilors are causing harm to the 17 million women living in the state. However, according to a 2021 report, only <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/3-women-reproductive-age-planned-parenthood\/\">3.3% of women of childbearing age<\/a> visit Planned Parenthood for services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite Planned Parenthood&#8217;s claim, contracts were approved for four other providers that offer low-cost healthcare to the women of New Hampshire, including Coos County Family Health Services in Berlin, Lamprey Health Care in Newmarket, Amoskeag Health in Manchester, and CAP Belknap-Merrimack in Laconia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dave Wheeler, an Executive Councilor, disputed Planned Parenthood&#8217;s claim that funding funneled to abortion providers wouldn&#8217;t be used for abortion.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;(The) facilities that wanted this money did not meet the statutory requirements of proving that there would no mingling of the funds with the abortion business that they are in,\u201d Wheeler <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmur.com\/article\/new-hampshire-executive-council-again-rejects-funds-for-sti-cancer-screenings-at-abortion-providers\/40735171\">said<\/a>. &#8220;I don&#8217;t buy the fact that the money is not commingled by the abortion providers, Planned Parenthood, Lovering and \u2013 I certainly believe that it does subsidize the abortion industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Catholic Action League of Massachusetts\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/008edd5bcf64\/catholic-action-league-news-update-new-hampshire-executive-council-votes-to-defund-planned-parenthood?e=7f141f5f99\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the Executive Council vote &#8220;an incremental, but significant victory in the struggle to defend the sanctity of innocent human life in the Granite State.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Director C.J. Doyle of the Catholic Action League said, &#8220;Any day that taxpayers are liberated from the yoke of subsidizing Planned Parenthood is a good day for life, freedom, and moral sanity.
