Maybe she called you \u201cRobert\u201d instead of \u201cBobby,\u201d or \u201cJonathan\u201d instead of \u201cJohn.\u201d No matter what you did, your teacher never seemed to get the message.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s exactly how I feel in response to the mainstream media, which consistently fails to label our movement correctly. However, in this case, there\u2019s more at stake than simply a clever nickname. Our movement is in danger of being seriously misunderstood.<\/p>\n<p>Below, I have sampled some headlines from leading news sources related to pro-life issues:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/50592679\/ns\/us_news\/t\/anti-abortion-marchers-washington-protest-yrs-legal-abortion\/%23.UR1lBaW0JII\">Anti-abortion marchers in Washington protest 40 years of legal abortion<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/50520833\/ns\/world_news-europe\/t\/thousands-irish-attend-anti-abortion-protest\/%23.UR1lYaW0JII\">Thousands of Irish attend anti-abortion protest<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com\/2013\/01\/07\/anti-abortion-group-loses-appeal-over-pac-status\/?iref=allsearch\">Anti-abortion group loses appeal over PAC status<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com\/2012\/08\/22\/anti-abortion-movement-stands-by-no-exceptions-orthodoxy-amid-controversy\/?iref=allsearch\">Anti-abortion movement stands by \u2018no exceptions\u2019 orthodoxy amid controversy<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/8301-202_162-57565826\/pope-tweets-shout-out-for-anti-abortion-rally-in-d.c\/\">Pope tweets shout-out for anti-abortion rally in D.C.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/8301-207_162-57564828\/justin-biebers-mom-produces-anti-abortion-short-film\/\">Justin Bieber\u2019s mom produces anti-abortion short film<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It seems that, time and time again, the media refers to our movement as \u201canti-abortion\u201d rather than \u201cpro-life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The examples above are only a handful of the multiple instances that could be cited. That\u2019s not to say that the media <i>never<\/i> uses the term \u201cpro-life.\u201d But there does seem to be a strong preference for citing pro-life protests and activism as \u201canti-abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hasten to say that, in one sense, we are most certainly \u201canti-abortion.\u201d We believe that abortion involves the deliberate killing of innocent human beings. It\u2019s not as if there\u2019s any shame in being <i>against<\/i> abortion.<\/p>\n<p>However, a media portrayal that consistently depicts what we\u2019re against rather than what we\u2019re for is incredibly misleading. Are Protestants \u201canti-Catholics\u201d? Are Democrats \u201canti-Republicans\u201d? Are conservatives \u201canti-liberals\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Just as a Protestant\u2019s theology consists of more than his disagreements with Catholic theology and just as a Democrat\u2019s ideology consists of more than his disagreements with Republican ideology, so a pro-lifer\u2019s position consists of more than his disagreements with NARAL Pro-Choice America or Planned Parenthood.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, I would like to provide some observations as to why we are pro-life, not just anti-abortion:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. We promote a positive agenda, not just a negative agenda.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is certainly true that, in order to be <i>for<\/i> something, you have to be <i>against<\/i> something else. Even if you\u2019re <i>for<\/i> love and happiness, you have to be <i>against<\/i> hate and bitterness.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, if we\u2019re <i>pro<\/i>-life, we are <i>against<\/i> that which causes the destruction of innocent life.<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s a serious misnomer to assume that all we\u2019re looking for is more red tape. We\u2019re not just looking to make abortion illegal (as great as that would be); we\u2019re looking to promote a culture of life and peace.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-abortion crowd will respond, \u201cYou just want to ruin women\u2019s lives by making them give birth to children when they\u2019re not ready yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In actuality, we\u2019re not out to ruin <i>anyone\u2019s<\/i> life. We\u2019re out to <i>save<\/i> the lives of those who are too weak and vulnerable to save themselves. We\u2019re out to protect women from the shame and guilt of terminating a child\u2019s life.<\/p>\n<p>A police officer doesn\u2019t just arrest criminals; he makes our streets safer. A firefighter doesn\u2019t just eliminate fires; he rescues people from the flames. There\u2019s a negative aspect to any noble line of work, but there\u2019s also a positive reason why those negative actions must be taken.<\/p>\n<p>And though we have much to oppose as pro-life people, we also have many things to support. We support helping women through crisis pregnancies, not hastily rushing them into abortions. We support loving and caring for children, not brutally murdering them because they cause an inconvenience to one\u2019s lifestyle. We support adoption, education, and counseling as healthy alternatives to abortion and deceit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Our message involves more than abortion.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortion is not the only means of terminating life. There are other ways that human life is devalued, under-emphasized, and even extinguished in our world.<\/p>\n<p>To say that we\u2019re anti-abortion is to focus on only one part of our message. The truth is that we\u2019re against murder in <i>any<\/i> form. We\u2019re against the selfish actions of Christopher Dorner, Adam Lanza, James Holmes, and other cold-blooded killers who shamelessly terminate innocent human life. We\u2019re also against euthanasia, suicide (assisted or otherwise), terrorism, cloning, extreme poverty, unjust war, human trafficking, and anything else that threatens the sanctity of human life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. We use positive means to advance our message, not negative ones.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I have previously <a href=\"\/news\/four-reasons-why-violence-will-never-advance-the-pro-life-cause\/\">pointed out<\/a>, there are so-called \u201cpro-life\u201d individuals who advance their message through bombs and guns. These individuals are not really <i>for<\/i> life at all, but against it.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to what pro-abortion forces would like you to believe, these folks are in the extreme minority. The average pro-life citizen is a decent, peace-loving American who would never resort to violent tactics to advance his message.<\/p>\n<p>What are the weapons of the pro-lifer\u2019s warfare? They include prayer, candlelight vigils, crisis counseling, ultrasounds, peaceful protest, and adoption. None of these weapons <i>hurt<\/i> anyone; the only harm they cause is angst and frustration on the part of the pro-abortion crowd.<\/p>\n<p><b>Conclusion: Turning the Tables<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The media refers to us as \u201canti-abortion.\u201d But you\u2019ve never seen the media refer to NARAL Pro-Choice America or Planned Parenthood as \u201canti-life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These organizations have attempted to gain widespread appeal by describing themselves as \u201cpro-choice.\u201d After all, everyone likes being able to choose.<\/p>\n<p>What we don\u2019t like is <i>death<\/i>. And, unfortunately, the agenda of so-called \u201cpro-choice\u201d organizations promotes just that.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever else we have the right to choose, the termination of an innocent human life doesn&#8217;t fall into that category. As pro-lifers, we\u2019re for healthy, life-giving choices, but we are against unhealthy, life-destroying choices.<\/p>\n<p>I challenge the media to look at what we\u2019re for, not just what we\u2019re against. But I also challenge them to look at what the pro-choice crowd is <i>against<\/i>, not just what they\u2019re for. They might be <i>for<\/i> choice, but they\u2019re <i>against<\/i> life.<\/p>\n<p>And if you insist on calling us \u201canti-abortion,\u201d at least be consistent and call your pro-choice friends \u201canti-life.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What we don\u2019t like is <em>death<\/em>.
