On July 11, World Population Day, the United Nations (UN) issued its latest World Population Prospects <\/span>report<\/span><\/a>, predicting a global population peak at 10.4 billion in the 2080s, which is slightly lower than its <\/span>previous<\/span><\/a> estimates. In response, the <\/span>pro-abortion<\/span><\/a>, UK-based group <\/span>Population Matters<\/span><\/a> sent out a press release full of alarming rhetoric from activists across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n

Robin Maynard<\/span><\/a>, director of Population Matters, dismissed the very real <\/span>concerns<\/span><\/a> about declining fertility rates in dozens of nations, <\/span>stating<\/span><\/a>:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In high-income countries like the UK there will be grave mutterings of \u2018sub-replacement\u2019 fertility, ageing populations, dependency ratios, and \u2018pension crises.\u2019 These are genuine but exaggerated, \u2018first world,\u2019 challenges that are predictable and can be adjusted for.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Notably, Maynard does not name any means by which these \u201cfirst-world challenges\u201d \u2014 which experts <\/span>warn<\/span><\/a> can cause stagnating incomes, inflation, labor shortages, and a decline in prosperity, culture, and innovation \u2014 can be \u201cadjusted for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, the press release from Maynard’s organization focuses on third-world population growth \u2013 particularly in Africa and Asia \u2013 and its supposed link to the alleged climate crisis, quoting abortion, contraception, and climate activists.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Suchitra Dalvie with the <\/span>Asia Safe Abortion Partnership<\/span><\/a> claimed<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0\u201cWe are looking at a future of water shortages [and] climate change[.]\u201d Her solution? \u201cWe need to \u2026 protect individual sexual and reproductive rights.\u201d This is, of course, doublespeak for protecting abortion. Asia is home to numerous countries with below-replacement-level birth rates.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bernarda Jiminez of <\/span>WINGS Guatemala<\/span><\/a>, an organization that provides free contraception and sterilizations to people in that country (and whose <\/span>board<\/span><\/a> of directors is composed almost entirely of white people, at least two of whom have served on boards of directors for Planned Parenthood affiliates), said <\/span>this<\/span><\/a>: \u201cIf there are fewer people, that gives the Earth a chance to regenerate. In the [Mayan] cosmovision, there is an integral respect for Mother Earth.\u201d Ancient Mayans also practiced <\/span>child sacrifice<\/span><\/a> to appease their gods.<\/span><\/p>\n

Poonam Muttreja, an Indian activist quoted in the release, <\/span>notes<\/span><\/a> that this region is not affected by rapid population growth. \u201c[T]here is no population explosion here,\u201d says Muttreja. However, Muttreja goes on to emphasize the alleged need for abortion and contraception in that nation. Muttreja states: \u201c[O]ur approach should be that of protecting the reproductive rights of women \u2026 Our focus should be on providing women of all communities access to family planning services[.]\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The agenda is clear: Population alarmists appear to desire a world with fewer non-white people, all in the name of protecting the environment \u2013 even though, as noted by other environmentalist <\/span>groups<\/span><\/a>, this is equivalent to victim-blaming, since these demographics tend to use fewer<\/em> resources than those in the West. <\/span>And Population Matters is even willing to promote groups who wish to sterilize and abort non-white people in order to achieve this goal.<\/span><\/p>\n
