Michigan saw a 25-year high in the number of abortions committed in the state in 2021, according to data from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).<\/p>\n

Last year, 30,074 abortions were committed, a 1.4% increase from 29,669 in 2020. It’s still a large decrease from the highest number of abortions ever committed \u2014 49,098 in 1987 \u2014 but it is also the highest number of abortions committed since then. Virtually all of the abortions were committed on Michigan residents, and most of the women were not married; slightly over half had undergone at least one previous abortion. Slightly more than half of the women also had given birth to at least one child. There were also 87 “failed” abortions, which the Michigan HHS defined as “an abortion attempt that results in an ongoing pregnancy after an attempt at either surgical or medical abortion.”<\/p>\n

According to Bridge Michigan<\/a>, abortions are rising faster in Michigan than throughout the rest of the country.<\/p>\n

“In 2019, Michigan\u2019s abortion rate \u2014 14.6 abortions per 1,000 women ages 15-44 \u2014 was the fifth highest in the United States. A decade earlier, in 2009, Michigan\u2019s rate was the 26th highest in the nation,” the outlet reported. “Michigan\u2019s abortions began increasing in 2009 after steadily declining since 1982. There were nearly 30,000 abortions in Michigan in 2020, a 33 percent increase since 2009, when there were 23,357.”<\/p>\n

Gretchen Whitmer, the current governor of Michigan, took office in 2019, and under her leadership, abortion is only likely to increase further. She has been campaigning for abortion consistently in recent months, including signing an executive order<\/a> to protect abortionists, ordering state agencies to ignore investigations<\/a> from other states, and even referred to abortion as “life-sustaining<\/a>.”<\/p>\n

But perhaps most egregiously, Whitmer has twice vetoed funding<\/a> for life-affirming alternatives to abortion. This funding in the state budget\u00a0would have promoted adoption and given funding to pregnancy resource centers, but Whitmer claimed that it \u201cwould have used state funding to pursue an anti-abortion political agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bobby Leddy, a spokesman for Whitmer, further added, \u201cThe vetoes in SB 82 and HB 4400 relate to funding that would be targeted to programs or organizations that purportedly focus on maternal health, but in reality do not fully support reproductive health and choice.”<\/p>\n

Yet it seems that the only choice Whitmer, and other abortion activists like her, want women to turn to is abortion.<\/p>\n
