Although few Americans support legalized abortion in the third trimester, the number seems to be increasing. A 2022 poll<\/a> found 20% of respondents in support \u2013 up from only 13% in 2018.\u00a0<\/span>One possible reason for this increased support is the spread of pro-abortion misinformation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Misconceptions about third-trimester abortion<\/b><\/p>\n

For example, the <\/span>Washington Post<\/span> recently quoted<\/a> Jen Villavicencio of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists saying, \u201cWhen abortions occur in the third trimester, most often something has gone terribly wrong in the pregnant person\u2019s life or pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cTerribly wrong\u201d is vague \u2013 an opinion that could mean different things to different readers. The implication, though, is that these are desperate, extreme situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

New study reveals the true reasons third-trimester abortions are done<\/b><\/p>\n

A new study contradicts this narrative.<\/span><\/p>\n

The pro-abortion group ANSIRH, which describes itself<\/a> as<\/span>\u00a0\u201cProviding the evidence you need to advance reproductive well-being,\u201d says the study concluded that:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The reasons people need third-trimester abortions are not so different from why people need abortions before the third trimester\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

[T]he circumstances that lead to someone needing a third-trimester abortion have overlaps with the pathways to abortion at other gestations.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

The study itself<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>doesn\u2019t give a detailed breakdown of women\u2019s reasons or any concrete numbers. Instead, it claims that people have abortions in the third trimester for one or more of the following reasons (which it divides into two categories):\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
