When over 400 people signed a petition demanding Collier&#8217;s invitation be rescinded, the University of Michigan refused, saying her speech was about medicine, not politics. In retaliation, roughly half of the students walked out.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Openly has the views of&#8230;roughly half the population. Hopefully the Michigan School of Medicine educates these young people such that they grow to hear views with which they disagree and to be open to challenges to their biases. P.S. Wade<\/em>, or any other political topic. She offered encouragement for the incoming students, and gave them advice on what to expect. Her one semi-political statement was to call for unity and healing, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/university-of-michigan-medical-students-walk-out-on-pro-life-speaker-at-initiation-ceremony\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Review<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I want to acknowledge the deep wounds our community has suffered over the past several weeks,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have a great deal of work to do for healing to occur,\u201d she continued. \u201cAnd I hope that for today, for this time, we can focus on what matters most: coming together to support our newly accepted students and their families with the goal of welcoming them into one of the greatest vocations that exist on this earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>7\/23\/22:<\/strong> For medical students, the White Coat Ceremony is a prestigious occasion. It is when a future doctor beginning medical school has a white lab coat placed on them by the university&#8217;s faculty, signifying the responsibility of their role as a physician. The University of Michigan will have its White Coat Ceremony on July 24th, with Dr. Kristin Collier serving as keynote speaker. But Collier&#8217;s presence caused a revolt, simply due to her pro-life beliefs. Thankfully,\u00a0the university did not cave to pro-abortion pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Collier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uofmhealth.org\/profile\/710\/kristin-marguerite-collier-md#expertise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">graduated<\/a> from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed her residency at the University of Michigan Health System, where she was chosen as chief resident. She is board certified in internal medicine and serves as an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Michigan, co-directing the program on health, spirituality, and religion. She is also the associate program director of the internal medicine residency. Her resume seems to indicate that she would be an excellent choice for keynote speaker \u2014 but because she is pro-life, incoming medical students, graduate students, alumni, and other Michigan Medicine physicians signed a petition to have her invitation to speak rescinded.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLScEPMDHNW_gKQktNzV3kEkg3Tz9hmNSh6zz_n_GHTdX0sjrLg\/viewform\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petition<\/a>, which has been signed by over 400 people, complained that Collier has expressed her pro-life view on social media and has also given interviews about her pro-life beliefs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Liberation that costs innocent lives is just oppression that is redistributed.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Kristin Collier (@KristinCollie20) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KristinCollie20\/status\/1521866146009526273?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 4, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Because of this, the students said Collier subverts the values of the University of Michigan, as well as the medical profession as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we support the rights of freedom of speech and religion, an anti-choice speaker as a representative of the University of Michigan undermines the University\u2019s position on abortion and supports the non-universal, theology-rooted platform to restrict abortion access, an essential part of medical care,\u201d the petition reads. \u201cThis is not simply a disagreement on personal opinion; through our demand we are standing up in solidarity against groups who are trying to take away human rights and restrict medical care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several incoming medical students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigandaily.com\/news\/academics\/340-umich-medical-students-sign-petition-opposing-selection-of-anti-abortion-speaker-at-upcoming-white-coat-ceremony\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spoke to the Michigan Daily<\/a> about Collier&#8217;s role as keynote speaker, and why they oppose her very presence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\"><em>You\u2019ve got these incoming (medical students) who voted and organized and demonstrated very clearly that they don\u2019t want Dr. Collier speaking there. They don\u2019t want this representative of the medical school welcoming them into a medical profession that is supposed to be respecting patient autonomy.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 25px;\"><em>More than half of matriculants to (medical) school now are assigned female at birth. These are people who are directly affected by her being given a platform. &#8230; (Our class is) almost entirely strangers to one another, and yet, we have collectively banded together. More than half of us responded to a survey from someone that we don\u2019t even know to say, &#8220;This is a human rights issue and we have a voice in this.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/50-million-millennial-genz-dead-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>More than 50 million Millennial and Gen Z babies are dead because of abortion<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yet the university seems unwilling to back down, and is standing behind Collier. Michigan Medicine spokeswoman Mary Masson told the Michigan Daily that Collier was selected by the Gold Humanism Honor Society due to her medical qualifications, and the invitation would not be rescinded simply because Collier is pro-life. \u201cThe University of Michigan does not revoke an invitation to a speaker based on their personal beliefs,\u201d Masson said. \u201cHowever, the White Coat Ceremony will not be used as a forum to air personal political or religious beliefs; it will focus on welcoming students into the profession of medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s refreshing to see the university stand behind Collier\u00a0\u2014 after all, it is abortion itself which deprives human beings of their most intrinsic right: the right to life.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATE, 7\/25\/22: Medical students walked out of the University of Michigan Medical School&#8217;s White Coat Ceremony, protesting Dr. Kristin Collier&#8217;s appointment as keynote speaker.
