{"id":272836,"date":"2022-07-20T08:52:27","date_gmt":"2022-07-20T13:52:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=272836"},"modified":"2023-11-06T21:47:41","modified_gmt":"2023-11-07T03:47:41","slug":"uk-abortion-pills-7-months-pregnant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-abortion-pills-7-months-pregnant\/","title":{"rendered":"UK\u2019s largest abortion provider sent abortion pills to woman who was 7 months pregnant"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/uks-largest-abortion-provider-sent-abortion-pills-to-woman-7-months-pregnant\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) An abortion provider who sent abortion pills to a woman who was seven months pregnant is now attempting to use the case to make abortion legal up to birth.<\/p>\n<p>One of Britain\u2019s largest abortion providers, the British Pregnancy Advisory Service, provided abortion pills for a woman who subsequently gave birth to a baby at seven months gestation. It is unclear whether the baby was born alive.<\/p>\n<p>After taking the pills, the woman went on to deliver her seven-month-old baby and was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11021961\/Two-British-women-face-life-prison-having-abortions-obscure-160-year-Victorian-law.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> to the police. Following the initial hearing, the case is set to be sent to Stoke Crown Court.<\/p>\n<p>In accordance with the law, \u2018DIY\u2019 home abortions, which take place entirely outside of a clinical context, must take place before the tenth week of pregnancy. However, due to the fact that there is no in-person consultation, there is no mechanism to accurately verify the gestation of the baby.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear in this case whether the woman who took the abortion pills knew she was past the ten-week limit for a \u2018DIY\u2019 abortion, or whether she was mistaken about how far along she was in her pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>BPAS is attempting to use this case to advocate for the removal of sections 58 and 59 of the Offences Against the Persons Act (OAPA) and the Infant Life Preservation Act.<\/p>\n<p>As the Abortion Act was passed to create exemptions to sections 58 and 59 of the OAPA and Infant Life Preservation Act, a repeal of sections 58 and 59 of the OAPA would make the majority of the Abortion Act (1967) redundant, repealing the current 24-week limit that most abortions are performed under, allowing abortion to take place on demand, for any reason, up to birth.<\/p>\n<p>This position has been affirmed by their former CEO, Ann Furedi, who at the launch of the We Trust Women campaign to \u2018decriminalise\u2019 abortion stated, \u201cI want to be very, very clear and blunt\u2026 there should be no legal upper limit\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-sepsis-death-woman\/\">Abortion pill confirmed to have led to sepsis and death for UK woman<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhy did you send pills to kill a viable baby above the legal limit?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the case, Dr Calum Miller, NHS doctor and research associate at the University of Oxford specialising in abortion policy, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrCalumMiller\/status\/1549358499628466176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> BPAS of \u201cprofoundly dangerous\u201d behaviour and said they \u201cshould be prosecuted\u201d for sending abortion pills to a woman who was seven months pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>In the exchange on Twitter, he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrCalumMiller\/status\/1549358499628466176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>: \u201cthe woman and the baby are victims, and BPAS the culprits\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to ask BPAS whether they thought their action was dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy did you send pills to kill a viable baby above the legal limit? Why did you make a woman deliver him\/her at home with no medical supervision? Doesn\u2019t this sound dangerous to you?\u201d Dr Miller said.<\/p>\n<p>BPAS did not answer his question.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2018DIY\u2019 abortion in the UK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018DIY\u2019 abortion, sometimes called telemedical abortion, was made legal in the UK in March 2020 on a temporary basis as part of the Government\u2019s pandemic response, following a large lobbying campaign that was run by BPAS. In March of this year, Parliament voted to make this scheme permanent, despite the Government\u2019s insistence that it \u201cwas always intended to be a temporary measure\u201d as part of other supposedly emergency legislation.<\/p>\n<p>Between April 2020 and September 2021, more than <a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/over-10000-women-needed-hospital-treatment-after-using-abortion-pills\">10,000 women<\/a> had to receive hospital treatment following the use of medical abortion pills in England.<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson Catherine Robinson said: \u201cDr Miller is absolutely right to call out BPAS for their dangerous and negligent behaviour. BPAS are clearly criminally negligent in failing to ensure that their client was acting within the law.
