While this idea is not new \u2014 nor is it logical or sound \u2014\u00a0it seems to be gaining popularity among some who profess some sort of religious or Christian belief.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stacey Abrams: Abortion is like miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy, and &#8216;free will&#8217; trumps all else<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams sat down for an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/stacey-abrams-says-her-faith-in-god-guides-her-pro-choice-stance-184213893.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yahoo! News<\/a> last week in response to the fall of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, which has led to the enactment of legal protections for the preborn in Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the reversal of\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, millions of women across the country lost reproductive rights,\u201d Marquise Francis of Yahoo! News said to Abrams. \u201cI know you have been a staunch advocate for reproductive rights. I also know your faith and you\u2019re very vocal about Christianity. So what would you say to people who kind of have a hard time being pro-abortion but also Christian?&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Democrat Stacey Abrams claims abortion until birth is right because of &quot;the free will that the God I believe in gave us.&quot; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/fNY29cC1Z4\">pic.twitter.com\/fNY29cC1Z4<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; RNC Research (@RNCResearch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RNCResearch\/status\/1555206648045658116?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 4, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAbortion is a medical decision,\u201d Abrams responded. \u201cIt is what helps a woman who\u2019s had a miscarriage actually navigate that space. It\u2019s technically a spontaneous abortion. It is what happens in an ectopic pregnancy but it is also a decision that women make because they are not ready to be mothers. It is a medical decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abrams confuses many things in this statement. First, an induced abortion is the <em>intentional<\/em> killing of a child in the womb. While medical terminology <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/support-abortion-save-womans-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">does refer<\/a> to a miscarriage (in which the child dies unexpectedly) as a &#8220;spontaneous abortion,&#8221; induced abortion is not a treatment for miscarriage, nor does it help a woman who&#8217;s had a miscarriage. While some treatments for miscarriages (such as a D&amp;C procedure) may also be used for induced abortions, the difference is that treatment for a miscarriage does <em>not<\/em> intentionally kill a child; that child has already died in utero. In an induced abortion, a yet-living child is <em>intentionally killed<\/em> to end the pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, treatment for an ectopic pregnancy <em>is not<\/em>\u00a0considered an induced abortion. Until very recently, Planned Parenthood itself acknowledged as much on its <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-erases-ectopic-pregnancy-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>, which read,\u00a0\u201cTreating an ectopic pregnancy isn\u2019t the same thing as getting an abortion.\u201d It was only after the overturn of <em>Roe v. (Photo by Erika Goldring\/Getty Images)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Al Sharpton: The Bible is &#8216;about choice&#8217; and we &#8216;do not make laws to compel&#8217; people<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The idea that God-given &#8220;free will&#8221; is a justification for supporting abortion was echoed this week by the President of National Action Network and MSNBC\u00a0<em>PoliticsNation\u00a0<\/em>host Al Sharpton. During an interview on Chris Jansing Reports, Sharpton claimed, &#8220;The Bible, if you\u2019re using this [abortion] as a\u00a0religious argument, the Bible is\u00a0about choice.\u00a0You can go to heaven or hell. There\u2019s nowhere in the Bible that\u00a0says you had to go to heaven.\u00a0So, where do we get this theology\u00a0of forcing something when the\u00a0reality is you can\u2019t even\u00a0Biblically base that? It\u2019s a\u00a0question of choice.\u00a0If you are a minister, as I am, you can preach to people to convert them, you\u00a0do not make laws to compel them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sharpton claims that laws shouldn&#8217;t exist to compel people to act in a certain manner\u00a0\u2014 but we have plenty of laws (with which he would no doubt agree) that most definitely compel people to act in a certain manner.\u00a0We have laws against rape, murder, assault, and theft. Laws against abortion are \u2014 like other laws \u2014 meant to protect the lives of human beings. Pro-life laws seek to protect the most innocent and vulnerable among us \u2014 the preborn.<\/p>\n<p>The late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.quakervoicewa.org\/a-quote-from-dr-martin-luther-king-jr-s-address-at-western-michigan-university-december-18-1963\/\">one of his most famous speeches<\/a>, addressed the idea of laws and morality as it related to the civil rights of African Americans in the 1960s:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Now the other myth that gets around is the idea that legislation cannot really solve the problem and that it has no great role to play in this period of social change because you\u2019ve got to change the heart and you can\u2019t change the heart through legislation. You can\u2019t legislate morals. The job must be done through education and religion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Well, there\u2019s half\u2010truth involved here&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>But we must go on to say that while it may be true that morality cannot be legislated, behavior can be regulated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>It may be true that the law cannot change the heart but it can restrain the heartless.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>It may be true that the law cannot make a man love me but it can keep him from lynching me and I think that is pretty important, also.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The fact remains that <em>laws impose a value system by their very nature<\/em>, and laws against murder are in place to protect human life and penalize those who choose to do the opposite. Tragically, society has in recent times has chosen to dehumanize, discriminate against, and kill human beings before birth under the guise of preserving the &#8216;rights&#8217; and &#8216;freedom&#8217; of others\u00a0\u2014 ignoring the inherent right to life of every human being. This right is already acknowledged in the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which <a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/constitution\/amendment-14\/\">states<\/a> that no person should be deprived of &#8220;life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>These are certainly not the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-okay-human-beings-free-will\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only instances<\/a> in which abortion-supporting Christians have claimed that having &#8220;free will&#8221; and &#8220;choice&#8221; means killing preborn human beings is acceptable before God.\u00a0However, there is nothing in Christianity that elevates &#8220;free will&#8221; given by God to state that all decisions are therefore moral. (If this were the case, the very concept of <em>sin<\/em> would not be supported by Scripture.)<\/p>\n<p>In the Old Testament, God stated clearly, &#8220;You shall not murder.&#8221; In the New Testament, Christ also calls his followers to actively evangelize and share their faith with others \u2014\u00a0to &#8220;[g]o into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation&#8221; (Mk 16:15). The gospel, or good news, is that though humankind used our God-given &#8220;free will&#8221; to <em>sin<\/em> against (or disobey) God&#8217;s commands, God made a way for us to be forgiven and to have a restored relationship with Him through Jesus Christ, His Son. Therefore, that gift of free will was <em>never<\/em> intended for us to get to do whatever we want (even if it harms others) and then quietly sit by as we watch others do the same. Free will enables us to have the freedom to follow God and choose the good and the right, and as professing Christ followers, we should encourage others to do the same. Putting laws in place to remove the right to life from certain, weaker human beings is unjust and unbiblical.<\/p>\n<p>If Abrams and Sharpton believe in God as they claim, they must believe that He is the author of all life. Abortion is an intentional act of homicide, which takes the life bestowed by the Creator.
