{"id":273542,"date":"2022-08-06T11:38:55","date_gmt":"2022-08-06T16:38:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=273542"},"modified":"2022-08-12T15:59:08","modified_gmt":"2022-08-12T20:59:08","slug":"campus-group-baby-unplanned-pregnancy-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/campus-group-baby-unplanned-pregnancy-college\/","title":{"rendered":"Campus group says facing an unplanned pregnancy shouldn&#8217;t mean college is over"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty-six percent of all undergraduate students, or 4.8 million students, are raising dependent children.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to that statistic, <\/span>it should be much more common to see pregnant students walking their campus halls and concourses.<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is this not the case? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judgment and stigma leave them feeling isolated and unsupported with no safe place to turn. But Baby Steps at Auburn University has started to change that narrative after opening their doors and becoming that safe place women experiencing unplanned pregnancies in college can find refuge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Baby Steps is not a faith-based organization and not funded by Auburn University, they are changing the culture on Auburn\u2019s campus by empowering students experiencing an unplanned pregnancy to have both their education and their baby. They don\u2019t have to choose one or the other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaitlyn Willing, the Director of Operations at Baby Steps, spoke with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oanow.com\/news\/local\/i-was-not-ready-for-that-blue-line-baby-steps-helps-student-mothers-at-auburn\/article_e46752a2-0a0c-11ed-be6d-f7d7e02e4ffe.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opelika-Auburn News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of [student parents] drop out because they don\u2019t have the resources to stay in school, and so that\u2019s what we provide,\u201d Willing said. \u201cIf they are wanting to finish their degree, an unplanned pregnancy shouldn\u2019t have to stop that. To truly empower a female in today\u2019s world means giving her the option to stay in school and raise the baby and have a little bit of extra help so she can do that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FBabyStepsatAuburnUniversity%2Fposts%2F5288589121205417&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"819\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willing said that when she herself faced an unplanned pregnancy as a student at Auburn University, she found little support from anyone.\u00a0\u201cWhen I told my professor, they actually sent me to the office of disabilities because they didn\u2019t know what to do with me,\u201d she said. \u201cThere was not really a protocol or something in place to help students who had found out that they had an unplanned pregnancy. That experience is what drove me to help create Baby Steps.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby Steps Founder and Executive Director Michelle Schultz had an unplanned pregnancy while she was a student at Auburn, but her story was different than Kaitlyn\u2019s, as it ended in abortion. This decision impacted her life tremendously and ultimately led to Baby Steps opening their doors on Auburn\u2019s campus in 2017. They&#8217;ve currently served 80 Student-Moms so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Student-Mom interviewed, Ashley, described how she was struggling with juggling a long commute, working, and taking classes, while caring for her young son. Baby Steps was able to welcome her into their home, provide her with childcare and many other resources that led her to successfully graduating from Auburn University with a bachelor degree in Agricultural Science. \u201cThey took out a lot of the things that weighed on me, so that way I could be me again,\u201d Ashley said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to housing and childcare, Baby Steps also provides tangible items like\u00a0baby clothes, bottles, diapers, wipes, and supplies, along with training in\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ocm.auburn.edu\/newsroom\/campus_notices\/2021\/09\/280836-baby-steps-auburn.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">parenting skills<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and educational support. The Student-Moms meet on a weekly basis at the Baby Steps house and enjoy a home-cooked meal donated by the community and savor their time with fellow peers that they can relate to. Baby Steps also offers support to Student-Fathers, called Fathers on Campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why isn\u2019t there support like this for college students facing unplanned pregnancies across the country? Well\u2026 Baby Steps is working on that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are currently fundraising to start chapters on other university campuses, starting with the University of Central Florida.
