Judge Christine Weems ruled in favor of the abortion industry, who have been suing to stop trigger laws from taking effect.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a relief that this Texas state court acted so quickly to block this deeply harmful abortion ban,\u201d Marc Hearron, senior counsel at the Center for Reproductive Rights, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2022\/06\/28\/texas-abortion-resume\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a press release. \u201cThis decision will allow abortion services to resume at many clinics across the state, connecting Texans to the essential health care they need. Every hour that abortion is accessible in Texas is a victory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Amy Hagstrom Miller, president and CEO of Whole Woman&#8217;s Health, said they are reopening their facilities and beginning to schedule abortions again.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Ken Paxton said he is immediately appealing the ruling, calling the decision wrong in the wake of the <em>Dobbs<\/em> decision.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today a Harris County judge froze pre-Roe laws criminalizing abortion in TX. I\u2019ll ensure we have all the legal tools to keep TX pro-life!<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Attorney General Ken Paxton (@KenPaxtonTX) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KenPaxtonTX\/status\/1541877550653313024?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 28, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>A hearing on the issue is scheduled for July 12.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6\/27\/2022:<\/strong>On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/supreme-court-overturns-roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overturned<\/a> <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Planned Parenthood v. Casey<\/em> in the <em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization<\/em> decision, causing &#8220;trigger laws&#8221; in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/vulnerable-human-beings-protected-trigger-laws-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">13 states<\/a> across the country to go into effect. Though the laws take effect at varying times, the trigger law in Louisiana took effect immediately.<\/p>\n<p>However, a judge has suddenly put the law on hold.<\/p>\n<p>Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge Robin Giarrusso <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/abortion-clinic-challenges-louisiana-trigger-ban-after-us-supreme-court-ruling-2022-06-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued<\/a> a restraining order temporarily blocking Louisiana&#8217;s trigger law from going into effect, meaning abortions can still be committed in the state. Hope Medical Group for Women, one of three Louisiana abortion facilities, sued, along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReproRights\/status\/1541443969464389634\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Center for Reproductive Rights<\/a>. A hearing on July 8 will further revisit the issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/female-senator-louisiana-pro-life\/\">Every current female senator in Louisiana is pro-life: \u2018We\u2019re supporting women and babies\u2019<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit argued that the state&#8217;s law was too &#8220;vague,&#8221; and abortion facilities could not tell if or when it was going into effect, or what the enforceability would be. &#8220;A public health emergency is about to engulf the nation. As expected, Louisiana and many other states wasted no time enacting bans and eliminating abortion entirely,&#8221; Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/06\/27\/abortion-louisiana-trigger-law-lawsuit-roe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;People who need an abortion right now are in a state of panic. We will be fighting to restore access in Louisiana and other states for as long as we can. Every day that a clinic is open and providing abortion services can make a difference in a person\u2019s life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After <em>Roe<\/em> was overturned, Attorney General Jeff Landry vowed to defend the law in court if it was necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs noted in both my legal brief to the Supreme Court and the majority\u2019s opinion: the Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision,\u201d he said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/webview\/politics\/live-news\/roe-wade-abortion-supreme-court-ruling\/h_f265f0d625ea12c722128486226150b1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. \u201cBecause of the Court\u2019s ruling in this case about a Mississippi law limiting abortions after 15 weeks of gestation with exceptions for health emergencies and fetal abnormalities, Louisiana\u2019s trigger law banning abortion is now in effect.
