{"id":271035,"date":"2022-06-29T12:44:44","date_gmt":"2022-06-29T17:44:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=271035"},"modified":"2022-06-28T15:33:15","modified_gmt":"2022-06-28T20:33:15","slug":"because-of-beckett-down-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/because-of-beckett-down-syndrome\/","title":{"rendered":"Because of Beckett: A world made better by one little boy with Down syndrome"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The brief earthly life of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/features\/beckett-s-witness-how-a-sweet-short-life-changed-lives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one beautiful little boy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in North Carolina will have an outsized impact on generations to come. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.legacy.com\/us\/obituaries\/charlotte\/name\/beckett-weinert-obituary?id=9318983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beckett Martin Weinert\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> birth via emergency C-section on October 26, 2019, concluded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stephanieweinert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mom Stephanie\u2019s<\/a> eighth pregnancy and marked her fifth live birth. Though Stephanie had multiple ultrasounds during her pregnancy for various reasons, none suggested any medical issues with her baby until a 38-week ultrasound showed no amniotic fluid and led to his emergent birth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the day she and Beckett expected to go home from the hospital, the pediatrician came in to do one last routine assessment on Beckett, and shocked Stephanie and her husband Peter with surprising news: their baby had some type of heart problem, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he had several markers for Down syndrome. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of heading home, Stephanie and Beckett stayed so that Beckett could undergo a battery of tests.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_271328\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-271328\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-271328\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Weinert-family-2020-700x379.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Weinert-family-2020-700x379.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Weinert-family-2020-300x163.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Weinert-family-2020-768x416.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Weinert-family-2020-500x271.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Weinert-family-2020.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-271328\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Weinert family in 2020 (Photo courtesy of Stephanie Weinert)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Weinerts would learn over the following weeks and months just how serious Beckett\u2019s medical problems were. Their long-awaited, smiling son didn\u2019t just have the significant heart issues that are typical of babies with Down syndrome. He also had advanced lung disease, meaning that his little body struggled mightily to tolerate the surgeries he needed to fix his heart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while Beckett had a somewhat medically calm first year of life, by his first birthday he required full-time oxygen through his nose along with other round-the-clock care. His progressively worsening lung disease led to a prolonged hospital stay at 18 months old in April of 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout young Beckett&#8217;s life, the Weinerts had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UGszuSK1tMU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">purposefully shared<\/a> \u201cthe raw and the real\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lX9fovPqvZk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joys and challenges<\/a> of their everyday journey with him on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/stephanieweinert\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram<\/span><\/a>. In the same way,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0they also intentionally chose to allow the world into their time of deepest suffering as his health rapidly declined over the following weeks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On May 11, 2021, Beckett\u2019s little heart beat for the last time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s okay to acknowledge our fears around special needs parenting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the year since Beckett\u2019s death, the Weinert family has been consoled by countless stories of the ways their son\u2019s life changed other lives. Stephanie spoke to Live Action News about Beckett\u2019s impact and how to show support for families with special needs. She also noted her response when people say \u201cI could never be as brave as you\u201d or \u201cI could never do what you did.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephanie said, \u201cWe all know that our percentage of having a child with special needs goes up as our age goes up, but I don\u2019t think we talk about in public like we should the fears that we have about that happening\u2026 we\u2019re ashamed to have those back-of-the-mind thoughts \u2014 \u2018please, just let me get through that 20-week-ultrasound.\u2019 I can\u2019t tell you how many times I\u2019ve thought \u2018as long as he\u2019s healthy, that\u2019s all that matters.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/separated-adoption-reunited\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Separated by adoption, these sisters were reunited after 55 long years<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She acknowledged, \u201cYes, it\u2019s so hard to parent special needs and to welcome special needs into a family that you already have. Everyone just learns and grows and suffers. And that\u2019s a very real thing. But what we\u2019re also able to show is the joy, the goodness, the beauty. And that\u2019s something the world just doesn\u2019t prepare you for or tell you about, when you\u2019re hearing all the medical things that could go wrong with your child, or about what could happen if you get pregnant at 38 or 42.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lX9fovPqvZk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beckett&#8217;s witness leads to babies born and openness to adoption<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephanie continued, \u201cWe\u2019ve had a lot of couples write us letters and say \u2018we got married at 38\u2019 or \u2018We got married in our early 40s, and we thought we were not going to try to have any children because we knew our chances of having Down syndrome or another disability or illness were so high. But we have reconsidered this for our family because of Beckett.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, she noted, \u201cthere have been many families who have felt called to adopt a baby with Down syndrome after getting to know Beckett. That is one of the most moving things for me, especially after losing him, to receive these notes\u2026 from couples who are open to adoption but would not have considered Down syndrome before knowing Beckett. He showed the good side and led a lot of couples to say, \u2018we could do that. The Lord could come into our story, too.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephanie also spoke directly to the couples that fear they are \u201c\u2018not strong enough for [caring for a baby with special needs],&#8221; but instead believe &#8220;God made certain [other] couples strong enough for that.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While she understands where that fear comes from, and indeed felt it many times herself, Stephanie clarified unequivocally, \u201cthat is a lie from the evil one.\u201d Thanks to Beckett, she and her family have found instead \u201cthat God equips us with the grace for whatever circumstances and situations and crosses that we need to carry. And the grace never comes beforehand. It comes after you step out, you take that first step, and you\u2019re already along the journey.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UGszuSK1tMU\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to support families raising a child with special needs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stephanie observed that \u201cbecause of the tragedy of abortion, most of the sweet little souls with special needs are not here. That is a reality in our world, and that is a loss to us, that we don\u2019t have these daily encounters with these beautiful souls. It\u2019s not an everyday occurrence to go to the grocery store or the playground and have many special needs children there to see and to come up randomly and hug you.\u201d Because \u201cin some ways, they are a mystery to us, a lot of us are afraid. We\u2019re afraid to go up to the special needs mom and say \u2018how are you doing? How can I pray for you? You\u2019re doing a great job.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than worrying about what to say, oftentimes the most helpful thing people can offer is a listening ear. \u201cMaybe that mom just needs a safe place to vent, a safe place to tell you how it\u2019s really going. Maybe your job is to listen.
