{"id":272800,"date":"2022-07-22T08:46:00","date_gmt":"2022-07-22T13:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=272800"},"modified":"2022-07-20T19:25:46","modified_gmt":"2022-07-21T00:25:46","slug":"washington-post-author-adoption-parenting-hard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/washington-post-author-adoption-parenting-hard\/","title":{"rendered":"WaPo author implies that abortion is needed because adoption and parenting are hard"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This week, the Washington Post published an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2022\/07\/18\/adoption-abortion-roe-dobbs\/?fbclid=IwAR1p3sM1-V8HO5_iXV2od0T7tslupoc3h7-x9qry3D3GvWlpChGzmI2TwGg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> entitled, \u201cWomen denied abortion rarely choose adoption. That\u2019s unlikely to change.\u201d Surprisingly, it gets many things right, but the implications of some of what is stated in the piece are dead wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the author, Sydney Trent, admits that the adoption peak in this country was before the\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0decision, Trent is pessimistic about there being a boom in adoptions post-<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She cites many reasons for this, some of which are valid. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[P]lacing a child for adoption is an extremely difficult emotional step for most women,\u201d Trent notes. This is unquestioningly true. \u201cAdoption involves loss by definition,\u201d Trent also correctly states. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, these things have <em>always<\/em> been true of adoption\u00a0\u2014\u00a0even prior to <em>Roe<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of these factors, Trent concludes that many more people will choose to parent children they did not intend to have, and that many of these will be children \u201cof poor African American and Latino women\u2026 who will be overwhelmed by the cost and stresses of raising more kids.\u201d Trent then suggests that there will consequently be an increase in the number of children in foster care, especially among these demographics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But poverty is not a key reason why children end up in foster care (which is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/adoption-foster-care-not-same-differences\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">very different<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from placing a child for adoption). Neglect, drug use, and abuse are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.afamilyforeverychild.org\/nationalfostercaremonth-why-children-end-up-in-foster-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2019\/07\/15\/741790195\/more-kids-are-getting-placed-in-foster-care-because-of-parents-drug-use\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reasons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> children are removed from the home and placed in foster care. Unless Trent is conflating poverty and\/or Black and Latino ethnicity with these other problems, there is no reason to conclude more kids will end up in foster care just because more women in these demographics will be choosing to parent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/conversation-mrs-universe-foster-care\/\">A conversation with Mrs. Universe on foster care misconceptions and how pro-lifers can help<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Trent also overlooks the most important thing: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these children will be alive, with a chance at life<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if they face the biggest life <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dear-simone-open-letter-chance-live-circumstances\/\">challenges<\/a>, children are not better off dead.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, one crucial part of the solution is something Trent presents as a problem: \u201cPoor women who plan to parent their infants will need much greater access to child care, affordable housing, job training, and other services and necessities to improve their standards of living.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of this is absolutely correct \u2014\u00a0and we should work to meet these needs rather than suggesting death as a \u201csolution.\u201d We should also work to encourage <em>men<\/em> to stay and support the children they help to create.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, we should work to address the needs of birth mothers who are considering adoption. Trent touches on this, emphasizing the need for grief counseling and the possibilities for ongoing contact offered by open adoption.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn order to \u2018fix\u2019 the issue of increasing the likelihood of adoption decisions we have to change how we serve women who would consider adoption from the top down,\u201d according to Brittany Paladino, a birth mother and the PR Director for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abidingloveadopt.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abiding Love Adoptions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an organization that assists birth mothers before, during, and after the adoption process. Paladino emphasized to Live Action News the need for offering comprehensive resources and services to birth mothers from the beginning of the adoption process through the post-placement period. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only in this way will adoption become a more positive option for birth parents, and truly honor the birth parents who choose it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased support \u2013 both for low-income women who choose to parent and for birth parents who choose adoption \u2013 is the solution to the so-called \u201cproblem\u201d of less accessible abortion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/liveactionnewsonline\/\">\u201cLike\u201d Live Action News on Facebook<\/a> for more pro-life news and commentary!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This week, the Washington Post published an article entitled, \u201cWomen denied abortion rarely choose adoption.
