According to the <\/span>Washing<\/span>ton<\/span> Post<\/span><\/a>, medical schools in states that have chosen to restrict abortion are considering \u201ccontingency plans\u201d in order to continue training obstetrics and gynecology students to commit abortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), which sets standards for residency and fellowship programs, has historically required such training to be provided by medical schools in order for them to achieve accreditation. In the wake of the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn <\/span>Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i>, the Council has <\/span>proposed<\/span><\/a> to maintain this requirement, with slight modifications: programs in states that restrict abortions would be required to \u201cprovide access to [abortion training] in a jurisdiction where no such legal restriction is present[.]\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This would mandate that obstetrics and gynecology students travel to pro-abortion states for training. In situations wherein students are not able to travel, programs would be required to provide \u201cdidactic activities, including simulation[.]\u201d Programs that don\u2019t meet these requirements risk citation for noncompliance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Those with conscience objections would still be allowed to opt-out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Christina Francis of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG) <\/span>called<\/span><\/a> the ACGME\u2019s position \u201cextreme\u201d, telling the Washington Post, \u201cTheir call for \u2018workarounds,\u2019 I would say, is suspect. And it needs to be looked at very closely.\u201d She stated that clinical experience in committing abortions is unnecessary for OB\/GYN competency, and predicted that residents and legislators in pro-life states will object to efforts to fund abortion training in pro-abortion states.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Jennifer Kerns, an associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) said, \u201cWe\u2019ve always hosted visiting trainees from other sites.\u201d She added that she and her colleagues in medical academia are \u201ccommitted\u201d to abortion training. \u201cWe will just totally double down on it and try to accommodate trainees from other programs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The proposed changes will be voted on in September.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
